I have been a pipe smoker for many years. I average about 4 bowls a day, sometimes 5. My baccies are mostly light or medium in strength. In the past, when I wanted to quit, I used Copenhagen and it worked great, but it gives me nasty indigestion and I get really addicted. I also have a real weak stomach, so don’t want to mess with that stuff anymore. I have read that lots of you quit smoking using snuff. I have been using snuff for about two months now, and while I quite enjoy it, I do not get that mythological “lift” or “rush” one hears about and neither does it satisfy my nicotine craving very effectively. This means I’m still smoking nearly, but not quite as much because I get what I ‘need’ from the pipe but not from snuff. I’ve got a number of WoS’s flavours as well as Gawith Kendall Brown and McChrystal’s Apricot and while I read on snuffreviews that most of these are considered medium in the nicotine dept. they feel wimpoid to me and don’t scratch the N itch. I’ve got some F&T Santo Domingo on order in hopes that that one will cut the mustard. I’ve tried sniffing as well as wet-pinching as well as shoving great huge pinches up there with my thumb, but still no joy. Any other ideas, opinions, advice or comments? Thanks.
try snus
Trouble with that idea is as I said, been there done that, and don’t want to do it again. The words about Cope? First paragraph? It’s the nasal snuff I want to do, I like it, it’s relatively safe, just need to find a way to get a “hit” from it.
I’m fairly new to snuff myself, but I had a similar experience with some of the ones I started with. Until I found the American Scotches. Every single one I have tried so far, an it’s been a few, had a lot more kick to it than any of their British counterparts.
Cheers Mate, great advice just in time for PACT. LOL.
Go for the Rooster, WE Garrett or Square if you like smoky flavors. Otherwise, Navy Plain and RR Mills are as plain as they come. I’m not really into the sweet ones, but they are supposed to have around the same nicotine level. You can get the 4.65 oz tins at nicotinerush for 14 or 15 bucks.
I agree with Red on snus, that’s what got me to quit cigs. It doesn’t have all the additives as Copenhagen, and due to the pasteurization process, it doesn’t mess with the stomach as bad. Now, if oral tobacco just isn’t your cup of tea, that’s cool, I wasn’t a fan either but snus was far different then my experiences with dip and chew. I’m in the same boat with getting vitamin N from snuff, I haven’t gotten much from it myself. I have recently tried Dholakia black and white and for the first time, I actually got a nic hit from them. Also NTSU ought to give you a hefty hit as well. I’m becoming very fond of all four of those, but they don’t have the same satisfaction from a sensory standpoint as the Toque snuffs I’ve had. I’ve also found that Dholakia white is a real challenge to take, but by mixing it with some of the Toque’s I get the flavor fun as well as the nic hit, so that makes it a win/win situation for me. Hope this helps! Pat
Snus and snuff combo is the best way to get off smokes. And if snus isn’t an option, high nic snuffs are the way to go: all Americans, Taxi Red, NTSU, toasts, McChrystal’s O&G and others. Year ago I smoked up to 50 fags a day, now manage nicely with snuff only, I’m off snus for a while due gum infection.
Snus and dip are very different. Snus wil not give the heartburn like dip (Cope) will. I would not have quit smoking without it. I can get by on snuff alone on a given day, but I have to remind myself to take a pinch about every five minutes. Frequent pinches really keeps the cravings away, and can generate a nice bizz if you keep it up. A nose stuffed with Ntsu or Taxi is always helpful too.
I smoked for 16 years and quit cold with just snuff. The first few days you just need to snuff as much as you have to (which may be quite a lot:) when the cravings come up. I would suggest lots of variety to chose from as well as something that you really enjoy. Just the act of snuffing winds up being a replacement for the act of smoking in some ways. I was never a huge cigar/pipe smoker, just coffin nails. Just talking about smoking makes we want to light up …where’s my snuff at!
Thank you all very much. I see I owe Red an apology for getting a bit testy over the snus thing. In my neck of the woods (British Columbia Interior) snus means Copenhagen. I didn’t know that there was a difference, don’t even know if the real snus is available hereabouts. In any case, you’ve given me some great insights and I have learned a lot. Looks like I shall have to expand my horizons quite a bit, and do some ordering. Cheers.
ain’t no thing will… understandable, i live south of the mason dixon line, so everyone including my wife calls me using swedish snus “dipping” when it actually couldn’t be more different. try it, most snus’ers find it supplants cigarettes without even trying after as little as a few weeks. i shop at northerner (www.northerner.com)
I find that when I snus I simply dont want to smoke. I guess because it keeps you jacked up on nicotine at a consistent level.
again…you draw me into opening a thread that has nothing to do with the song. @ Wildwilliam take a couple of huge hits of dholakia white and call me in the morning…or when/if you regain conscienceness.
Taxi, NTSU, any of the American Scotches, and Dholakia Black or White(both of which mix very well with other flavors). I used snuff alone to quit smoking after a 20 year Camel Filter habit.
My plan is to give up snus when my PACT stash is gone and only use snuff. @ nOOb- about how many grams do you go through a day?
You might try the American snuffs as already mentioned. I hear that the American snuffs have a nicotine kick to them, more so than the other brands. My local smoke shop warned me that the American snuffs are quite strong and not recommended for beginner snuffers like me. I’m new to using snuff, so haven’t tried all that’s out there yet. My preference is for the German snuffs like that of Bernards, and Pöschl.
@wildwilliam - I’ve found that my body has adjusted to the level of nicotine in snuff. For the first few weeks it didn’t do much but now I feel a little pinch very strongly depending on the snuff.
Nicotine satisfaction from snuff or snus is different from smoking a cigarette/pipe and I believe it’s because cigs/pipe smoke contain so much chemicals which give a hit. One draw from a cigarette/pipe fills your bloodstream with a lot more than nicotine only. Therefor cigarettes/pipe smoking and snuff/snus can’t be compared. But, over a period of time, your body will get used to nicotine only and then the craving for a cigarette/pipe will fade away. At present you are craving a cigarette and not nicotine only. Handling a cigarette and specially your pipe, touching your lips, the taste of smoke in your mouth, inhaling the smoke etc, those are the things you miss when trying to quit smoking. It’s requires a change of mind to stop smoking. You must tell yourself that snuff has now taken the place of cigarettes/pipe and it takes 14 days for your mind to accept that. It’s all in the mind!! I enjoyed smoking my pipes tremendously and really mourned the day when I had to part with them. I even gave some of my best ones to my wife to hide for in case I would want them again. Although they now are all gone to other homes, I still admire a good pipe and must fight the urge to buy one again. I repeat, it’s all in the mind.
WildWilliam - You are almost certainly not taking enough snuff. I take approximately 8.5 grams on a daily basis, gathering as much as I can hold in a single pinch. Before giving up cigars my daily intake was only about two grams, which is probably what you are taking now. You are expecting some Santo Domingo. If it is a 2-oz tin it should only last no more than a week since using a coarse snuff facilitates heavy indulgence. This is why most serious snuff-takers order by the pound; it is cost-effective and lasts longer. As my nicotine tolerance is high I’ve never felt a significant nicotine lift from snuff since 1964. I do, however, feel most uncomfortable if so much as a single hour passes without a pinch. Your title line, by the way, is a perfect candidate for the ‘out of context’ quotes.
