Cannot take snuff

I have always been extremely sensitive to snuff and have always had to be very careful which ones I took. I’m a person who gets hay fever badly in Spring. Now here’s the thing, I have become even more sensitive to snuff to the point of not being able to take it without sneezing uncontrollably. I’ve tried taking it different ways, read up on this problem on this site but nothing helps. Very sad as I love the idea of snuff, no smoke for people to complain about, cheaper than cigars and pipes (that I smoked before). I love the history to it. Yet sadly I will have to always take antihistamines if I am to take it at all and that does not work all the time. I have thought of always having a small bottle of distilled water with me so I can turn each pinch into a paste that I can than smear into the nose. That or I will just have to go back to smoking, very sad indeed.

RIP ausDave’s snuffin’. Good luck.

My condolences ,I feel bad for you. Snus is your next safest choice for smoke free nicotine. I personally need to cut back, I don’t sneeze but I have been taken antihistamines to control itching. I fear it is from too much nicotine since I snuff, snus, chew and pipe all day long. and it has calmed down since I backed down the killer cell formula pills I take for my cancer. Enjoy live anyway you can because any day could be your last. Best of luck to you ausDave

I am so sorry to hear your troubles. Have you tried one of the German schmalzlers. They are so corse and damp I can’t emagine them causing sneezing. Regardless, I would give swedish snus a try before you go back to ciggeretts. There are so many flavors and forms (from los to pouches) that you might find something you like. It would certainly be worth the shot before simply going back to the smokes. This site has a lot of good info on snus. Snuson is another site that you might find helpful Anyway, I wish you the best of luck

Well the antihistamines I’ve taken today plus nasal spray have helped and I have been able to take snuff but I don’t know if I want to take antihistamines every day. I remember when I first tried snuff way back in High School I was the only one amongst my friends who could only take one of the many snuffs we bought. Snifs, as for German Schmalzlers they are one or the worse for me, in fact any snuff that says “essential oils” I cannot take. As for snus, I have tried it a few time (people gave me some) and I don’t really go for it, what with all the spitting and everything. The strange thing is the more I take snuff the less I can tolerate it. Most people say you get used to it but I’ve been told one gets more allergies as one gets older. Anyway I was able to have some today.

Spitting? I rarely spit with snus. With white snus, I have never spit. The General G.3 line has little too no drip.

Fair enough, but let’s noot make this a discussion about Suns.

Allergies affect everyone differently. It seems that snuff, or maybe something in the varieties you have used, is having a sensitising effect. It may also be the combination of snuff and other allergens that are around this time of year. You could try again later in the year if you were so inclined, and maybe you’ll have different results. In the meantime, I’m sorry to hear you’re struggling, and applaud your decision to do what’s right for your body. Good luck with however you choose to move forward from here.

I now have a 24hr bronchial dilator inhaler along with another long acting inhaler that contains steroid and I can now breath better than I ever could over this last year of being ill, only problem being this might mean I have COPD. It’s all still under investigation but I can enjoy some snuff again (although not telling the doctor as he just keeps banning me from using it even though when I stop it makes no difference). He also said blood tests showed I was allergic to grass and birds. I mow the lawn. No problems. Even rescued a Swift of all things the other day. No problems. He also said when banning me from snuff that having previously been an 30 year smoker was nothing to do with my illness. Last appointment he says there are all sorts of factors like smoking for instance. I wrote down all my symptoms which led me to believe I had some kind of asthma but with a constant underlying lung inflammation, excessive mucus, cough, lung crackling etc (which I now know are classic COPD symptoms) and I explained this to him so important to do your own research. In fact I remember writing a long while back that things were irritating my lungs but only because they were already inflamed. In effect I was then describing COPD but didn’t realise as the doctor had me thinking I had some snuff caused mould lung infection or snuff allergy. Now I seem to be on the right meds to treat Asthma/COPD and glad to say they are working very well. In fact I’m really surprised at how well. Was able to stop taking the oral steroid after just 3 days of starting the inhalers. I had been left on the oral steroid for 11 months by the doctors even though it’s not supposed to be taken long term because of bad side effects. Really I could have being doing with the inhalers a year ago but it seems the hospital doctor specialist was blinkered by snuff bias rather than look at the obvious. Fine snuffs are still problematic and I won’t generally use those now just because their dustiness causes me chest irritation same as with house dust but the doctor still says it’s just because it is snuff. I have the anti snuff doctor from hell. It’s just not in his medical repertoire that you can use snuff and have some other reason for your illness. He even gave me a lecture about snus but I’m not banned from that so far. I suppose he’s a follower of the if in doubt just ban everything theory. Medical stuff is complicated though. I read that people having COPD symptoms that have a good response to the inhaler treatment as is my case may not have COPD (I would like that to be the case) but then this puts me back into the situation of what is it that I do have? I am a medical mystery it seems but I just take it that today I have effective meds and feel actually that I have practically no symptoms now which is quite a dramatic change of state. If I have COPD (Bronchitis/Emphysema) which is non-curable and progressively worsens I would not advise returning to smoking as is most likely the cause as it is in the majority of cases. For me I find snus very good (once I gave it a proper try) maybe to good as I take loads and haven’t got around to any sort of moderation. I think my e-cig use may have added to my problem so that’s long discarded. Strange thing happened the other day though. Was visiting a cousin who had a stroke and who smokes constantly and I had a sudden feeling that I could have picked up his cigarette and had a puff but no way. Had to resist (my last smoke was 2 years ago) and it showed me that being around other smokers does have a great influence but normally I rarely encounter smoking so it doesn’t bother me. I actually think it was also down to the inhalers clearing my breathing so much that I could take the smoke in the room when previously before the inhalers I would have had to leave. So the inhalers making me feel better actually partly brought back the smoking craving! I suppose sort of like when some-one has a flu and can’t smoke for a while but goes straight back to smoking upon recovery? Surely wetting snuff would make no difference unless it’s just a dust allergy effect and if so then just use moist coarse snuff. What am I missing here in this picture? I don’t know. If your nose just refuses then it seems like snuff is just not for you. Seems like you need to get your allergies sorted then maybe try again and it will be much improved. Get a steroid inhaler. Bet that would sort it but I do have to take both mine daily and that will be long term. At least I feel good now, can breath well, and enjoy my snuff in between snus.

Thanks everyone you have all been so kind. That’s what I like about snuffhouse, people here like to help. For me there were always days were I could easily take the snuffs I could take, then days I had great difficulty. The more coarse, moist snuffs were always better.

In the supermarket today was telling the cashier helper how the inhalers were helping me a lot. I talk to this guy often when I’m there. Anyhow this is one irritating guy when it comes to snuff and today he said that now I felt better I would be taking that old snuff stuff again. I said if I do then I won’t be telling you to save myself the ear ache. It will be a secret snuff taking society from now on as far as people like him are concerned. I think perhaps my dead mother has taken possession of this guy! and the doctor!

What brands of snuff have you used? Any of the F&T blends? I found that many of the Fribourg & Treyer blends had a tendency to harden into an impenetrable armor plate inside of my nose that airborne irritants could not get through. Just a thought.

OK the snuffs I can most easily take are: Red Taxi, Fribourg & Trayer Santo Domingo, Fribourg & Trayer Princes, Samuel Gawith Black Rappee, Samuel Gawith London Brown and so on. Can’t think of the others off the top of my head.

@ausDave sounds like our tastes are similar with mostly coarse and dark. Check out Viking Dark, Old Mill Acadia, de kralingse Prins Regent, and tons of the sg snuffs are that coarse dark fluffy snuff. Give them ago. Maybe that’ll help. If not, forgive me.

Yes, mostly coarse and dark snuffs. I like Viking Dark, still a bit fine, sometimes I ad a bit of distilled water. The Samuel Gawiths are on my list to try more of.

Sorry wrong thread. I got to excited. but while I’m here my favourite moist relatively coarse is probably Crème de Figue. In fact one of my overall favs. Reaching for Mull of Oa pretty often at the moment though. Have you tried any of the Artisan snuffs. Perhaps they might work better as I don’t think they use preservatives which could be something affecting you? Worth a go plus they are pretty great. Expensive but I don’t use a big volume of snuff so they still go a long way for me. Nice at least to have one or two as a treat.

You’d think the artisan snuff would be better but sadly it is as hit and miss as all the others…

Shame. I sense you do want to enjoy snuff and I’m sure it is very frustrating. I can understand as I certainly didn’t enjoy my enforced months of abstinence although at the same time I did get used to it because I had the snus to investigate and even though I now use snuff again I still use snus also. I like the variety. Best ask your doctor but get ready for the snuff ban. Just flat out tell him you like snuff and don’t wish to smoke or use NRT. Can he/she do anything to help. You should probably alert them to the recent increase in your allergy symptoms in any case and get checked out.

Im kinda with ya on snuff and hay fever. I can only take a few snuffs when my allergy kicks in. find the snuffs that soothes your allergies. I use wos extra menthol when blocked, dholakia herbal when dry and irritated, etc. GL findin a snuff that helps.

I am coming into a period of been able to take some snuffs again. There will always be this up and down thing with snuff for me and the fact that there are many I just cannot take.
