Canadian Tobacco (Nasal Snuff) Laws ... (And Toxic contents :P )

I am curious, I can’t seem to figure this out, even though I live in Canada. I know the regular laws on Tobacco, just not snuff… I’ve been told by someone at a Tobacconist Shop that apparently snuff is illegal in BC, Canada. I find that rather hard to believe… Mind if I ask what everyone else knows…? Thanks a bunch. -Michael

@MikeMoose: Pure bullshit. I have purchased it in Victoria, Vancouver and Kelowna. It is rare and hard to find. Mind if I ask where you live? Edit: I don’t normally curse on this site, but I have heard other lies from tobacconists as well, that, I can only assume, wanted to sell me cigars or something. I find this sort of thing both ignorant and poor customer service, and it angries up my blood somewhat. However, the only snuff I have ever seen for sale are Polsch/Ozona varieties. Thankfully, our friends across the pond and down south are more than happy to help us snuff our way through the winter.

Lol no worries Nelson, I speak in vulgar ways too at times. I live in Abbotsford actually, I went to the Willowbrook Mall and talked to a Tobacconist in there, obviously they had the wrong info lol. I was also wondering about it, because I would figure that since its tobacco, and that its “safer”, it would be easy to find. But maybe thats what makes it not so easy to find lol. Yes exactly, poor customer service indeed. Lie to me no less. I can feel ya, bad form right? :stuck_out_tongue: . Well that sounds pretty good! I have actually ordered some snuff from SnuffStore recently, I am anxiously awaiting it… Have you ever used them before? I’m just wondering about reliability that’s all. If I really like it, (which I am pretty sure I will), I plan to order a nice lot from 'em in the future

I am not too familiar with Abbotsford specifically, but if you keep an eye out in the GVRD, you may get lucky. Hole-in-wall convenience stores sometimes hold treasures — like a dusty old snuff tin! Something to keep in the back of your head. I have ordered from snuffstore, mr. snuff, nicotinerush, and toque, and think highly of all of them. I try to spread the love around and order from everybody. You may be waiting a bit with current events, but when things get back to normal, the shipping is usually quite fast. Happy snuffing.

Wow… I hate my computer… *Retypes his post >_< * So, Vancouver you say… I’ll keep that in mind, and my eyes open when I go down there sometime. It would be pretty awesome to come across an old dusty tin of snuff alright :D. Good good! It’s refreshing to hear that. I was just concerned about reliability that’s all :stuck_out_tongue: . I have ordered 3 tins of F&T : High Dry Toast, Macouba, and Kendal Brown… And a tin of Tom Buck :stuck_out_tongue: . I am just curious about how fast delivery is… I know you said it’ll be a wait, but let’s say I ordered that from SnuffStore, and the order was completed (Posted) on 01/03/2011, and today is 01/09/2011 obviously lol, how long would you say the wait would be? Thanks again for your help. Take care! -Michael EDIT: Oh, and any comments of those 4 tins I mentioned? Would be awesome to hear some if you got 'em

WHERE IN KELOWNA?! ive been to every place and cant find it >.> Also I regularly go to vancouver and surrounding areas and I cant find any there either. Ive heard from lots of people that you can get most kinds in victoria but never anywhere else…

There was a head shop kinda place in K-town that had some pipes and what not with a few kinds of snuff. I think it was 2007 and I was passing through, so I don’t recall the name or even the street. I’m sorry I can’t be more specific or helpful. My best advice is to check ANYWHERE that might have ANYTHING tobacco-related. Sometimes head shops have a tobacco retail license to sell cigars, so it is worth a look. In Vancouver itself, there is store on Granville across from Kripps drugs (If memory serves it is the corner of Granville and Nelson. If I am incorrect, it is a block north or so.) that carried the Polsch/Ozona brands. I bought my very first tin there — a tin of Ozona President. I have not been there is some time, but I believe they probably still carry it. I am sorry I cannot remember more details, but if anything occurs to me, I will post it. As far as Victoria proper, when I pick up the last dusty tap box of Gawith Apricot from a weird little store that openly displays tobacco (hence the “adult store” sign out front), I will have bought out the entire city’s supply — though I hear it may be available at a shop out in Sydney or something like that. I have only ever seen Polsch brands for sale and have heard (third hand, mind you) that it is expensive/difficult to import. This may explain why some folk are under the impression it is “illegal”. Another thing to keep in mind is tobacco tax. A 10g tap box will run about $7-$8 — about the same as budget smokes. As far as shipping times, under normal circumstances, 2 weeks seems to be the max. I have received an order in a little a 5 days, but this was a sample from Toque and a very small amount. Further info about shipping times and taxes: I knew something was up when 3 weeks went by and I still hadn’t received a bulk order from Toque. Two or three months later, I received a bill from Canada Post on behalf of customs asking for 300% of the price of the snuff if I wanted to pick up my package; it was $90 in taxes on a $30 snuff order. I let them keep it and placed a new order which arrived without interference. I hope this has been somewhat helpful. If I get any new leads I will let you know.

And your snuff would probably be there in a week, give or take a few days

Right on, I like the sounds of this… Now let’s just pray that my order doesn’t get caught up in all the ruckus at customs :stuck_out_tongue: . Well this will be rather fun… Searching various stores and shops to possibly find snuff… Definitely like a treasure hunt :stuck_out_tongue: . I am pretty damn anxious for my order! I’ll probably post some sort of first snuff post or something… Anyways. Thank you for all the assistance! It is greatly appreciated. -Michael

Even though the tobacco laws are federal, enforcement varies from province to province. I was in Halifax in October of 2010 and their tobacconist stocks all the major flavours of McChrystal’s in large tins. Nasal snuff is most certainly not illegal in Canada. The “Tobacco Products Information Regulations, SOR/2000-272” have specific sections on what warnings nasal snuff must carry, how big those warnings must be and which ingredients must be listed. French translations must be included. The problem is that the testing and labeling requirements make it financially unfeasible. Canada is a small market. I sent the regulations to Roderick at Toque and I think the conclusion was, roughly, “nuts to that!” The supplier of the Halifax tobacco shop is breaking the law, but enforcement is patchy. So for the present Canadians are better off ordering from one of the many fine online services. I have ordered from Nicotine Rush, Mr. Snuff and Snuff Shop–all provided excellent service, and not once was I hit with customs duties (and I have received about 10 packages).

“Even though the tobacco laws are federal, enforcement varies from province to province” While there is a federal Tobacco Act, most laws regarding tobacco use and display, etc are provincial, like liquor laws or motor vehicle acts.

@NelsonPipeClub: yes, but the laws regarding tobacco use in public and tobacco display would not affect whether retailers are able to sell snuff (it would simply affect how they can sell it). What I meant is: the labelling laws are federal, and those are the laws that would affect whether snuff can be sold in Canada. It is possible that a province could decide to outlaw snuff altogether but to my knowledge there is no such legislation.

This is all good to know, I am glad to hear that the Tobacconist I spoke with was wrong. Maybe I should go back there sometime, with my snuff of course =P , when I receive it… I ran outside to the mailbox today to check, in my lounging clothes lol… But no snuff… It feels like a childs Christmas all over again… I am so anxious to run outside one day and find that my mailboxes little red flag is pointing up! Surely it will be here soon. Thank you again everyone for all your input into this! Just one last question =P . I’ve ordered 3 tins of F&T : High Dry Toast, Kendal Brown, and Macouba… Anyone have any say on those three? If anyone had anything to say about them that would be great, even if you don’t like them, tell me! I just like the input.

Well High Dry Toast is a must-have I think. I haven’t tried the other two, but F&T is generally highly perfumed apart from HDT, Santo Domingo and Old Paris (of the ones currently available, and in their current incarnations). Some like that, some don’t. The perfumed scents like Bordeaux, Princes Special (which is very similar to Bordeaux to my simple nose) and French Carotte had to grow on me a bit, and even then I don’t use them much. Seville is the only one I truly dislike. The Macouba is rose-scented, of course. I am partial to Maccoboy generally and GH’s English Rose for special, House of Lords occasions.

Sounds good! I have heard generally good things about HDT, I can’t wait to try it, as soon as it enters the mailbox lol. Yeah I have read some reviews, it seems quite a few people don’t seem to like Seville… Thanks again for all of this. It’s great to hear other peoples input and views and taste. So, ONE last question, I promise =P . Let’s say I made a YouTube channel, for exclusively snuff and snuff-related video. I planned on Ordering a tin of each flavor from F&T, eventually =P . And say I made a video review for each tin, would that be something interesting to view? To be honest i’ve already got the YouTube made, I just gotta wait for the snuff… I was just thinking it would be neat to post some video reviews. Tell me what you think!

That’s a great idea MikeMoose. We did have a few members (Itsuke and MrMaroon) who did this a few years ago, but I believe both members have now left the forum. Stefan

Awesome  . I just wanted to have a second opinion. Honestly I’d love to make some snuff review videos and upload them. So, as soon as my snuff order arrives, I shall begin! :stuck_out_tongue: . Thanks again Walrus. If anyone is interested, you can keep an eye out for the reviews. I’ll probably post here again when I start, but here is the YouTube, just so you have it lol. " MrMichaelSnuff " http://www.youtube.com/user/MrMichaelSnuff?feature=mhum Thank you again for the responses. Really looking forward to making some videos! As well as sniffing some snuff

Mike B: I understand your point more clearly now. I also found the relevant section of the Tobacco Act (Canada) that applies to retailers regarding labeling, specifically section 15 (1). Thank you for enlightening me. I always enjoy learning new things, and for some strange reason, reading legislation.

@NelsonPipeClub: if that floats your boat, check out sections 5(1), 5(2), 5(3), 5(6), 10 etc. of these federal regs: http://www.canlii.org/en/ca/laws/regu/sor-2000-272/latest/sor-2000-272.html These regs are what keeps snuff manufacturers from exporting to Canada commercially (too much expense for too little reward). Individual purchases (up to a certain amount, I forget how much) are exempt from the regs, which is why we can legally order snuff online.

In regards to regs keeping snuff manufacturers from exporting into Canada I know McChrystals has met the regs and is exporting into Canada. The McChrystals tin that I got at my local tobacconist had a Canadian health warning sticker along the side of the tin and a toxic contents sticker on the back in both English and French
