Canada Customs Charging $260 for a $70 order!!??

Like the title says, one of my orders which cost me 70 bucks from Mr. Snuff just got flagged for $260 dollars in customs. Is it just me or does that sound criminally high? I’m considering sending it back and just reordering the order with the hopes that it makes it through. It would be way cheaper that’s way. Anyone else had something like this happen?

@Smokey_Cloudjumper it sucks when this happens. Just refuse it and with luck we’ll get it back to the warehouse. In that case just pay for the reship. With luck we’ll have a solution. We are attempting to do a similar thing with Canada as we have for the USA. We pre-clear all orders and then use local mail service. Currently we have a test order sitting with a broker in Alberta. If it clears and taxes are reasonable then we will slowly but surely start to ship all orders via the broker. This will greatly increase the chances of delivery and guarantee none of these ridiculous charges. Also delivery times should decrease just as in USA. Given that we still deal with Canadapost there are no guarantees at this point. However I am hopeful that customs delays will not be an issue. This has taken many months to set up with a boatload of paperwork. Frankly you’ll see a grown man cry if it doesn’t work, but I am cautiously optimistic. Dave

Its ridiculous, i had a similar problem with cigars from the States. I left customs keep them. Im hoping i wont have the same issue now, im waiting for snuff from mr snuff from the States. I didn’t realise they also ship from England !

Ok. Grown man crying.

No joy on the new Canada setup. It worked briefly then customs got crazy again and that was that. 5 grand down the tubes.

On to plan C. I’ll let you know if that works out, otherwise it is back to regular mail with a high fail rate.

@MrSnuff I have a Mr. Snuff order coming via DHL! It has gone from London to Frankfurt and then forwarded to Canada. I’ve had great experiences from Rosinksi with DHL, so I’m happy to see this VS Royal Mail (I am waiting on an other Mr. Snuff order shipped on Jan 4 via RM, too.) Sad that the Alberta broker didn’t work out : (

Yep. This is plan C in action.

Let me know if you receive it without too much hassle. And also how long it took fro shipping notification till you receive it, if you dont mind.

Thanks.

@MrSnuff I’ll let you know. For some reason it has just arrived in Montreal, Quebec instead of Pearson International Airport in Mississauga, Ontario which is a short drive from my home and the way Mr. Rosinski’s orders arrived. Pearson is very busy because it handles international packages sent to Toronto, and my parcels have been clearing there same day with no duties, taxes, or other fees. I always purchase no more than five 200g max packages per order, because of what I read on a Canada Post website regarding the labelling/stamping requirements for tobacco, but I’m not sure if that has much to do with my experiences so far

"Please note: Labelling and stamping requirements for tobacco products don’t apply when you import 5 units or less of packaged tobacco for personal use.

We define a unit as:

  • 200 cigarettes
  • 50 cigars
  • 200 tobacco sticks
  • 200 g of manufactured tobacco"

From Specific customs requirements for controlled items | Canada Post

I do wonder if this means I can’t order a 250g tub or what!

I have no idea why it would end up at any airport as a final destination?

Thanks for the Canada Post information. That implies to me that if one unit is defined as 200g, you can order up to 1kg, but not in any single tub greater than 200g. Therefore you are correct. A single 250g is not allowed.

Bit daft really.

I have never had a snuff package nabbed by customs (in Ontario) and I have ordered over 1kg on many occasions including multiple 400g bags from Toque in one package.

@MrSnuff the airport isn’t the final destination, just the entry point to the country. I’m in Toronto, so international parcels land at Pearson International Airport on the outskirts of Toronto and presented to customs there, then they can be out for delivery here the next day. For some reason this order landed in Montreal, Quebec, the next province over. It was cleared by customs by 1am and transported over land by Canada Post to Toronto, Ontario, where it arrived four days later on Feb 17.

Tracking for my order began on January 31 and the parcel was received by DHL in London on February 4, arrived in Germany on Feb 10, Canada (Quebec) on Feb 12 then sent by ground transport to Ontario for Feb 17.

So 17 days shipping with no hassles… I like!
But my first Mr. Snuff order that was shipped on Jan 4 via Royal Mail is still nowhere to be found. I wish I could replace it with DHL shipping, the tracking is a huge positive and you keep my business because of that!

Good to know!! I wonder how much they’d try to charge if they did nab that great big package :scream:

I’ve just had a parcel from the US enter Canada via Montreal again, so whatever is going on is definitely unrelated

I was just hit with $119.02 in duty and taxes by bloody Canada customs on a $78.98 order :poop::skull_and_crossbones:

@Anthonyb, that’s terrible! I’ve yet to have any issues with US customs. This does sort of remind me of the old days when shipping from Mr. Snuff was generally equal to, or in excess of the cost of the product. Not their fault, and I am SO glad that situation has been mitigated.

That sucks, looks like they are starting to crack down on snuff now. I remember for years I would order swedish snus and never had one package knabbed by customs then all of a sudden over 80% of them were getting caught by customs, its the reason I stopped using snus. Now it looks like the same thing is starting to happen to snuff.
