I tried skoal (extra rich) pouches when i was in the US recently. I was running low on snuff and started panicking. I went to a tobacconist and they had no nasal snuff but they had skoal. I had a rough idea what it was so thought what the heck. My first experience was bad; put a pouch in sucked the damn thing and swallowed, bad move! Once I’d googled how you actually used these things I really enjoyed them. So much so I’m actaully craving one of these bad boys. I got hold of some Oliver Twist back home, not bad but not as good. Apparently skoals a no go in the UK, anyone know how to get hold of some? I wouldn’t mind trying snus now as well? Thanks
I believe you can order if through The Northerner from their US warehouse.
Ordering online is the only way to go. I would recommend picking up snus if you’re going to use oral tobacco–it’s apparently a lot safer than American dip. Oliver Twist doesn’t have nearly enough nicotine for me but they taste nice. They are way overpriced as well.
The only products you will see in the uk are Oliver twist and old fashioned twist tobacco that can be chewed or smoked, for either of them you would need a very good traditional tobbaconist or snuffstore. As said, everything else has to be ordered online but it’s getting increasingly more troublesome to get snus - what was a couple of days order time is now a couple of weeks as it has to be ordered from warehouses in the states. Also, bizarrely, some people have been unable to order at all from the UK from the website, so it’s a kind of patchy service now. I’ve now ditched snus as just too much hassle. Thankfully the best snuff in the world comes from the UK and I’m first and foremost a snuff taker.
I have a package waiting to be collected. This must be my 11 tins of Extreme. It has, as you say, taken a good two weeks to get here from PA. But I am interested in trying this as another weapon against intractable tobacco combustion. I saw an email today to the effect that we can now buy from Sweden.
That’s very good news if it’s true, maybe it will go back on my nicotine menu.
Yeah dude. Skoal is kinda yucky. I know some people who used it in high school. I never liked it even with the massive buzz I got when I was a young smoker. If you are going the oral route, I’d very much recommend snus over dipping tobacco. Also, dip is much more potent loose than in pouches. It doesn’t seem to matter as much with snus.
Can’t take credit, this is from my good man @snuffpub(on this forum) … we just had a discussion about snus vs. snuff vs. other oral tobacco safety on another forum, here is the crux of it re:chew/dip safety: “Dr. Rutqvist said that of American snuff users that have been using products manufactured in the last twenty years, there is a 2% increase in likelihood of oral cancer than those that have never used tobacco before, which is not statistically significant enough to show a correlation between smokeless tobacco and oral cancer, unlike the studies that were done prior to the refinement in production technique, which showed a definite link and is the basis for all of our giant warning labels and the EU snus ban. (The percentages for snus are even lower at 1.5%). 20 or so years ago the American smokeless companies copied the Swedes and started using less fire-cured tobacco in favor of liquid smoke flavoring (which brought the TSNA count down) and streamlined their manufacturing processes so that bacterial growth was less of an issue than it had been previously. Therefore the dip of today is a lot different than the dip of twenty, thirty and forty years ago. However, most major brands still use a lot of artificial sweeteners and/or sugar, which causes gum disease and tooth rot. But, if you can’t afford snus or can’t take snuff and you still want to use tobacco, try a Swedish Match brand like Timberwolf or Red Man. According to everyone spoken with at Swedish Match AB, there is absolutely nothing different about these brands (safety or quality-wise) than their Swedish snus brands. They are just flavored differently for the American market. In the words of one higher ranking official at SM, if Timberwolf and Red Man were to be sold in Sweden, they would meet the Gothia Tek (and in turn, the Swedish FDA) standards for food-grade snus, which is something that even some of the other Swedish snus manufacturers can’t say.”
I wouldnt go with skoal, copenhagen is a waaaay better dip. You can buy it on northerner. My all time favourite dips are copenhagen straight long cut and copenhagen wintergreen.
I have been a long time user of Skoal Straight Long Cut, but I prefer Copenhagen Black (Bourbon) when it is available. Sadly, they only release it periodically. Great flavor and the last time it was released it was available as a long cut, opposed to a mid cut released prior to that.
Short answer no it’s illegal to sell them in the UK. No one seemed to mention that I guess because it’s obvious but yeah you can’t walk into a store and buy can of dip including specialty shops or tobacconists. You can order dip and snus on northerner. 1. Pouches suck, get long cut and learn to dip it is my advice! The long cut tastes better and it’s more potent, you get more etc. That said the wg xtra pouches were pretty good and I know rich is pretty good in lc. 2. I recommend snus swedish match brands aren’t available so get Jakobsons mint, wg, classic strong etc and V2 snus which are also good. It’s kind of expensive compared to nasal snuff but go ahead if you want. The jakobsons tastes really good. 3. Option 3 for local stuff is you can buy a can of makla which is more like snus than dip, the taste isn’t great from what I hear though.
If you are intending to start experimenting with oral tobacco don’t leave chewing tobacco out. To my taste Redman and similar chews are much more pleasant and easy to use. people talk about having to spit with chew but Ive used Redman for a long while now, on and off, and never had any need to spit, it also tastes very nice and has great nic content. Snus does a job, but you couldn’t call it delicious.
Love Redman gold blend, Stokers Apple and Cherry as far as chew goes. Dip wise, Copenhagen LC straight is wonderful! Redman and Grizzly straight is good also. I order mine from northerner, takes a while to get here but they are pretty cheap.
I’ve been eyeing those SG and GH pigtail twists to try out as a chew. Anyone have recommendations on those since I’ve never used a twist before? I know some are described as dual purpose pipe/chew but are there any to avoid or any that make for a really good chewing tobacco? I drifted away from oral tobacco as I got into snuff but I’m finding it more convenient for when I do outside yard work.
If you are not hooked on oral tobacco already, I advise to not try it, it’s the hardest to quit, I think, I’ve been about 3 weeks without now, and yet I lay in bed at night thinking of buying a can of Copenhagen. I do think though, dip, chew, and snus is better than smoking. If snus is 99% “safer”, I’d say dip is 85% safer, it’s not the tobacco, or nictotine, I think is bad, it’s the imhaling of burning smoke into the lungs. But oral tobacco can wear away at your mouth. If you want a Swedish Match dip, don’t forget Longhorn also. But I still think Copenhagen Original Longcut is the best.
I’ve used the pigtails and ropes. Just cut a coin and half or quarter it and leave it in the side of the mouth. Flavour varies from OK to very nice. The nic hit is significant, ranking imho with the Oden’s Extreme I’m trying. Surely the very cheapest way to get a significant nic hit excepting perhaps snuff. 50 gs would last a very long time. Recommended.
Yes I do favour strong flavours, unsugared espresso that sort of thing. The trick is to put it there and leave it alone to gently let the tobaccoy goodness seep out. A small peppermint in the other side of the mouth can be interesting. I don’t find this Oden’s much nicer tasting though I noticed some salt at first that I could do without. Each to his own though.
Yes chewing is fatal. Treat it like a portion and just leave it alone. The flavours can be better than this Oden’s imho. A small piece like an Oliver Twist, nice and hard.
Don’t know what happened there or how to get rid of that.
Thanks for the info on the ropes and tails. I’ll try one out on my next snuff order. Regular chew is locally available in abundance here, just never tried the rope style.
