I received a couple coupons for 2 free cans. This stuff is crap and it’s not even real SNUS. I took apart the bags and it’s long cut and dry. There is nearly no taste of tobacco. Tossed it all in the trash and now I have 2 decent snuff tins…thanks Camel! Anyone know the best way to neutralize the lingering scent from an old tin or a plastic container? I wanted to reuse some empty Lakatia 1860 containers, because they’re pretty nice dispensers, but can’t get that smoky scent out…
you could at least have tried to make snuff out of them. getting the scent out of plastic might be hard. active coal might help though…
I got the same coupons. However, I purchased a tin a couple of weeks ago. The flavor was ok. It started to make my gums bleed a little by the time I was done with the tin. Though, snuff did the same to my nose after the first week or so, and has not happened since. Still, I think I’ll stick with my snuff.
That sounds like a really bad product. Oral snuff has never made my gums bleed especialy not snus which makes me wonder what is in it especialy if it is long cut which reduces the absorbtions of the nicoteen (hence it would need something stronger then bicarbonate to get it in the system). Though I could be wrong it just sounds like a bad product. Bagged snus which is finely ground and very wet is gentler on ones gums then bandits are.
The Swedes should sue!
Sort of unrelated, but anyway. I just got an email saying that Skoal.net has transfered to the domain name Snus.de! Now my only order ever to try Snus was from Skoal.net because I thought they were located in the US. Their prices alone where almost double what you would pay when you got to one of the Snus webpages overseas. Come to find out they too are located overseas and thats where the delivery came from. Don’t buy from them no matter what their domain is. They are overpriced for the same exact products you can get from another site.
Is snus pretty much the same thing as the pouches sold by Copenhagen and Skoal? I got some free samples of Camel Snus and found them to be very lacking. I’ve also been very disappointed with the pouches mentioned above. Maybe I’m missing the whole ‘snus’ thing but my experiences with the pouches has turned me off to the whole concept. I also tried some Stonewall tablets and found them be a mere substitute for nicotine withdrawals when discretion is needed.
Snus is spitfree but the portions do look just like Bandits. Snus is quite satisfying to most users, especially the “sterk” (strong) versions, which are designed for heavier nicotine users. All the ingredients in snus are listed by law as snus is classified a food product, an especially salty one to many newbies. The low TSNA of snus was an initial draw but these levels in US dip are quite low nowadays too. edit: Camel SNUS is a poor imitation of Swedish snus and bears little resemblance and little nicotine. Some people love it though and to each their own.
I wouldn’t say snus is totally spitfree, just ok to gut the juice. The pouch versions of cope or skoal are not that great, I don’t really care for Skoal but Cope is a lot better in loose form. And not all snus is in pouches. Stonewall is fairly low nicotine, at just 4.0mg per tab. Some of your more mild snus is around 8mg per dose avg. And like the ekstra sterk being stronger at 15mg per portion.
I would, it is spitfree. I didn’t say saliva free but spit-free. I don’t spit when I snus, I do salivate and just swallow the juice. Being spitfree is one of the things that drew me to snus in the first place, and the fact that it’s easier on my gums.
Spyro, please don’t let camel turn you off from snus. It is completely unlike Swedish snus, not even close. For folks in Ohio and Georgia, Triumph snus is available. It is made in Sweden to Swedish snus standards, but is MUCH sweeter then any traditional Swedish snus.
I still occasionally spit with snus especially with a bigger pinch of loose. I don’t always want to gut the juice. Copenhagen could be considered spitless if you choose to not spit. I can handle gutting it like snus, I just choose to spit it. My old shop teacher used to never spit when dipping cope. But if it makes you salivate, you can’t say its totally spitless. But it is easier to swallow compared to others.
I got a tin of Camel Spice snus a few months ago, it tastes like assholes and armpits. I can’t wait until my order from swedish snus comes, hopefully this week.
Lol Troutstroker, I guess you’re right that some people don’t consider snus to the spit-free product it’s cracked up to be! I just always considered it that way and that’s actually one of it’s biggest draws for me being an old Cope user. I do love Cope but between the gum damage and the public spitting it does have it’s drawbacks. I used to swallow Cope on occasion too, especially in class but would never consider that the spit-free product that snus is, or I should say, advertised as.
Got a few cans of snus in the mail today from getsnus.com I got General Onyx, General Maxi, Nick & Johnny West, Nick & johnny East, Claq Qui & my freebie can was of Ettan I really want to like snus, but so far I’m having issues with my pallate. For some reason every snus seems to have a flowery type flavor to me. I’m sure I just need to get used to them and I’m going to give them a longer run than the last time I tried them and got completely turned off after ordering a can of Roots Pilsner flavored which about made me vomit… Nothing In my life has entered my mouth which was as vile as the Roots Pilsner Snus… I do love the Claq Qui though…unleashed a nice lttle buzz and had a nice bitter fruity undertone to it, definately my favorite so far. Any of you guys try any of the Wintergreen offerings yet? (Offroad, General ?) I actually enjoy the flavor of the Camel Frost I tried, it goes great with a pinch of Prime Minister. Only problem is it has absolutely no nic-kick whatsoever in my opinion…
Too bad those didn’t appeal to you Poo-Diddy, those are some of the finer tasting snus, especially Ettan, General and Onyx, imho of course. I like the Offroad Wintergreen Lös myself and use it almost daily, it’s a little milder than American dip but has a great flavor. I haven’t tried the General Wintergreen yet though. The funny thing is that none of those you listed are the flowery types, which were an unpleasant surprise to me at first, although I did grow to like a couple of em (the flowery types that is). I would give it some time, some of my initial favorites I now can’t stomach and vica versa. edit: I’m surprised you didn’t catch a buzz on the General Maxi too, they have 14mg per pouch.
Lucky Strike is a good snus, but they have nothing in common with Lucky Strike cigarettes except a name and tobacco.
Snuffdog, I actually havn’t opened up the Ettan or General Maxi yet. Maybe flowery isn’t the right word for what I am tasting, maybe it is the Bergamont that I need to get used to. I guess the main thing is I’ve dipped Kodiak Wintergreen for so long and Swedish snus is a pretty drastic difference in flavor that I just need to get used to… Like I said, as long as I don’t have another Roots Pilsner experience, I’m going to keep at it…
Honestly, I like the flowery ones like Goteborgs Rape 1&2. I’m going to have to get some Gustavus too because I’ve heard it’s flowery and I’d probably like it alright.
I think you got something there with your theory about bergamot lxskllr, I was thinking along those lines when reading their intertwining history and dual use, makes perfect sense to flavor the whole grist. Sycho, I like both the Gote Rapes too but find them more berry flavored than floral. Gote’s Prima Fin has a slight floral character with tobacco though, and is quite tasty too. But if you want a stronger floral essence and you haven’t tried these yet; try Gottlandsnus Yellow and Kronan…yes Kronan (judge it for yourself, you might like it). Both great snus with a pleasant bitterness that some don’t appreciate.
so, i got some camel snus the other day and i have to say i quite like it. i havn’t used “real” snus yet which is prolly alot better but for now the camel will work just fine for at work. I tried frost which is kind of a sweet minty flavor of some sort and mellow which is kind of a sweet mellow “straight” flavor.
I tried the whole Camel SNUS thing. It just didn’t take care of my nicotine needs. As for real SNUS. I loved the idea of it, so I ordered some from Northerner. I really gave it a fair shake, but it just made me feel quesy. I think it’s just too much moisture for me. I can dip some Cope or Skoal all day long, but I can’t handle SNUS.
which tin???
Troutstoker suggested I try a free sample tin available at getsnus.com. I chose the General White Portion. The other option (unflavored) is the General mini portion. I picked the white mainly because its bigger. I have no idea how I will take to it. I’m guessing from what I’ve read so far that I will not notice much of anything. Either that or I will fall desperatly head over heels in love with it as I did with dipping snuff many years ago (we are now divorced). I was hoping it would be here today. I’m anxious, I’ll keep my progress posted on this tread. PS. I first heard of Snus a couple of years ago. I told myself, no, No, No!, NO!, NO!!! Never again with the oral stuff!! I don’t listen to myself very well.
General White is some really good snus, Xander. It’s got a nice tobacco flavor with bergamot and lemon and a bit of a peppery tone. It’s definitely become one of my go to snus brands, so I think you may like it a lot. If not, you can always mail it to me! LOL And that goes for anybody that tries any Swedish Match or other decent snus that doesn’t like it. I might even trade a tin or bullet of snuff if it’s something that I can bear to part with.
There are only a few snus I’ve not liked. The offroad Wintergreen (which has a strange other flavour I can’t place). And the probe whiskey (with licorice flavour.). with both its the flavour combination. That said General is an amazing snus by the way.
lol @ Xander, i think many of us suffer from slective hearing of the self.
Xander that was at getsnus.com, and it should arrive soon because they have fast shipping. And yes the General White is a good snus. A great snus for someone trying it for the first time. And like mentioned before, if you don’t enjoy your first experience, give it a little more time over the following week.
@Trout. I beg your pardon. getsnus.com it was. I shall edit the post for posterity. “Give it a little more time” he says he hehe he! You sir, are a little devil on my left shouder! Enough time to get hooked right? That’s what the kindly folks at getsnus are hoping. I had intendend to finish the whole tin, no matter what anyway. Back in the day when I was experimenting with dipping snuff I bought a tin of Copenhagen, and two different Skoal varieties, just to see what would happen! I intended to finish them all before I made any decisions. All I learned was that after the 3rd of 4th time, I really liked it in either variety. As mentioned before I was hooked on that for 3 years and then some. PS. She left me in the divorce, not vice versa. Hard as it may to be to believe, my supply dried up. I actually could not get dip without considerable trouble, so I decided it was time to let go. My first wife (smoking cigarettes) helped me ease the pain. Now with snuff, I guess I practicing bigamy again. If snus enters into this love triangle, what do we call it?
Xander, with some snus an open can will “age” a bit. So if you hate it at first a day or two in the fridge might change the taste a bit. I have a few snus that I can’t stand when they are freshly opened, so I have to break the seal and let the sit.
Just as with snuff sometimes, really fresh snus sometimes has an ammonia odor when you first open it. If that disturbs you (doesn’t bother me) you may want to open the can and let it air a bit. Leaving it open to air too long may dry it out though, so you may wanna stick the snus in the fridge and just open in once in a while…that should be sufficient to improve the smell.
So, I’m in a local convenience store last night and I notice they have this huge display of Camel Snus. I asked the clerk about it and she told me they sell a lot of it. I tried some free samples in the past but didn’t care for it but apparently someone is using this stuff. It didn’t give me much nicotine and I also have a hang up about swallowing tobacco. I’m thinking it can’t possibly be healthy to do that. To be fair tho, I’ve never tried the ‘real’ snus, i.e Swedish stuff and the like.
I tend to swallow a bit just using snuff. I think its very small quantities in both though.
I don’t think there’s anyway around swallowing some degree of snuff. I keep a cup on hand and spit out my sinus drainage constantly. I just try to minimize it as much as possible. I do tend to take in rather large sniffs tho and some of the brands will drain more than others. As nasty as it may sound, some flavors actually leave a pleasant taste in the throat. Tho I digress, this has nothing to do with snus or dip.
Digress all you wish. The thread started with a very different topic. You’re the one who tried to bring it back to Camel. We’ve all digressed. Anyway, I spit out whenver I can too. I also know what you mean by the pleasant taste in the throat, especially among the American Sweet Snuffs. What bothers me, is that it didn’t used to be pleasant. Smoking which is unpleasant at first, beccomes very pleasant with repeated use. Snuff taking, both oral and nasal also go from being unpleasant to pleasant. Do you see the pattern? Is my throat getting coating with and absorbing nicotine regularly becoming addictive? When I dipped, I used to get an actual sort of itch of sorts in my lip when I hadn’t had one in awhile. I know I need to smoke when I get a sort of ache or itch in my lungs. I think in addition to the actual nicotine in the bloodstream, which is addictive, the actual place of entry seems to get addicted on its own. Anyway, in trying to prevent this (as I think the throat is much more dangerous place for this to be than anywhere else) I am practicing a method of force blowing air out my nose (along the sinus) whenever I feel the snuff working its way up there. If it gets too far, I give myself a big hankie blow, then wait a few minutes and take another pinch.
Xander, I can’t comment on smoking since I only do the occasional pipe and a very rare cigar now and then. I know that from snuffing a whole lot of the stuff goes down the old pipe. Try keeping a cup or bottle around when you snuff and get in the habit of hawking and spitting just after a pinch or two. You’ll find the container is quite full of brackisch fluid which would otherwise end up in your gut. I personally feel that snuff is the safest form of nicotine absorption but I shudder at the idea of ingesting that stff into my GI tract.
Since my wastebasket is usually full of used tisues, I usually just spit into it. I kept a spitting cup around the first week or so I snuffed. I had a few horribly messy accidents back in my dipping days, so I stopped keeping the cup around. If swallowed, I’d actually expect the GI tract to neutralize most of it. There’s so much acid and liquid down there I would think it would get both neutralized and diluted. Anyway, this should all be short term, as I expect to be able to keep it out of the throat entirely, before long.
I know that those full cups of dip juice can be messy. I knocked a full one off the counter at work one day. That stuff went everywhere. Yuck. I haven’t dipped in 3 days. Thankfully, the snuff is taking care of my nicotine needs.
i don’t see swallowing a little snuff as a big worry it seems to me that as safe as snuff seems to be that it shouldnt cause too much harm. After all it is only a plant and i eat those everyday
right on josh !
OK as posted before, I would update you when my free sample from getsnus.com arrived. It is here and it is in my mouth. General white portion, that is. The taste is not unpleasant. I am only now starting to feel a little buzz, and its been in about 10 minutes. Haven’t smoked or snuff for awhile in order to get the full experience. I’m having a hard time just letting it sit there. I’m trying to resist the urge to squeeze it with my lip. What is normal? Also I’m tending to burp a bit.
Pushing on the lip squeezing the portion is acceptable, I do it. Also swallowing tobacco juice can cause indigestion on some people especially on a empty stomach & those not use to it. You may find it better to occasionally take a sip of liquid while its in your lip till you get more use to it.
yeah, i have been drinking tea the whole time. The heat of the tea helps too.
I don’t know if this happens with snus, but back when I used to use dip I’d get heartburn and acid reflux every now and then. Might be something to watch for. Maybe keep some Tums on hand just in case.
A lot of that problem (not all) is caused by the actual spitting of saliva especially if your dipping a lot & spitting the whole time. Your stomach & throat need that saliva, it helps to keep stomach acid down. I would occasionally have the same problem on heavy dipping days especially if I went long periods without eating or drinking anything.
The acid reflux is the main reason I stopped dipping. It became chronic and unbearable.
Trout, That makes sense about excessive spitting. Never considered that but now that I use snuff instead there’s no need to worry about it. I still spit when I get drainage but not nearly as much as I used to with dip or chew. I burned out quick on chew since it just didn’t seem to hold its flavor long enough and tore the heck out of my mouth.
I too quit dipping due to the terrible heartburn, I was getting it 3-4 times a day. Snus gives me a little heartburn occasionally, but nothing like what I got with the dip. I still dip and chew on occasion, especially when I’m hunting or fishing when snuffing isn’t practical, but 99% of my tobacco use now is snuff.
hey acid, you shouldn’t use it like dip. You know that right? It goes in the upper lip and just sits. No need for dipping or spitting. I’d recommend getsnus.com free can offer to get a taste of proper snus. I liked it, maybe too much if you get my meaning. The little lump in my lip became very comfortable there, to the point that I didn’t want to remove it, long after the majority of the flavor was gone. Kept me from smoking too!
I have heard a lot (read: A LOT) about the Camel Snus, though mostly bad. Perhaps, the expectations are part of the bad reviews - I don’t know. I have yet to try it myself, but I don’t think I would be inclined to do so. I live in the heartland of snus (Sweden), and have so many wonderful snus products available to me at every corner store, so why bother, right? The first time I tried snus a few years ago, I didn’t like it at all! I had a tin of General and a tin of Montecristo - I wound up chucking both tins. First I did a lot of spitting due to the excess saliva buildup. I quickly realized, that I was the only one doing that, so I swallowed the juiced up saliva instead. I got sick to my stomach, unlike anything I had ever tried before with tobacco (hookah, pipe, cigs, snuff…), so I concluded it simply wasn’t for me. Recently I decided to give snus another chance and bought a tin of Ettan (portion). I’m not entirely sure why I decided to give it another chance. Either I don’t remember all too well or I simply didn’t want to believe that it could be so bad, since so many Swedes use it. I can document that both statements are entirely correct The experience is entirely different now. I don’t get sick to my stomach anymore and the whole experience of snus is quite remarkable. My nic tolerance hasn’t changed much over the years, so I’m not entirely sure why (or what) things have changed. I’m not (yet) a snusaholic, though. My primary nicotine delivery system is still Camel unfiltered, but given the ease of use of snus, I would not be surprised if that changed. Snuff is my secondary system. It just might turn out that snus and snuff is a match made in heaven. If you have been giving Camel snus a whirl and decided against snus based on that experience, give some real Swedish snus a try. Start small, make sure you have eaten something and have a beverage at the ready (preferably plain, chilled water). Give something like Ettan, Göteborgs Rapé or General a go. The prickly sensation on your gum and lip will go away fairly quickly and if you start feeling a bit queasy, dump the portion, and have a drink or a snack and then try again. It worked for this Dane, at least. Snus products of the “stark” variety give me the same powerful nic buzz that cigs used to give me when I first started smoking. The cool part is that it doesn’t seem to wear off the more you use it. I don’t know why, but personally, I’m not exactly disliking it Snus - savory and delightful.
I tried the Camel Snus first when I stopped smoking, the whole smoke free spit free sign at the gas station had me interested. After the first pouch, I lost interest. I fed the tin to the garbage and went out and bought snuff. I’m just not the kind of person for oral tobacco products, but I’m not doubting there is probably great snus is Sweden and such since that’s where it originated. All in all I give the Camel Snus 2 thumbs down.
The amount of juice is actualy very little, especialy if you put it in a low saliva area like the front of your mouth over your front teeth. The chances of it causing cancer are much less than American dip snuffs due to the way the tobacco is prepared. Further, if you are a smoker, you are twice as likely to develop pancreatic cancer than being a snus user (and you shouldn’t be swallowing smoke). Hell, even coffee is linked to pancreatic cancer. But if you want to, you still have the option of spitting snus juice. Just like the nasal drainage you get from snuff, do you spit it out or swallow it? Its probably worse to swallow that then snus juicce.
I’m still on the snuff side of the fence having only tried the Camel Snus, American dips, chews and pouches. I concede that I probably am missing out on an entirely different form of tobacco enjoyment, but I’m really wrapped up in the sunuff world right now and have too many irons in the fire to branch off into snus. Maybe later on. Sounds like you guys are having some great experiences with it tho. Thanks for the insights and enjoy it.
