Is this statement true? My oldest bulk is 3 years old so I haven’t enough experience of the long lasting effects of storing bulk but I get the impression many bulk snuffs improve/mature with age. And we all know tins go stale. Thoughts?
seems to be how it goes. Hard to be sure. At minimum bulk stays good.
Oh boy. I’ve got 500 g of Viking dark (probably down to 480) stowed away in giant mason jars. The possibility of it maturing just made things more interesting.

@TomStrasbourg - I could see Viking Dark maturing well. I wonder about the highly perfumed snuffs maturing, even in bulk. Eventually the scenting will dissipate somewhat id think. Several folks recommend putting all snuffs in mason jars or something similar, which seems like a good idea to me.
Yes. anaerobic bacteria in air tight container created sugar crystals. SWS Mull of Oa is quite smokey I plan on putting some away for 3 years minimum to let it sweeten up a bit.
@basement_shaman Yes, I had a tin of Virginia Flake that after about 5 years had a nice coating of sugar crystals on the tobacco. Sublime.
Some of my thoughts; Snuff is amazing when fresh and generally not designed to be aged. Tins can be stored in an anaerobic environment just the same. Old tins and original unopened containers may have a resale and collection value that should not be ignored. Unlike pipe tobacco, anaerobic and/or aerobic activity will be minimal within an alkalized and salted snuff. Snuffs may age gracefully and aging attempts may not be futile. To age with or without oxygen is debatable and warrants investigation. Mass has an obvious effect on preservation which bulk storage benefits from.
