Is anyone ,like me, thinking of treating himself or herself to a bulk buy for Christmas? If so what have you got in mind? I’m thinking the Viking Dark is a strong contender, with plenty of flavour and strength. What’s going to be in your stocking?
I would like a J&H Wilsons SP n°1(more that I remember SP’s is something you have in esteem) but I don’t know if it exist. For the moment I’ve Choosen to take several 25 g tins…To feel more secure -)
I just made a bulk purchase not long ago, so I’m not likely to make another so soon. Instead, my Christmas gift to myself will probably be a copy of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
I haven’t ordered yet but will definitely be treating myself soon! Hopefully my order will consist of some Grunt…I am very patiently waiting!
Hi @gandalf, just to answer your question J&H Wilsons SPno.1 is still produced. They had a manufacturing issue with the 25g vacuum sealed tins over the last couple of months but we have been promised a delivery for Monday.

@backyshop How about Top Mill? Any progress there?
Nope looks like it is gone for good but! %*%*$% tobacco giants!
But on the up side I have just heard a rumour that Samuel Gawith produce a snuff that is very very, near as damit, cats whisker away from the original top mill and funnily enough we will be stocking this in 25 tins in the near future. The name will be disclosed as soon as I receive it.
If I haven’t jumped on here and let you know the name in a fortnight please drop me an email to jog my dwindling memory https://www.thebackyshop.co.uk/pages/contact\\_us
SG already have already SP No 1 High Mill. It’s amongst my favourite SPs. perhaps they’ll go for SP No 2 High/Top Mill. Just bought a small tub of J&H SP no 1 from the only reasonable tobacconist in town. Forgot to fill my box this am. £1. You used to be able to buy a country for that.
I’d love to make another bulk purchase… but I’m pretty sure I would be spending Christmas at the funeral home if I did.
@petersuki I thought that and have ordered the SP No1 High Mill but I was informed by someone in the know that this isn’t the case and they ahve one that is a closer match. I shall let you know in due course
@backyshop Would be very interested in an SG ringer for topmill. It’s not High mill and I can’t imagine it is any of the crests. The only other S.P they list is called Scotch, which I have not tried.
O.K, just looked up Scotch on snuff reviews and I doubt that it is this either, from the accounts I have read.
Lavender Light perhaps?
Unfortunately i’m not going to know the name until I receive it as when I was placing the order I just mentioned a certain snuff takers name and Bob knew which snuff I wanted but couldn’t recall the name. (Just that it wasn’t SP No.1 High Mill) I don’t like to bug them as the longer they spend on the phone the longer it takes for our delivery to arrive and SG have never heard of next day delivery.
To add to the delay SG have run out of tins at the moment, which may be everyone bulking up for xmas so we aren’t going to find out for a couple of weeks. (I do hope the wait will justify the suspense I seem to have built up here)
@backyshop I am quite enjoying the suspense and mystery.
I’ll give it a go. I’ve run pretty well the whole range of snuffs available but have more or less settled on the SPs with some darker sorts for contrast. Another SG SP is bound to be good. But I know all about SG and some slight delays, though they seem to work pretty hard to get over them!
Just had a snuff of their High Mill, ‘praise shall never end’. A-typical but lovely. Stronger than you think. Does the 200g tub of McChrystal’s I ordered mean that I have bought my Xmas bulk? No I think one more bulk buy against a rainey day. So I too am really keen to see their latest SP.
I will be ordering a McC Clove 200g tub and re stocking O&G before Christmas.
@petersuki they are grafters and full of character, they have no modern machinery so it’s all done by hand, which will go someway to explaining why there products are so good. A quicker service would make my job a hell of a lot easier but what changes/sacrifices would they have to make to achieve it? And I quite enjoy ringing them every week for a very heightened blue conversation as to where my %*% order is with a suitable response as to where my ^&*^&* cheque is. There aren;t many suppliers we can have so much banter with.
I’ve often thought that SG’s motto should be, “We will sell no f*^#&$ baccy before its time!” ;) Nevertheless, we endure the wait, because they make good products.
Fast Food- Fast Baccy. You’re probably right.
I tried making a proper Christmas order last night from Wilsons of Sharrow but all those usual online shopping problems like forgetting the verification code confused me, so I just renewed one of my old orders, which is handy function to have. Might do an other order, there’s still time.
I don’t think I’ll bother with a Christmas Order. The post around here seems to be collasping under the immense strain. :-S
Notice The Black Swan Shoppe have the 25g tins of SG High Mill as well as a new range of other SG snuffs in the 25g tins. I think a trip into town is in order!

I’m intrigued:

I think I’ll give them both a shot.
@Talljim I’m intrigued too. Too bad they won’t ship to USA anymore. I love the description; it seems the phrase “sneeze box” is catching on. Good job @Snuffhead.
that stuff does sound good.
I’m popping in to get a tin of each on wednesday, so I’ll report back…
@Xander fame at last!
@Xander I agree. I wish they still did too. There are some snuffs on the website that I would love to try.
Maybe Talljim could make a side business shipping to the States, to all his ‘friends’! Do you have a paypal account @Talljim? Just kidding, but not really… We need some help over here on this side of the pond.
@Talljim I may be in a better position, in a few days time. To tell the difference to see if the J&H Wilsons Top Mill No.1 are very similar as the Sam Gawith, as I just opened a vacuum tin of J&H Top Mill No.1 All you will find is the little blue tins of dry snuff.
I intend to order S G from Black Swan later today.
Well, I have the SP No 1 (top mill no1 substitute) from the Black Swan Shoppe, both before me and up my nose. All I can say, is that if you want something that smells the same as J&H Wilsons Top Mill, you won’t find it here. What you do have is a wonderful plain SP with a medium moist, medium grind. The first smell that hits you is that wonderful leathery tobacco scent that SG do so well, there’s definitely some citrus, but mainly as a subtle back note. As it’s vacuum packed, it’s much moister than top mill, and much easier to take. If you like SPs I’m sure you’ll find this a winner, they’re not my favourites, but I could certainly see this one becoming a firm favourite with me, as I’m more a fan of the leathery, earthy, naturally tobacco scented snuffs. This is just a first impression from a couple of sniffs, so I’ll report back when I’ve had a bit more.
I have a 25g tin of J&H
Wilson Top Mill No1 so I can draw some comparisons with Sam Gawith SP No1. It’s
the same colour and texture and very similar in taste. Maybe not as strong in
the bergamot as the Top Mill No1, but then I’ve had a Tonka bean in the tin for
some time to keep it fresh. Well done Kris for getting Bob of Sam Gawith to come up with
substitute. Not true the same, very near. But I feel it fills the hole.
Nose hole?
