I read somewhere (probably here) that many people use snuff to brush their teeth. Is this true? If so, why? What are the benefits?
Abrasive powder + bicarb/salt it might well actually clean your teeth somewhat, better than water alone anyway. Also gives you a nic hit and the Indian snuffs that they do this with can taste good. I don’t really understand it myself though really. I read it ruins the enamel too.
Yes - snuff is used as a dentrifice in India. I have also read about damage to tooth enamel, and given that snuff is abrasive (I have accidentally scratched spectacle lenses with it before) it doesn’t surprise me. Probably best just to keep it up your nose…
I’ll stick with my “Country Gent Tooth Powder”, thank you very much.
I’ve tried it with, IIRC, Super Cheetak. This snuff is so moist and coarse it is almost a paste. It is pitch black, but rinses out and it did a surprisingly good job as a dentifrice. It provided a pleasant sensation as well. Not something I’d make a habit of, but if Crest wasn’t available…
I gently brush using baking soda two to three times a year to remove coffee stains. I’m sure you could substitute snuff for the baking soda, but I would not substitute baking soda for snuff!
ill use indian blacks like this once in a while before i brush with toothpaste, teeth feel extra clean after. white elephant wasnt too bad either, but doesnt taste great. thats best used like an oral snuff/dip for me.

Snuff is mainly used as a dentifrice in India
So it’s used more as a dentifrice than actual nasal snuff? So is this why the supply and demand is so consistent in India? Do you know what the round about percentages are… % of population uses it as dentifrice and % of population that uses it as nasal snuff. Best guess?
it is hard to define in percentages but the use of snuff as a dentifrice is definitely much higher now.
When I was coming back from Nepal, I was carrying more than half a kilo of Indian snuff in my bag. When customs scanned it, they could see many tins of powder. Not surprisingly, they made me open my bag. As soon as the guy saw what it was, he made a gesture like rubbing your gum with your finger. His colleagues relaxed and nodded to each other, and they waved me through. So, cleaning teeth was the first thing he thought of.
