I am very new to snuffing. Now I am trying to find my own way and preferences through those myriads of kinds, brands and types. As I have mentioned here, I was really surprised how different are Wilson’s snuffs than those from Pöschl and Bernard. I still can’t understand them. Typically I use Best SP and sometimes Lime & Lemon trying to give them their time (or, better, to me) but it still lasts. In the case of German snuffs I can’t miss – full (and lasting!) aroma, strong character. Wilsons? Was it a snuff? Hey, where is the great revelation I have been expecting from reviews They are SO short in “taste”, effect and aroma. Whenever I use them I wish to take another pinch of some great Bernard. Is that normal? Do I need some time or is it simply a thing of my own nature which does not fit the nature of Wilson’s snuff? I am looking forward to Kralingse’s smokey leaders by the way! P. S. Important note for me – I am convinced it is something like alchemy or hermeticism where any species, animal, stone or plant (etc.) finds it’s own mirroring in other things!
Are you judging a snuff manufacturer with 80ish snuffs on just 2 of them? If you are, big mistake. Spend some money and buy at least 20 x 5g tins all different types. They’re cheap and will give you a better idea of what WoS have to offer (which is a lot, excellent company, some excellent snuffs). You just need to find your favourites and that’s part of the fun.
Oh, I didn’t want to say WoS is a bad company! It was just a suspicion I don’t understand to any British snuff But thanks for your recommendation, I’ll try it.
Also, if you like the smokey dark snuffs, check out the Samuel Gawith offerings. For best results buy the 25g tins as the 10g tap boxes have pretty much dried out before the user gets anywhere near them
In my opinion, and I’m not saying this because I’m a Brit, but British snuff is the best in the world. Out of 50+ bulk purchases I’ve made so far, all have been from British snuff companies.
Yes, I could agree but don’t know yet I will order according to your recs and let you know. Thanks

Reminds me of this quote from an anonymous source: " You don’t see things as they are. You see things as you are." As for which snuffs will please you I can only speak for myself, I like them all (except for a couple which shall remain unmentionable).
Thanks, nice add to my favourite quotes!
I’m only a few months into this and like many others, started out like yourself trying to work it out and really you can get hints here but ultimately you just have to get snuffs to try to know if you personally like them or not as people’s opinions and tastes can vary very widely. I started with Wos and have tried many of them and have since been buying a few other brands and still I’m finding I like a lot of the WOS stuff so I’m very glad I did start with them and certainly will continue to enjoy their snuffs and also explore new snuffs from other makers but I have found one of my own toast blends that I can very happily use without worrying to much about what else I have although I do feel it necessary out of curiosity to try a lot of the snuff that people mention on these forums and they are usually good recommendations trouble being that there are quite a lot to try so it takes some time since new snuffs need to be given a good try over at least a day or two to get a proper idea of how you like it or not.
I’m not going to pick sides…ok, what the hell, if i could only buy snuffs from one country, it would be England. Why? The massive range, history and i find most English snuff, the easiest to take all day long. But i do love all the other snuff available from other countries, so why limit yourself to one type. WoS is fantastic so please try some of their other offering that may be more to your tastes. Start with Gold label and Tom Buck.
Use what you like. I was not a fan of WoS when I first got them. It was years until I got anything enjoyment from them. I read the raving reviews and when I used it, I thought my sniffer was on vacation. after using snuff for a few 24 hrs the nose becomes educated ,It is set on automatic ,it knows how fast and what pressure to snuff most tobacco. So enjoy what you like now, Your taste in snuff will evolve. India Snuffs are two more different ball games, Like comparing rugby to american football they both use the same ball but it’s a different game
I was the same as @basement_shaman when I began snuffing, and liked WoS much less than Toque. There’s so much going on there it took a while to get used to them.
For me, WoS are my favourites overall so far. Obviously with such a huge range of styles and flavours, one can only generalise so far. The menthols are superb, perfect grind and moisture for me. Of those, SM Blue is just awesome - so balanced with plenty of eucalyptus and camphor, long-lasting and well rounded, easier to take than many strong menthols because of a lack of initial aggression, but then it just keeps coming and coming. I am so glad I took a tip on that one - definitely becoming one of my staples. Crumbs of comfort is also excellent.

Mine too, unless you count the large jars of American snuffs to be bulk. I do plan on bulking up on some de Kralingse in the future though, and I’d get about 10 Bernard’s if they were readily available in bulk.
i assume you are not UK based. which makes me wonder how long the snuffs took to get from mill to you- english dry/lose flavour a bit quicker since they are moistened differently. try some snuffs from samuel gawith, but avoid the tap-boxes. go for 25g (vacuum sealed tins). having said that, i didnt like my first wilsons snuff (thyme and lemon), but recently gave a few more ago. not so sure of the cherry menthol, but i love the queens extra strong/tom buck (same snuff, different names) and grand cairo is my current most used i think.
I really like a handful of WoS and F&T snuffs, but the ones I use are all coarser grinds. My biggest issue is the fine flour most WoS and Toque snuffs use. I don’t like that fine flour at all and it’s a deal breaker for me. Fortunately between SG, Bernard and South Africa there are plenty of snuffs that do not cause me discomfort in my rotation.
Me too, @Xander re Molens. After I’ve got all the SGs and WoSs/F&Ts I want, I’ll focus on molens and others from overseas. I wasn’t including my large sized Scotch cans in my bulk figures, but I’ve got a good few of those too. I also forgot I’ve got 250g of Grunt which isn’t British of course. Must also get some Indian snuff in bulk.
Your taste in snuffs will change over time. My best advice is to enjoy what you currently find to be enjoyable.
Stick to what you like. Who cares what country it comes from?
Once you try South African snuffs, your mind will be blown!
