Brand new to snus, need guidance

Been pipe smoking for a couple years, snuffing for a year. It’s time to get into snus. Where should I start? I like strong flake pipe tobacco, SPs, Toasts, and Indian snuffs (WE included). Don’t care much for fruity flavors. I’d welcome any suggestions. Thanks! Regards, Michael

you can’t go wrong with Ettan Original Portion

Ettan, loose or portions, Röda Lacket, Prima Fint, General, Oden’s Original, Oden’s No3 are all good places to start. Main thing with snus is try everything, if you don’t like it at first, out it in the freezer then come back to it as your tastes change.

@Skell18‌ has a good list. I would add Grov, and General Rustic Blend. I’m a closeted Roda fan.

Thanks for the list–that should keep my busy for a while. What’s the best source (I’m in the US)? SnusCentral.com looks like they have a good assortment.

I use SnusCentral almost exclusively. Buysnus once in a while for stuff SC doesn’t carry. I’ve gotten great service from both and never had an issue with an order. Make sure to check the sale page for deals.

Putting together an order. In the meantime, stopped at the local RYO store this afternoon and found a little 'fridge full of General snus. Bought Wintergreen, Peppermint and Plain (they were out of White) portions. Have some Wintergreen in right now and it’s not bad. Is a little burn to be expected when first starting out? I imagine so, just like snuff. About how long does a portion last nic-wise? I’m at about an hour and it still seems fine (of course, I’d been snuffing all day before putting it in).

@mecompco‌ yes, burn is normal, wait till you use the mint! Keep the portion in as long as you like, I usually keep them in for an hour up to two hours.

Thanks! I’m at an hour 45 now and no desire to smoke/snuff. I love snuff dearly, but where I work the use of tobacco is verboten by law so I need something really discreet and I think snus is the answer. Snuff has worked well, but sooner or later someone may notice the bullet.

General original portion, general, then as general grows on you, strong, extra strong… wonderful stuff. Roda lacket is good to learn to bake with. rl portion was my first snus, a little fruity, salt and sweet, very good. Dunno if olde viking is around anymore, but their ginger is really good. Probe whiskey is delicious too, very aromatic while keeping a decent tobacvo flavor in the loose, the pouches are very good too. If you want to build up to use snus, by that I mean get used to the nic, start with mocca, which has almost no nic, then catch, then some rl or skruf, they got the standard nic content, from there you can move onto anything. I personally found ettan, grov, gr etc too… boring for me, but Im a general-man. You may want to avoid the americanized “snus types”, theyre nothing short of pure trash. If you want snus, but also flavor, try pure nordic.

If the can doesn’t say made in Sweden or Denmark it’s not real snus. Generally. General Wintergreen is made purely for the American market.

Hmmm–the can says for sale only in the US. So it is “snus-like”, perhaps? I better get moving in my order for the real thing!

Well, the General Wintergreen can says manufactured in Sweden. So, “real” snus or a facsimile? Whichever, it tastes pretty good and seems to have a reasonable amount of nicotine.

General Wintergreen is “real” Swedish snus. The flavor profile was intended to attract American dip users. They did try a wintergreen snus in Sweden recently, but it wasn’t received well. I’ve talked to a few dippers who like wintergreen and they seem to like GW, but for them it lacks nicotine. Of course they are hard core dippers that can only get 4 pinches out of a tin. My impression is that Swedish snussers believe minty/overly fruity snus are for women, men use Ettan, General or Grov.

Here to help!! Open snus container, try it, hate it, throw it away, buy Copenhagen.

Funny that’s exactly what I did to Copenhagen, opened it, tried it, hated it, threw it away then bought snus.

No wonder we don’t get on well with one another :)) I don’t swallow anything but food and ale…
