body heat and snuff

On a hot day does snuff suffer. When I have carried snuff in my pocket during the summer I noticed a change in the taste. The first one was Gawith apricot . The menthol was just off. I can’t explain or say what the smell was but it was off. If I did not take that package with me in the heat it was deferent and better. I then noticed that my wilsons best dark was like furniture polish after 2 days in my pocket. After a few days It seemed to come back to normal. I would like to hear your experiences with hot snuff.

I think it has to do with as the snuff warms it releases more bouquet & all at once. Like when you hold a pinch between the finger for a little while till it warms. This helps to release the bouquet. So I think when you have a stronger scent coming from a larger amount like a whole tin, it just won’t taste the way your accustomed. But I usually hold a pinch in my fingers for a good 10 seconds before I snuff. Not all the time but more times than not. It does help the scent to come out better… I was out burning brush earlier and I had my silver box filled with toque blueberry. That silver box picked up a lot of heat from the fire and it really made for a beautiful snuff. Heat works great with the blueberry, as long as the box seals fairly well so it doesn’t dry out or let too much scent out as it heats. I suppose this same experience with a wood box wouldn’t go as well since the wood will also release scent as it warms.

I find this, in my limited experience, to be especially true with moist snuff.

I suppose it’s best to warm only a pinch at a time? I’d be concerned that warming a whole tin, as in placing it in an inside coat pocket, would dry it out more quickly. Is this likely?

All the artisan snuffs improve with a bit of warmth, just keep the snuffbox in your pocket or hold the pinch for 10 seconds or so.
