Good Day Everyone, New to the forums, enjoy dry American snuffs. Which snuffs give the best nic hit? Thanks Everyone!
Usually I don’t feel a “nic hit” that I am aware of with snuffs, but Ithink the strongest snuff I have had is this snuff I picked up at an Indian grocery called T.A.S. Madras Snuff. As a snuff it’s not all that in terms of flavor, it’s just a fine grind plain natural tobacco, and I really don’t detect anything else. Sorta reminds me of Toque Natural. But after a couple of sniffs of this, I feel like I just put a wad of Copenhagen in my mouth. Well, not that bad, as such oral tobaccos usually made me feel sick, but I seriously feel a slighter version than that, when I snuff this. It’s not a snuff I’d buy again, as I prefer a flavor of some type, but I believe I definately got a “nic hit”.
These deliver: Three Thistle Strong De Voe Sweet Rooster These help me battle the urge I still occasionally have for a cigarette!!
Toque Quit Bespoke Gin & Tonic and I hear that the new Dholakia Black is a heavy hitter…can’t wait to get my sample!
How about this one- De Kralingse Latakia AO 1860 This is strong with a pipe tobacco like smell to it.
I’m getting a whole new nic experience since I’ve been sniffing off the back of my thumbnail more and using the bullets less. I’m kind of re-trying everything but I would still go with 3 thistles strong.
Mark, I’ve tried the thumbnail for the first time today and it works pretty well. It enables me to sniff up all the snuff as against taking it from my “snuff cavity” or back of hand which usually leaves a bit which I can’t reach.
Tin Can Man, welcome to THE forum!! All of the American scotches I’ve tried so far, gives a good kick. Three Thistles and WE Garrett are 2 of my favourites when it comes to nicotine contents. Have you checked Snuff Reviews.com? If not, do so. There you will find comments from the experts which will give you the best indication of what you can expect.
I’m sure pinching is still best, I just haven’t mastered it yet, not that I’ve really tried. The thumbnail method with the bullet as a dispenser still works better for me if i’m walking a dog. At least if the dog suddenly pulls on the leash, I may drop a small bump, not spill the whole tin. When I’m driving bullet is still the easiest, to me.
Pieter- I thought Bruton was much stronger than WE Garrett.
Rooster and FUBAR Grunt deffinately have bite to them. FUBAR has become a daily for me due to the nice nic bump and the strange coconut chaser flavor I get.
I agree with the Grunt, that odd burnt cigar-coconut combination has really grown on me as well and it is in my daily rotation now.
tom, Bruton tastes stronger than any of the other Americans to me but I get more of a buzz from WE Garrett.
I really like the Grunt as well. I like all the Fubars, I think it’s one of the best lines of Dholakia mades, they all are very good.
Toque Quit without a shadow of a doubt. Stefan
Toque Quit is strong . I feel a good nick kick in coarse snuffs like Kendal Browns from Gawith Hoggath or Samuel Gawith .
Many thanks everyone for all the great replies! I’ll give some of the above mentioned brands a go. I Chewed Copenhagen for many, many years and have recently switched to sniffing snuffs. Problem is, I need a good nic hit. It’s a bit of a challenge to stop what I’m doing every 5 minutes to put a 1/2 gram of snuff up my nose. People are like:…“What’s this guy up to?”
The hit is never as intense as a smoke or dip, even with the so called high nicotine snuffs. The biggest overall blast seems to come from Indian snuff - Dholakia Kamal for example - but that is also made up of the burn that comes with the grind. Still, I find the plain snuffs the most satisfying; Wilsons best SP, Toque Quit, original and Natural to name a few.
From what I have heard, the new Dholakia Black and White snuffs are like rocket fuel. You might want to check them out. On the US Snuff side, I would say that any US Smokeless snuff (Bruton, Carhart’s, Red Seal, Rooster, Standard, De Voe) would be a good choice.
As a 30 year Cope user I actually was able to quit for good using a combination of Tom Buck and Grunt. Now I will admit I am a frequent snuffer but luckily I get the TB in the 1lb jug. Now if they would only sell the grunt in 1lb I would be set!!!
well done shooter! I love TB and grunt, TB is a great classic in my book. with regards to the Indian snuffs, im not sure that the nic is any higher, there just seems to be something about the way its ground up, or maybe flavoured - that produces the intense burn when you take it?
Grind has somehting to do with delivery, since we increase surface area with a finer grind, so you get more nicotine at once, however, it will not last as long. I found the Dholakia Black not to be particuarly fine, but it seems to have a higher nicotine concentration. I got a “buzz” instead of a “blast” from it. However, the second time I tried it the buzz was less intense. Don’t worry about that one now, anyway since its only avaialable by sample at this time. If you’re looking for something to take the place of dip, you’d almost have to go with something like that rather than one of the fine grinds. Quit With Snuff’s Smoker’s Blend seems to be pretty potent. It was one of the ones I started with. Also Toque Quit is potent since it has a high nicotine factor, but it is medium grind. Also when I was starting out I got little buzzes from Fribourg and Treyer Princes Special as its fairly course and “holds” you for awhile. All in all, quiting Cope will come down to your own determination. Mix it up a bit at first and maybe throw some Swedish Snus in there too as they curb my cravings well. You may gradually be able to eliminate it. I quit years ago, but only because I couldn’t get any, plus I also smoked so I managed to keep the nicotine craving part of it away. Now, without actually intending to, I have more or less eliminated cigarettes. Since beginning snuff, I have smoked less and less and less, all to my suprise really. I don’t know if I’m better off, since I picked up snus and pipe smoking in the same time. I smoke maybe one to three a week now and maybe the pipe three times a week too, so a lot less than a full time smoker. I think the best attribute of snuff that helped me was the “which one should I try next?” nature of it. With so many to choose from and they are all different from each other there’s hardly time for anything else!
I meant to mention Taxi Red and Blue in there too. They will sustain you. (Although you may say, after trying them, “Why don’t I just sniff the Copenhagen?”)
I’ve searched for a truly high nicotine snuff for years and never found one that really fits the bill, you know; gives you the hit that a deep pull in flavour country gives you. Leaving aside atomising the stuff to increase surface area - which from my experience with the Indian types just seems to burn your nose off - I don’t think there is one out there. Sure, there are strong snuffs, some are really potent…but not potent enough if you are looking to replicate a lip full of Cope or a pull on a Marlboro. Not being an expert on the chemistry of tobacco, I wonder if there is a limit to what you can get in a snuff; the same way as wine can only get to a certain strength before the alcohol kills the yeast? I would be interested if any of the producers could answer that. But in terms of replacing other forms of tobacco with snuff; its just a process of getting used to it. To paraphrase Professor Griffiths, only take a pinch when you want to indulge in your usual form - at some point the craving will have switched from one for your usual type to snuff. This approach really works but takes some perseverance.
I’ll say…why DON"T you just snuff Copenhagen? It’s nice and stong and has the taste you like.
Actually, Cope might make a pretty good snuff, dried and ground up a touch.
McChrystals snuffs I find to have a good nic kick, try their S’nuff or O&G.
The new Dholakias (Black and White) KICK and keep on kicking…
Debbie, my experience is that the Black tastes milder but delivers a bigger nic kick. What do you think?
I don’t recommend Cope nasally. It will rip you a new one. For a good nic hit I like Bespoke produces or grunt is good too. The one that surprised me is Toque Toffee. It always gives me a nice buzz. I know it is suppose to be the same nic content as the others but it may have some sugar or somthing that helps it along.
Jarhog, I get the same nice kick out of Toffee. This is my second tin and I have a notion that this snuff gives a better buzz than that from my first tin. Maybe Roderick blended in some Quit!!!
Pieter, The kick I get with Toffee is different than say Roster. It is mellower and shall say sweet.
good idea, Ill take some Toffe now
@ Pieter: Yes, I’d agree with you there. The black has a longer lasting and repeated nic Kick. The white is ‘rougher’ and has an instant kick (at least for me), but fades quicker.
Spanish Jewel
The chemistry is one thing but the mind of the smoke based nic addict is another. There simply is no way of replicating a pull on a cigarette or a dip when that experience is the one you crave. It does take some perseverance but as a two pack a day Marlboro smoker I can guarentee that with that determination AND snuff the addiction can be turned around. The prof on the other site (all about snuff??) explains it very well, when you want that dip or smoke - but ONLY then - take a pinch. I had been dabbling with snuff for years but just in the same way a smoker will have the occasional cigar, when I applied that system it took me a couple of weeks to switch over, and stay switched. Its almost like its the hidden mystery of nicotine or something, but it really does work.
I’m pretty sure now about the decent nicotine charge from Toffee. Two fair sized pinches gives quite a nice blast. I’m going to order at least a 100g bag of this. I’ve never been a big Toffee fan because I find it a bit cloying. But so what, I will just have to blow more often. I’ve ordered some paisley hankies from Tom for that purpose!
I think the ingredients and mill add to the nic hit as much as anything, the issue is not so much the raw nicotine in the product as the delivery method. Increasing the surface area by fine grinding and various additives will produce an apparently higher nicotine snuff, but really its just more efficient in transferring the nicotine accross the mucosa. Mind you, as long as the hit is there who cares?
Do you really want to be hammered with nicotine?? Try some NTSU. It will make you go dizzy and you will feel the nicotine rushing through your whole body. I’ve made a small cocktail of NTSU, Dholakia White and Quit…skull splitting strong. makes me squint.
My home ground Bugler gives a pretty impressive nic hit! Not sure why, maybe it’s the slightly coarser grind…but, …It ranks right up there…Whoweee! …Nice licorice flavor, too.
Pieter, you should throw a bit of clove in that mix for an even better hit. If that makes you squint, adding clove might make you cry
leman, I’m going to do that right away!!! Will let you know soon what the effect was like. That is, if I live to tell you!!
OK, I have it mixed here: Dholakia White, McC Clove, Quit and NTSU. I’ve got a Stuyvesant snus in my lip, just for the balance!! Here goes…oh my goodness, all the lights in the house dimmed for a moment. I thought it was another power failure but they are all back to normal again. I will try again…yes, same result!!! No squinting this time, only loosing a bit of sight. It’s like a real blow from a hammer but does not last very long. Oh shit, I have snuff all over the show, will have to clean up first. Talk to you later,
