When it comes to tobacco, I’m a bit of an Anglophile, a prejudice from when my pipes were my favoured method of ingestion. But since I like fine, dry, unscented snuffs, I’m beginning to think I should try an American Scotch, something unscented. So, what’s the classic, acclaimed, best-in-class, if-you-only-try-one snuff in this class? The American answer to HDT? Mind you, it doesn’t have to resemble HDT. I’ve heard the Scotches have a “smokiness”, whatever exactly that means, that HDT doesn’t have. I’m happy to embrace that, if that’s what a classic scotch is. But nothing sweet and scented, please.
erm… id say swisher superior. square as my next choice.
I’d say Square or Three Thistles Strong
Square
Starr by Swisher International
American W.E. Garrett & Sons or American Dental Scotch Snuff. Smoky… try and you will know what it means. More like HDTs answer to American.

W.E. Garrett is a classic, especially good if you have a tin of new old stock that has been cellared for a few years. Dental, while good and a personal favorite in both its mild and sweet forms, is not necessarily one of the best examples of smoky American Scotches. I would say get 2 or 3… probably Garrett, Starr, and Square. While initial impressions may not convey much difference between them, spend a little time with each. You’ll discover the unique characteristics of each and find your champion!
@Jakartaboy, If you want smoky goodness in a dry American snuff try Lorrilard. We all have our favorites of course and no one is ‘the Ultimate’ in my mind, but Lorrilard certainly fits the ‘smokey’ bill nicely. And, it is very pleasant to boot.
Smokey = Rooster
Try a Rooster Booster +1! Three Thistles, hell, collect them all, I do!
Thanks for all the input! I’ll look through the MS offerings and order at least one tin of something next time I have a vacant slot in my basket.
