Bernards Snuff Bottles

I can’t remember whether this has been mentioned on the forum yet; Bernards sell beautiful snuff bottles of various sizes as well as snuff hankies. Check www.schmalzlerfranzl.de

I’ve always wanted to order from them. I’ve been waiting for someone else to go first, and report back.

I tried to order from them last year, they would not ship to the US.

they are nice but I don’t find them very functional to use everyday.

I have one that I bought off ebay. It sits nice on the shelf, but I wouldn’t use it.

They won’t ship to US? What a shame! I was looking the other day…

Snuffing off the back of the hand is an art. Pouring from a beautiful bottle only adds to the experience. There are snuffs you would never think of taking off the back of your hand like toasts and scotches that will give you an entirely new perspective when taken that way. I have a couple dozen bottles of different types mostly from China. Very inexpensive from E-bay, Of course there were a few that are dysfunctional but they still look good on display. Some can be worn conveniently around the neck others slip easily into a pocket. The Bernards bottles I don’t have but if I did they would be a perfect compliment for snuff. I can see myself showing up to a house party with a bottle in a nice silk bag. Oh, the joys of snuff.

I have several of their bottles sitting at home (purchased on ebay)~ Added some other snuff into the bottles a year ago, they are still very fresh this morning when I took them~ Aside from pouring out the snuff, one can always use a snuff spoon to scoop some out~ The site also has a snuff box for sale, is it wood or plastic?Click Me!

Do these bottles come filled with snuff?

I doubt they contain snuff. Some of the Bernard’s gift sets come with a packet of snuff you can fill them with, and a handkerchief. Maybe when our friendly US retailers get settled they can look into stocking the bottles and the gift sets. (hint, hint)

@ itsuke: that little tan color box is plastic. I’ve seen those before.

Hey all. I bought some schmalzler bottles off the eBay recently, and thought I’d show off. Not Bernard’s but Pöschl. I was mostly interested of the bakelite box but I think the bottles are pretty nifty, too. All were in good shape and filled with (stale) schmalzler. The largest bottle is about 13 cm high (sans the stopper).

Mr. Snuff has the Bernard’s flasks for sale, and I imagine they’d be pretty fresh. I ordered some zwiebacher for my upcoming hilltop dancing date with a Swiss dairymaid.

@ Mike B.: Flasks are sold empty! Some gift sets include a packet of snuff on the side. I picked up two recently. A porcelein one and a stone one. @ Jari T. : Good haul! Snuffstore.de sells replacement stoppers.

Thanks, Xander. That’s good to know.

@Xander: I had no idea the flasks were empty–I thought 8g meant 8 grams of tobacco, not “this flask is capable of holding 8 grams of tobacco were you so inclined to fill it with tobacco”. that’s disappointing.

Nice bottles! Reasonably old too, with the location being given as Landshut rather than Geisenhausen.

Thanks, Tony. Do you know when the move to Geisenhausen took place? It’s always nice to know a bit more about these things.

I’m not sure I’m afraid. When I lived in Regensburg in the 70s I’m sure Pöschl were still in Landshut as I have a bottle I bought then with that place name on it. But exactly when the move happened I don’t know. Redstar will probably know more.
