Bernard vs. Poschl Schmalzers

I am planning on placing an order pretty soon to replenish my depleting schmalzer stash. I have only tried Echt Fresko and a bunch of Bernard’s offerings including Doppelt-Fermentiert, Feinst, Rasimburger, etc. I like the fact that the few Poschl Schmalzers come in bulk, but was wondering how they compare as far as flavor? I was looking at Perlerueter and Doppelaroma. Will these be similar to the bernard schmalzers I love?

Similar but not the same. The Doppelaroma is quite fruity, the Perlesreuter plainer, as is the Schmalzler A which I like better than the D.

Sudfrucht is the best IMHO. 100 grams last about the same as a 25g tin of other stuff because you use 4 times as much. Got some in right now in fact.

They are all good,Make sure you store them in the cooler in air tight jars. They will stay fresh as the day you open them

@basement_shaman do you mean just placing mason jars in the refrigerator? I have stored Echt Fresko at room temp for a few months and it is still the same as the day I bought it. Why place these in the fridge?

I don’t know the science on it.but I think there is raw material that can mutate if exposed to warm conditions, some De Kralingse snuff should be treated with the same storage courtesy.

and what harm could it cause?

Brasil is a great schmalzler for the price

Well, I finally got to try a Poschl Schmalzer thanks to a trade with another member. It is the Perlesrueter (sp). I have to say that I do not think it compares with Bernard’s favorable. It is good, but if this was the first schmalzer I tried, I don’t think i would be as hooked as I am. I find that the Poschl feels almost synthetic compared to Bernard’s. It is kind of crunchy as opposed to the Bernard’s moist fluffiness. Going into the nose, there is zero burn to speak of which is for me, not a positive. I will say that there is no drip and no nose running with the Poschl as opposed to Bernard’s which you have to be prepared for. Overall, I like it a lot and I am going to continue to use it. I find it easy to take, low key and an “all day” sort of Schmalzer. I really want to try the Sudfrucht (sp) to see how that is. If anyone has some to trade, see my post in the marketplace for my end. It’s a shame that Bernard’s don’t come in bulk. boo!

Sternecker is awesome. Very hand crafted vibe.

Oils used in Schmalzers can oxidize over time, I recommend the same storage techniques. I like both Poschl and Bernard, I highly suggest trying Poschl Sudfrucht and Bernard Frohes Fest.

I like pearslreuter as it is plainer. Fruitiness I’m not too keen on.

Both companies have an excellent product but my nod goes to Bernard for this type snuff. I think the wide variety of Bernard gives them the edge IMO and Schmaltzers are one type snuff that I don’t really mind in the tap box. I just keep them bagged up when not in use and they stay fresh.

The thing I like about the Bernard Schmalzers is the slight burn. I don’t get it at all with the Poschl and for some reason, it bothers me. The flavor is good enough with the Poschl, but it is missing that kick.
