Bernard Jubilaums Snuff- is it a schmaltzer?

I’ve been snuffing this one a bit lately, and wondered if it was made with the schmaltzer method- it’s quite sticky and course, and many of the sweet background aromas are very much like a schmaltzer- fruity and chocolatey tobacco scents. It’s got a fair whack of menthol going on though, which isn’t traditional for schmaltzer, but perhaps the makers got a bit inventive? I do enjoy this, in huge portions off my thumbnail, but I find it burns something horrible if it hits the back of the throat, which it does quite easily despite the moisture, as it sticks together in big clumps which are easy to overinhale.

Try not to get it to hit the back of your throat! Sounds like my Bernard’s Brasil Feinst which is a schmalzer.

This is one I have yet to try, but it could be a halb-schmalzler; which is to say, a snuff-schmazler hybrid. The menthol would be in the snuff portion. The classic example is Zwiefacher, which has all the sweet and sticky characteristics of schmazler, but yet has a fluffy medicated componet, like many German snuffs. Bernard makes several halb-schmalzers.

Yes, it’s a Halb-Schmalzler.

Ah, thanks for the explanation. Any suggestions on how to keep it from flying right the way to the back of my throat and forming a post-nasal napalm drip? Most of the time it is lovely, but now and then this happens, and it’s very off-putting.

Blow it out before it gets drippy. Just try to keep it at the forward end of the nose. This happens to me sometimes too.

Yeah. I think that’s probably the best idea. Always seems a shame to be using the hankie so soon after taking a pinch though. So what about the Amostrinha snuff? Is that a pure snuff, or is it sticky too? Description says menthol and camphor, is it just like an English medicated snuff, or is it a different take on the theme?

Ah, well, that’s a whole different snuff. I do have that one. Its quite nice, too, as I’m fond of camphor. However, its distincly in the German style (even though Germans call mentholated snuffs English style). Most German snuffs are moist, oil based and medium-course. English snuffs are all water based, and generally finer ground. Amosthrina very medicinal tasting though. Strong camphor, moderate menthol, perhaps some other herbal elements. Good rich tobacco flavor too, which Bernard is remarkable for, but its not a halb-schmalzler, and does not have a strong sweetness. Polar Prise is similar, but more of a eucalyptus than camphor.

Amostrinha is to throat drip what Dholakia White is to over-inhalation. After you mess it up the first time you’re frightened into improving your technique.
