Ok so is this one a (relatively speaking) very finely ground schmalzler, or is it a snuff with a schmalzler flavor profile? The latter sounds heavenly to me.

J

Bernard’s web-site suggests that it’s neither. Google translate gives me

“Civette extra fine - in a square glass bottle to a recipe dating from 1915; pure tobacco flavor, mildly tuned, extremely fine-grained”

They don’t list it as a schmalzer, and ‘civette’ is the French for musk. Mind you, an expert will be along in a minute

J

It’s a schmalzler by my definition; an oiled German snuff. It is not fruity at all but has a spicy smokiness to it. The fine grind is wonderful, it makes me feel like regrinding some of my other schmalzlers. According to this http://service.ble.de/tabakerzeugnisse/index2.php?detail\\_id=101341&site\\_key=153&stichw\\_suche=extrafein&zeilenzahl\\_zaehler=1

the only ingredients in it are tobacco, oil, and sodium chloride.

I don’t call it a schmalzler, but I’d prefer to hear a German’s opinion.  My tranlation of Civette was “chives” and it seems to have a whif of that herb, but  could be wrong.  I’d like to hear a Frenchman’s opinion on that maybe @gandalf.

Its not really fine ground by comparison to english snuffs.

However, it is excellent!  I wish Bernard would put it back in the glass bottles where it belongs!

G

This is It Xander, chives… anal glands to be accurate.

J

So there you are - such a versatile word. Which one is in the snuff…?

X

Hmm, No I don’t think we call that animal a “Chive” in english. I think its a Civet, so Civette is close enough. guess the translator was working overtime. Civet cat musk is used in perfumery, so yeah, it could be in snuff.

G

I’ve made an error of translation @Xander,chives is a plant witch ave the same name than civet in french.

sorry.

X

So is the snuff the animal or the plant?

G

The animal, civet,as you said it’s a famous perfume ingredient( I have never seen anal glands on flowers yet :)      .

P

Dear lord, no wonder i thought my highschool english teacher smelled of cat pee.

H

…snuffing anal glands…well, they make good coffee, so I hear, so yeah…snuff too maybe…just seems a bit odd…

P

I would say that it is not a Schmalzer. It is not fluffy at all, the nose feel is whole different and the flavours in this are not seen in any Schmalzer nor are there any Schmalzer with a slight reference to Chivet.

I see often the misconception that all more german fluffy snuffs are Schmalzers what is wrong for sure.

S

Anal glands, huh? Is this for real? No wonder I don’t like the stuff.

F

I think that Civette is a Paris type snuff.

M

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civet

also used to make the worlds most expensive coffee as mentioned by Jack Nicholson’s Caritor in the Bucket list.

M

There’s a local shop that sells it by the cup, also maybe in bulk. Expensive and I’ve heard a mild taste. Who’s feeling that adventurous? Not me.

B

I’d try it.

H

you can buy it from ThinkGeek, actually. If I remember right it’s about $35 for about 6 cups worth of coffee beans. It’s name: Civet Crap Coffee.

M

Ooooh, tantalizing! Cat gut Arabica… Idk I might rather eat a grasshopper.

H

Candy coated grassh hoppers are actually delicious.

N

Survivorman seemed to enjoy eating grasshoppers, they can’t be that bad.

B

do you eat lobster? do you eat crab? do you eat shrimp, they’re all pretty much big insect like creatures. So by stretching logic terribly grasshoper must be taste.

N

Yeah they’re all arthropods, exoskeleton having deliciousness.

M

Well, not meaning to offend people, just thinking of bugs in general, the grasshopper seemed like the best candidate. I know that some people eat grubs, ants etc I know. But the point was that if I had to eat something considered unusual in this part of the world, and things being relative to me, I’d prefer somehting not passed through an animals intestinal tract…or cheese with maggots or what not… I don’t hate people who do/would…to answer the question I do eat shrimp, though it’s less appetizing when I think about what it is. Also I get that it’s wierd in a way to consume the eggs or milk of another species, which I sometimes want to quit myself. Sometimes I consider going vegetarian/vegan again. Now the whole agricultural industry will be angry with me…
