Beginners snuff?

M

Hi everyone, Like many tobacco users, I’m a pretty heavy smoker (Pack a day) and I’m starting to be disgusted by my own habit. I’ve tried American smokeless tobacco (Skoal & Copenhagen) but it’s even more disgusting than smoking due to the fact that I have to spit the excess juices. I’ve also tried the pharmaceutical option (gum and patches) but they just have zero enjoyment factor. Thus bringing me to this point… I’m looking for an alternative to these and I’m considering nasal snuff but I have no idea what brand, flavor, or type I might enjoy. I’ve heard that fribourgh & treyer is a great brand but looking at the flavors I’m unsure of what they would actually “taste” like. Could anybody suggest a good brand & flavor to start out with?

S

A good place to start are the Poschl/Ozona brands. Moist and with a more coarse ground to them that makes them easier to take. Fribourgh and Treyer art more of an advanced snuff. The Quit With Snuff and Toque brands could also be a good place to start.

L

I started out with Poschl Ozona President and McChrystals Original and Genuine. Both are somewhat mentholated, and the first is about the most user friendly snuff out there, due to it’s moistness, fairly coarse grind, and easy dispenser. I still use it often. The thing that hooked me was, the first time I used the Poschl President I was amazed that I had no desire to use snus, which is what I was using to quit smoking. Many beginners find Toque to be incredibly attractive, and there are loads of different flavors, all of them extremely clean and natural, with good to pretty high nicotine content. Their “Quit” can be mixed with their other flavored blends to give quite a nicotine kick. The combination of snuff for pleasure (some are incredibly high in nicotine, but they aren’t very beginner friendly) and snus to feed your nicotine jones (which doesn’t require spitting in most cases, and is much “cleaner” than American dip) have enable many heavy smokers, including me, to quit.

N

For a beginner, I would recommend Samuel Gawith Menthol, Samuel Gawith Irish D Light and Gawith Hoggarth Dry Orange. This will give you three examples of different classes of easy to take snuffs.

J

I agree with the Poschl/Ozona suggestion. They are very easy to take. Also, lately I have been using Wilsons of Sharrow’s ‘Burgundy’. It’s quite dry but due to the coarseness I imagine it would make a fairly good beginer’s snuff. Though I don’t find the nicotine content to be very high so it may not be an optimal choice to help quit smoking.

S

Honestly, I hear all the time about what’s a good beginner’s snuff and what not. Really, you just have to get in there, in my opinion, and get your feet wet. I can name several that would be good for beginners, but it also boils down to what you might like.

M

Thanks for your advice everybody! I have tried the snus before, but I’ve only tried the new camel snus that available in the american market. And from what I’ve heard from other people who’ve used snus, the american version is not at all what true swedish snus is (I thought it tasted like a weak and overly sugared version of tobacco, like somebody tried to make a tobacco flavored Kool-Aid or something). I have seen Toque’s website and their selection of flavors is quite impressive, but I find the idea of a Bacon & Cheese flavored tobacco to be… uhhh… questionable at best. The Poschl brands seem good and I have to say that the Ozona President packaging looks “pimp” for lack of a better word. Again, thanks everybody!

K

I second the Toque recommendation. The 10 for 9 deal is the way to go. Just avoid the Cheese & Bacon. I do. (And so does the Toque proprietor!) Choose the flavors that sound appealing to you.

M

Has anyone here tried the Toque bullets? They seem like a nice clean way to go

S

My only complaint with bullets is that you have to sniff kinda hard to get it all out of the hole in top, and you get it more in your sinuses than in the front of the nose where it should be. Bullets are a good way to go if you can’t use some other technique.

M

Is that just with the Toque bullets or do all the bullets available have the same problem?

S

I’ve only used 2 different kinds of bullets, but they were both pretty much the same, one was plastic(Quit With Snuff brand) like the Toque bullets, and the other was a metal one.

K

Bullets are good in theory. It’s a shame that no one has ever manufactured one that actually works as it should. Give it a try – Toque bullets are cheap and reusable, but I think you’ll find that nothing beats the pinch.

B

whatever works. Man I avoided toasts for a long time because they are advanced snuffs. And well never had a problem with them really. My suggestion is try the widest variety of snuff types (grind and moisture mostly and scent types [florals, medicate, fruit, svaory etc.]) see how they work for you and which ones agree the most with you. also experiment with diffrent techniques.

K

There are no “beginner” or “advanced” snuffs. Don’t get hung up on that. This is an unfortunate myth that is inadvertently perpetuated here all too often. Other than the German snuffs I sampled when offered to me way back when, the snuff that I started out with was Garrett Sweet and Mild. It took a bit of trial and error to get the snuffing technique right, but I mastered it within an hour. It was a lot easier to handle than that first cigarette.

K

I started on the Garrett sweet too. Scared me at first but is now a “staple” snuff for me.

N

I quit a 40+ year smoking habit with snus (not Camel Snooz) 1 1/2 yrs ago and don’t miss it at all. Others have, but I don’t know if I’d been able to do it with snuff alone. If you have dificulties don’t be afraid to try real snus. Snuff and snus can coexist quite nicely together.

B

I recommend Toque for you simply because the scents are true to the name on the tin. Unlike say F&T or some Wilson’s products. Snuffreviews and the reviews on most of the web stores have pretty good descriptions of flavors so you shouldn’t be surprised. Half the fun of snuff is finding out what you like. Just remember there are differences in scents of snuff of the same names from different companies. F&T Morlaix is totally different from Wilson’s Morlaix.

J

I agree with kjoerup that there are no beginner or advanced snuffs, but I did begin with Garrett Scotch and uh…whooooeeee. I love it now but the first few times I was sitting there with watering eyes going, “My God what have I gotten myself into?” Speaking strictly from my own experience, the Poschl/Ozona line is what got me into snuffing as a habit, but they didn’t have the nicotine “oomph” I needed to get over cigarettes; snus and stronger snuffs did that for me. But they’re still terrific snuffs and you can’t beat a long toot of Gletsher Prise while standing out in the snow!

Z

I echo the “try what sounds good” apart from maybe Dholakia White. We could lose you with that one.

T

My 1st proper snuff, which got me into snuff was Jaxons Cherry Menthol. I thought it was great. I might get it again, as I traded it a while back. But another good beginner pack, I think, is the Rockit snuffs, all 3 I think were very good. And for non-menthols, I think the WOW!, Blast, and Temptation brands are easy and good, and of course Dholakia Swiss Chocolate. I recommend these based on agreeable scent, and easy to snuff grinds.

M

I’ve been checking out the Toque site and I have to say, they’ve got some very interesting flavors (personally I’m really swayed by the Coke and Pommegranite flavors). I’m curious as to what the “white” snuffs consist of though. Are these actually tobacco or something else? And it seems like a white snuff is a great way to attract a whole lot of unwanted attention from law enforcement… “No, officer it’s not what you think it is. Would you like to try some?”

U

EDIT > @mryan09 It’s only Toque COKE officer, honest

X

White snuffs (except Dholakia White) are non tobacco. They are made with sugar and menthol.

M

Well, I went ahead and ordered 5 10g tins of toque directly from their site ($11 for 5 cans - very impressive). Hoping to get to try it out soon. Has anybody here ordered from toque? If so, about how long did it take to get your order?

C

mryan09, my orders from Toque take 6-10 days to get to Kansas.

M

Well I’m in Oklahoma so I’ll look forward to snuffing on Monday. Thanks everybody!

L

If you are in Oklahoma I would recommend buying from “Two Day Tom” at NicotineRush.com. He ships from Florida, I live in Minnesota, and I get my order usually in 2 business days, sometimes 3. Tom stocks all of the Toque varieties as well as something like over 700 snuffs and accessories. As a new snuffer, make sure to include McChrystal’s Original & Genuine in your next order. I am not a daily mentholated snuff taker, but I would probably panic if I ran out of O&G. It was one of my first loves in the world of snuff. Actually, put the McChrystal’s sampler pack in your next order. They were all easy to master and that particular sampler was my first introduction to snuff. Because of the variety, I was able to rule out certain types like the florals as ones that I did not want to pursue. Don’t stress about what snuffs to buy. Like others have mentioned, part of the journey, fun, and obsession with snuff is building your collection as you discover your mainstays. Just remember, you are spending considerably less on tobacco than you are with cigarettes no matter how much snuff you buy. Also, there is an article that you can find with the search feature that points out that snuffing for the rest of your life is safer than smoking cigarettes for one more month. Don’t beat yourself up about the occasional slip-up with cigs. Focus instead on how much less you are smoking than you were before and how that is extending your life.

M

Well, I already put in my order but I’ll definitely be checking out nicotinerush.com for my next order. I figure if I like snuffing, I’d like to try out some of the Poschl brands. Does anybody know if the dispenser that the Ozona President snuff comes in is refillable? I have to say I really like the look of it

X

They can be refilled, but you have to pry them open. You can’t buy President in bulk as far as I know, so you’d have to fill it with something else. For a newbie, I’d recommend getting one or two snuffs from all the major companies. That way you can guide yourself more specifically on your second order.

A

The next step is how to take it. There are several threads dealing with that so use the search facility and you will find a good deal of tips. My advice is just to go straight ahead with the pinch. Just a pea sized amount between thumb and forefinger, breathe it in quickly with enough force to take half of the amount in one nostril and repeat for the other. It really is simple and a very big deal is often made about it for some reason. ‘Beginner’ and ‘advanced’ have started to be used as descriptions for mild and strong snuffs. Some are certainly more challenging (mostly due to the grind) to someone who has never snuffed before, although, as one member indicated, this is not universally agreed upon. Also, have a look at Professor Phillips Grifith’s site which gives some good tips on making the switch to snuff. In a way I envy you the pleasure of discovering the world of snuff!

S

I would dispute that the ‘beginner’ and ‘advanced’ appellations refer to strength alone. I think that they refer to general ease of snuffing due to grind, moisture, etc. It just happens to be the case that many ‘advanced’ snuffs also happen to have a higher nicotine content.

D

Bernards Zwiefacher Schmalzler is flavoursome and course and does not burn the nostrills.
