Beginners Advice

O

Okay, i am new to all this Nasal Tobaccos, and I would like some help on what i should begin with? Any tip tricks ect .I am in the USA looking for an online store ( In The USA ), cause my town doesnt have any nasal tobaccos. Heard of Mr.Snuff dot com and heard great things about them. When i used to smoke in my younger days I didmt like menthol cig`s and I damn sure i will NOT like menthol nasal tobaccos either…LOL I am sure i will / might like the berries, nuts, fruits, vanillas, whiskeys, cloves. So any suggestions for a NEWBIE? Thank you for your help in advance. OzzyOzz

T

You will receive many recommendations I’m sure and I also know that many people in the USA order regularly from Mr Snuff. In terms of what to try first, I would say a medium grind medium moisture snuff, with no added flavour beyond what the blender puts in it. There will be people along recommending all sorts of things but a good one to start with might be Viking Blond. I’ve got a slightly weird relationship with Viking blond, in that I didn’t like the smell when I first opened the tin, but I think that was because of some residual buildup of aromas in the tin and once they dispersed I really liked it. It’s incredibly easy to take, the last thing you want for your first snuffing experience is something that is so fine it hits the back of your throat, or that it is so moist or coarse that it makes your nose run like hell or falls out of your nose completely!

M

You will not be able to find an online store in the US, our benevolent overlords have made it illegal to sell snuff or cigarettes by mail within the country. So it’s pretty much mistersnuff or Toque for us. I’d probably lean toward the Toque line to start, shipping is reasonable, good quality, perhaps the 10-for-the-price-of-9 10g. sampler. Have at it.

H

Be sure to have Toque Spanish Gem in the sampler if you decide to go for that. It`s the one that got me started and still is one of my favourite Toque snuffs.

J

I would second @Mouse here. The man behind Toque - @Roderick - is a member of this forum. I would suggest that you go for the 9 for 10 offer as Mouse recommended, but if you get in touch with him first I am sure he would be happy to put together a beginner-friendly selection for you. Good luck, and let us know how you get on!

S

I agree with the above. You should also check out some of the samplers that are available on Mr. Snuff. A great way to check out a variety of manufacturers, styles and flavors at a bit of a discount. Good luck and hope you enjoy your journeys!!!

O

Thank you all for your great advice for a beginner !! I knew about not selling cigs online in the US, but I didnt know snuff was in the same boat. Now I know!! So Mr.Snuff is the way to go.Keep the advice coming I will read them all and let you know what I choose and tell you how I like it. Thanks again. OzzyOzz

I

As a non menthol (I think menthol cigarettes taste like synthetic crap) smoker I want to say I really like menthol snuff. It’s entirely different from menthol cigarettes. Has a really good nasal clearing effect.

S

Great advice above. I had to learn off bone dry American scotches… while difficult at first, it makes everything else seem easy cheesy!

I

Most people I have met that know about snuff tried it once with their grandfather and, it was the Scotches. They wont even try my semi moist snuff for fear of the burn and, sneezing the Scotch caused.

H

My big tip would be not to neglect the plain/natural snuffs. Stuff like Kendal Brown (one of the Gawiths’), most of the Viking line, Black Rappee, any Toast, South African snuffs, etc. etc. There’s great scented stuff out there but the plain snuffs are the most interesting IMO. With a scented snuff you can say “oh it smells like sandalwood and musk” but with plain snuffs you’re just experiencing the tobacco itself which is indescribable and not something you smell in ordinary life. That makes the plain snuffs magic to me.

S

I am new to nasal snuffing too. Can anyone clarify how far up I’m supposed to get the snuff? I was thinking just the “bowl” of the nose to keep it out of the sinuses, but, it doesn’t seem to be going far enough in because it just drips out. Maybe the problem is that I’m using dry American Scotch snuff (waiting on my order from Mr. Snuff to arrive! ) I’m using Honey Bee, but it just makes gooey gobs. I think I’m doing it wrong LOL

I

@stormtracker_wv Another member @basement_shaman has recommended wetting inside your nose with water. I also remember reading something about pinching your nose right after you snuff. I use to drop like a little bit out of my nose but, since I started squeezing my nose after nothing drops unless I blow it out or drip. There was a really nice diagram I saw about snuffing and, where it should go but, I forgot what thread it was in. Basically yeah, just the bowl.

J

To get a taste of a range of different snuffs and to try some of the “best in class”, I’d recommend the following: Viking Dark: Good, strong, plain, medium grind and moisture; F&T High Dry Toast: Quite dry and fine, so a bit more difficult, but worth the trouble. Some people don’t use anything else. Toque: Pick a handful of flavors that seem to appeal, but try to include Spanish Gem and/or SP Extra Dholakia White: Get a small tin, just to try one of the most challenging and interesting snuffs on the market, even if it’s difficult. Abraxas St Casura: Try this one and/or any other in the Abraxas range that appeals.

S

Thanks @Igglet, I will try that method, and thanks for the recommendations @JakartaBoy. Honestly, I really think it may just be the snuff–I know Honey Bee is an old favorite (especially in the Southern U.S.), but it’s just so mild & sweet, as soon as it gets wet it just turns into basically syrup I am SO excited to try some of the European style

S

Just received my 1st shipment from Mr. Snuff, 8 different flavors, had no idea what to try first. For some reason, I was drawn to the beautiful little blue & silver box of Poschl’s “Gletscher Prise”–OMG AMAZING!!! Why nasal snuffing ever fell out of fashion, I have no idea LOL this is GREAT! And it DID work a LOT better than that gummy ol’ Honey Bee I am a happy camper Thanks to all for making taking this up a LOT less scary

I

Yeah. A lot of American snuffs burning like the dickens and, are pretty hard to take. I think all of them @stormtracker_wv. Poschl was my first and, I considered it the best thing I could have started on. Redbull from Poschl I find to be one of the least burning snuffs I have encountered so far. I am still pretty new to snuffing by the way but, I did tons of research a long time before ordering snuff.

J

@stormtracker_wv, none of my recommendations are either mild or sweet. Some of them, particularly HDT and Dholakia White, are often said to be “difficult” to take, but I believe that if you have experience with tobacco use, then it’s an interesting challenge rather than an insurmountable obstacle.

S

@JakartaBoy, I am looking forward to trying some of the “natural” tobacco types, and like you, @Igglet, I did a lot of research online, but there is just SOOOO much to chose from, it was hard to decide After 3 uses of the Poschl Gletscher Prise, I changed gears to Samuel Gawith’s “Grousemor”–oh man, what a wonderful snuff! Complex…more powdery than the coarser Poschl but not as dry as an American Scotch, and this made it easy to do the “swipe and wipe” technique (get a pinch, then put finger up nose and just wipe it all around in there). This snuff is AMAZING and I tasted & smelled it for a long time. I smelled…mild lavender? And maybe a little bit of rose petal, and…something like the smell of clean sheets on a clothesline It made me think of a warm summer afternoon the whole time it was in my nose, gonna be hard to stay out of that tin

I

Oh I will have to try the Grousemor. I think my favorite so far is Alpine from Poschl. My local cigar shops only has Poschl sadly. It’s like a fruity cool breeze in your nose. I thought Gletscher kind of tasted like a mild barn yard. Some how that seem’d good to me. Course I do the bacon cheese snuff from toque though.

S

@Igglet I can see where a barn yard could smell good, fresh even, well, without the manure from the barnyard animals LOL But even that’s part of nature and earthy-smelling in the field. And LOL about the Bacon Cheese snuff, I can’t believe they actually made that–I would have figured only an American company could come up with such a flavor Now I’m curious and may have to try it!!! I will try the Alpine too.

T

I can’t think of anything more disgusting than bacon and cheese snuff (well, I can but I won’t mention it here).

I

My girlfriend agrees completely. I think I like disturbing her more than how much I like the snuff. I did have a co worker smell it and, she really liked it though. I thought it odd for a lady to like Bacon and, Cheese snuff. She thought Vanilla snuff smelled disgusting.

T

At the moment I’m having a bit of an issue with any ‘flavoured’ snuff, with the exception of Hedges and FUBAR medic, both of which I like, but in small doses. Recently I’ve tried Kendal Toffee (reminded me of car air freshener), Toque Espresso and Toque Strawberry (not too bad and nice feel to take, but flavour-wise not for me), and WoS Winter Warmer (sugar, syrup etc), all interesting experiences bit not ones I would rush to repeat. I’m really liking the fairly plain ‘tobacco flavour’ snuffs like Viking, and loving WoS Best SP, gorgeous.

V

Buy snuff whose names doesn’t give any clue what’s inside. You shall be surprised anyway

I

Or buy a snuff that is a surprise! Toque’s Crazy George!

S

I’m liking the S. Gawith Grousemoore so much that I seriously may not be trying anything else for a while…it came in a big tin that’s gonna require a snuff bullet or something to carry around a portable supply. I do think I’d like a mild unflavored toast though.

I

Sad. I can not find S. Gawith Grousemoore online to buy. Never mind. I found it.

S

I received some nifty gadgets in the mail today that I purchased from Ebay: snuff bullets!!! The perfect little amount gets served up and ready-to-snuff… easily Since using this, I haven’t had much drip back out and I definitely haven’t snorked any all the way up to hit the back of my throat like I did big time this morning (yuck! but it happens).

Some reviews of the acrylic ones mention low quality, and snuff leaking out, but mine seem to be pretty sturdy and definitely aren’t leaking at all, except for that the turn dial wants to slide out some, almost like it’s going to pull out, but it’s attached on there pretty good and I just make sure to press it in all the way when I go to get some snuff. And these have acrylic heads but glass bottles, so, although breakable, they’re sturdy (gonna try to carry them in a little pouch to prevent breakage).

I was considering giving up the habit because I couldn’t seem to get my sniffs right and consistent each time, but with this it’s no-brainer perfection every time. I got 5 snuff bullets for $9.95 and that included shipping. What a great small investment for something I will enjoy (probably a little too much) over time

J

@stormtracker_wv‌, consider trying a spoon. Makes a big difference to how snuff tastes. I recommend the Mr Snuff stainless steel or titanium jobs.

I

I use my pipe tool as a spoon. I’m glad you didn’t leave us @stormtracker_wv. I find the longer I snuff the harder it is for me to mess up snuffing. Like my body is unable to mess it up. I doubt it will be true with the super dry and, ultra fine snuffs.

S

@JakartaBoy, thanks for the advice, a spoon is next on my list of accessories, never thought it could enhance the flavor of the snuff. And @Igglet, yesterday I tried some Wilson’s and Sharrow “Thyme & Lemon” that spilled out while filling my snuff bullet bottle–omg it’s so fine and dry it never hit my nose, it went right down my throat and didn’t even cause a sneeze or anything, it just shot right down LOL I’m not sure how I’ll ever learn to do that…may have to “swipe and wipe” that one with a wet finger

S

Maybe I’m just not very good at this stuff–I’ve also been trying to learn how to pack a pipe bowl properly with tobacco so it will smoke right. Not going so well LOL Next stop is my local pipe shop and see if the owner will give me a quick lesson

S

I CAN smoke a cigar–that’s one thing that’s hard to mess up

I

Oh I can mess up smoking a cigar. I always make it trail. Every time. I’m starting to think it’s something beyond my control.

H

I’ve also been trying to learn how to pack a pipe bowl properly with tobacco so it will smoke right.

First lesson is DONT pack your pipe, instead FILL it. Gravity fill and the lightest tamp at the top, a charring light or two and you should be okay. You`ll get better with time and experience. Sorry fot OT.

S

@Igglet, speaking of dry/superfine snuffs, I’m still at it trying the American Scotch snuffs…but mostly they shoot right down the back of my throat LOL It was suggested that I boxcar these but I am scared to death of taking in that much snuff at once–although it was explained that a bigger “pile” is what keeps it from shooting right back there, like it blocks itself. I don’t know LOL I really want this work–I enjoy the Tops Sweet. As for the imported snuffs, I’m still not sure it’s doing what it’s supposed to do in my nose. The Grousemoor is still my favorite (I even bought it in a pipe tobacco version), but Fribourg & Treyer is gaining strength on my favorites list (Patchouli), as-is Wilson’s “Thyme and Lemon”.

S

The Wilson’s is in a tiny 5g tin that’s nearly impossible to get open–I just spilled a good portion of it onto my sweater trying to open the can So far the only thing I don’t care much for is the Silver Dollar snuff. I have Spearmint. The flavor doesn’t last, and I don’t mind coarse snuffs, but it’s just, well, lackluster for me compared to the British imports A lot of folks are trying the Indian snuffs, but I’m afraid to try them–not only are they very strong, but folks have mentioned they’re dark black and stain their handerchiefs and under their fingernails and such…makes me wonder if they aren’t mixing some Beetlenut in there

S

Some of my snuffs–particularly the Grousemoor (it’s in a 25g tin) are starting to get clumpy–I have heard of folks putting a few grains of dry rice in there to keep them dry in case moisture gets in (and I would assume moisture = clumps). any advice on this?

I

I too am afraid of the Indian snuffs. I am trying to promise my self I will order some on my next order. I have been told they are not that scary.

J

@Igglet, the Indians are a surprisingly civilized bunch. Not scary and worth the trouble. Allow me to suggest Dholakia Sparrow, if you like dry, plain, strong toasts.

S

I think I figured out what I’m doing wrong…I’ve been inhaling gently and very slowly–it’s like I’ve been sniffing each individual grain of snuff up my nose, no wonder it shoots down my throat LOL I watched a vid on YouTube last night and I should be doing a gentle but quick sniff…I tried it and sure enough, boom–success! Except I still got it up in my sinuses and choked when I tried it with Tops. I may give up on that LOL

S

And thanks to JarkartaBoy and Igglet, now I want to try the Dholakia sparrow now too, I need something with a big more nicotine hit anyway.

I

I’m getting the Havana Toast by S.W.S… I’m sure that would have the nic hit most are looking for.
