Bakelite Snuff Boxes

Hi Guys, Just thought I might add to the snuff box discussions. Although I own many metal and wood snuff boxes, I have found one of my favorites is the Bakelite snuff boxes from the 1920’s - 1930’s. You will still find plenty available on eBay - I have two from there - they both cost me £5 each. I still see them on eBay for similar amounts. Although a rather drab snuff brown colour - I think they work really well. Firstly they are pretty airtight (mine are completely airtight), and they hold just the right amount for me - I guess around 6 gms. They are surprisingly solid, and feel nice and substantial in the hand. They don’t taint (just wash them out if you must) - I change flavours all the time. They are pretty strong, and will survive a drop - although they will tend to pop open. A tips - make sure they click shut - most eBay sellers will mention whether they click shut - don’t touch it if it doesn’t. The best thing about them is that the door that opens gives you full access (you’ll understand the benefit of this over the onefortheroad boxes if you have them) and the snuff doesn’t clog the hinge. I love all my onefortheroad boxes greatly, and my silver boxes - but my Bakelite ones have a special place, neat, strong, airtight, non-taint and they are snuff coloured! And at the moment they are soooo cheap. I presently have F&T Bordeaux in one and F&T Burgundy in the other - perfect. Jonathan

Yeah you see a lot of the old Poschl Bakelite snuff boxes on ebay. They are pretty nice.

I’ve just put a bid in for one. The same design as above. Stefan

Stefan - which one? We don’t want to be bidding against each other!

I have one of those but it doesn’t click shut so I’ve never used it. Couldn’t complain since it was thrown in as an extra on a purchase of a snuffbox that was really nice and works great.

I just saw a couple of these on ebay. One is like the pictured one here and the other has a celtic pattern on the lid. Goodluck guys. If you are stateside, Pier One Imports stores sells these nifty little containers for temporary tabletop storage. They appear to be ceramic and are not air tight but might be good as a fashionable way of keeping a short supply of something like Dholakia on hand. They come in a package of three for $10 and will easily hold 10-15g.

 lxskllr… you are a gentleman, and (obviously from your reviews) a scholar. They say though, “all’s fair in love and eBay auctions”. I - personally - provide no such fair warnings. Oops…

Looks like Stefan is going for 390014141383 (there are only two on there at the moment) so I’ll go for the other one on UK Ebay - 280291786660. Thanks for holding off on these lxskllr. Much appreciated. RobMe - entirely up to you…

Not cool Tony. This is so wrong of you to say this to me; The implications of your comment are almost beyond belief. I’m stunned.

I’m Walrussd1985 on ebay. Stefan

Strangely enough, I’m ermtony on Ebay  Trouble is, these days they don’t show the bidder IDs, just Bidder 1, Bidder 2 etc.

yea but there is a way to figure out who bids what as long as you know someones ebay name, like walrussd1985 and ermtony

I didn’t know that, PP. How does that work?

@ermtony… From any eBay page that has a Search button, click on ‘Advanced Search’, and then find items by Bidder. Btw, my eBay handle is blufront

Ah! That makes sense. Thanks Rob. Looks like both of those auctions are going too high for my liking. But there will be others

I couldn’t even find those sons of boxes on that bloody site. And now that you’ve driven the blasted prices up I think I’ll just keep digging the hole in that piece of wood I have. Oh…and thanks for the info you dust huffer!

You can find them by searching on the lot numbers 390014141383 and 280291786660. The prices are about what I would expect at that stage in the auctions. They’ll go higher though.
