Bakelite box

Where have you been all my life? Bought an intact version on eBay for around thirty dollars shipped. Probably a laughable price to the Britishers, but they don’t seem to exist in the states. Easy to open, seals well, and keeps moist snuffs in usable condition for about 2 days. As a bonus, it’s ugly.

As a bonus, it’s ugly.

This made me laugh out loud for real .

@Malatesta Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I suppose. If you are talking about the rectangular type with the geometric pattern on the lid, I actually think they are quite pretty. On the other hand, I do also have a handmade phenolic one (same type of plastic as bakelite) in white and 1930s green which is a bit more of an acquired taste… I will try to remember to post photos when I get home this evening.

@Justin, we certainly can’t dispute matters of taste, true. However, perhaps I should clarify my statement–I like the back and sides of the box and find it quite tactile. I don’t like the geometric pattern, much. But hey, you post a copy of that 1930’s green one and maybe we can do a deal?

These haven’t come out very well - the middle section is much more green in real life - but it gives you some idea. I have never seen anything else quite like it…

wow, the inside is green

Indeed it is. Now that’s a box in poor taste, wouldn’t you say?

I never knew my box was so pretty.

I never knew my box was so pretty.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA

I like those. The geometric pattern one has a certain class to it and the white one is slick. How is the fit on those boxes @Justin‌? I have two traditional style snuff boxes, both of which require a little bit of beeswax to seal up along the lid edges properly (which I don’t mind).

@Southern_Snuffster Provided that you get one that is not damaged - there is a tiny lip on the inside of the lid that holds it in place - then the fit of the geometric boxes is good. Certainly not airtight, but they don’t leak. My white and green one is the same design as the standard wooden flip-top boxes that you see all over the place. Again, it’s snuff-proof but not airtight, although the lid is a little loose. If you are going to buy a brown one, then check that the inside of the lid looks like the picture below, with the little semicircular lip inside the lid still intact.
