how big of a pile would be considered average for a gentleman, dare i say even dandy of the olden years. ive gotten the pinch down but was wondering about the back of the hand. im wanting to get back to smaller amounts so i was curious about how much would be right for back of the hand. is it also an apple seed size amount like you would get from a smaller pinch?

I only use the back of the hand for when I want significantly more than I can pinch, generally used for heaping piles of schmaltzers. I suppose you can use small amounts off the back of the hand but the main benefit of that techique is you can take massive piles off the back of your hand.

I agree with both of you. A pinch is easy,. It’s also easy to use the back of the hand, especially the anatomical snuffbox. Volume you use is quite variable. I feel it depends on how fine it is. To me, a very fine product like a toast or White Elephant for example, is much easier to control placement and beneficial outcome using the pinch method. I can and do utilize back of hand for same but it takes a lot of practice to avoid filling your sinuses. How much volume to use… Generally from size of an apple seed to a large pea generally works. Just know that there is no hard fast rule here. Experiment and by all means enjoy!!!

Find products to me are easier to do back of hand. A more coarse grain or a more moist snuff might say Africa from Wilson’s is perfect for back in the hand cuz it kind of just stays there and doesn’t spread out also more control to nostril because I find myself not having to wipe my nose as much with a coarser snuff. I’m currently on gawith and it works pretty good for back of the hand but only when I want a heavier snoot LOL. I mostly use a spoon it’s just more satisfying to me unless I just need nicotine
