Not as an anachronistic means to correct a recalcitrant child, but a method to stop the snuff going too far back. I think I’ve been sniffing too hard so have gone back to this method to see if it helps. Do you folks think it will help?
On any other forum that title would mean something very different
Back of the hand means slap where I come from. I’m not advocating corporal punishment, its just a play on words.
I use the back of my hand when snuffing, or the boxcar. I find both an easy way to take fine snuff, and easiest if laid down in a flat pile instead of a mound, if that makes sense, and to use short and sharp sniffs. That way it doesn’t shoot to the back as easily, and doesn’t just shoot to one area of my nasal cavity. With the boxcar, I’ll sort of “shimmy” my hand after scooping snuff onto my nail; it seems to spread and loosen the snuff, also making it easier. I don’t know if what works for me, helps you. Does inhaling deeply before a pinch not help you any?
I have been using the back of hand over boxcar lately. Only downside is having to be a bit more mindful of residue on the nose.
@Gsoms Thanks for your response. I do inhale before snuffing but for some reason I still get too much snuff in the throat. I use the pinch method. Even when inhaling deeply the snuff goes too far back. I haven’t tried the boxcar method but will give it a go.
I think this was @Juxaposer 's trick/description from many moons back, but it helped me with pinching toasts which up to then had been a bit hit [the throat] or miss - Imagine that you’re sniffing a flower or smelling the perfume of a lady, a short delicate sniff is the ticket here. I personally find the back of hand method is OK, but more difficult to control than pinching, boxcar or spoon; but that might just be me!
Yes, I was doing ok pinching the snuff yesterday. It seems that if I’m over cautious and concerned about it, it will hit the throat. Better almost to be casual about it. This was easy yesterday as I’d had a fair amount of ale!
As a very new novice, I have tried a few ways to find " my way " … all I have at hand are dry American Scotches btw - I have some tins on order but not in hand yet … SO - Knife edge / key bumping - lol - this was how I tried first, since , umm… SWIM had experience with this method in the early 90s… lol … Back of hand - I got snuff in my eye. In. My . Eye. Dip thumb in can, slide into boxcar - works like a charm…
I haven’t yet tried the boxcar method, but i have snuff at hand and will give it a blast.
