Those of you who have read my other post already know I don’t enjoy perfumed snuff. Strongly scented is fine, perfume sucks. Recently I placed an order with Mr. Snuff for some of the plain snuffs recommended by the members of this group. Most of them were Samuel Gawith products. I ordered Scotch Black, Black Coffee, London Brown, Blue Crest, Red Crest, and McCombie. I had previously purchased Apple and Zip. Most of these (except the Crests and McCombie) have a rather unpleasant artificial scent in them. I know about the ammonia in fresh tins and this isn’t ammonia. My stash of Tom Buck reeks of it until it airs properly. For lack of better words, I am kind of bummed out. In the tin the Black coffee smells heavenly; in my nose, I just can’t make out the coffee over the other smell for about 10 min. Damn, damn, DAMN! Airing probably won’t help any…I let the apple air on a plate for over a week until it was dry as desert sand. Didn’t help. Since I haven’t read about anybody else having anything of the sort happen to them on Snuffreviews.com I’ll take it that it’s just me with this problem. I dumped the Apple since it was so strong but I won’t dump these. I’ll snuff them but I won’t enjoy it much. If you have a similar experience with SG or another producer, please let me know if, and how you overcame it. On a bright note, the Red Crest is awesome and I’ll probably order more at some point.
The rappee style snuffs are brined and fermented which gives them a distinct aroma, an acquired taste. Best fresh from a vacuum sealed tin. This includes Scotch Black and London Brown maybe even Mcombie to a lesser extent. Too bad about the Apple, I personally really like that one however artificial it is, and it certainly is.
At the end of the day its down to personal preferences, so other peoples likes and dislikes are a very innacurate tool. Try using snuff you don’t like well diluted with plainer snuffs, experiment a bit and you might be surprised that you make something you really do like. Dumping snuff isn’t a good idea because it can often be used in some way. Also, a moist snuff that you find the flavour unpleasant could be aired until it had very little flavour and rehydrated - some snuff loses most of its taste when it gets dry because the moisture carries the aromatics away with it in evaportaion. You may find you end up with a dry, neutral snuff you can blend with.
I am surprised you did not like the london brown. Also, I have to agree taking in a bit of air seems to help.
That sucks. I just ordered my first SG snuffs, but Mr. Snuff was out of the coarser snuffs I wanted to try. I’m glad you posted something because now I might just order 1 or 2 instead of 7 with my next order. I will say this: I have tried some snuffs and hated them. Then a month later I can’t put them down. Before you leave them out, you should give them a little bit of time for your nose to get used to them. I definitely get the feeling that hardly anyone has tried London Brown and not liked it too, given the rave reviews on snuff reviews and mentions on here too. That really sucks.
I quite like London Brown, but find it impractical to use most of the time due to the sheer messiness of it (being quite moist and coarse). I am thinking about re-grinding some to get a finer consistency. Has anyone tried this? How did it work out?
I guess I’m getting used to it, it still reminds me of “Dutch Maid powdered cleanser” that we used on our porcelain tub as a kid. I might even start to like it by tuesday or wednesday. It is most definately not a love-at-first-pinch type of deal though. The apple was another story altogether. After it dried for a week I kept pinchin on it here-and-there and the scent just didn’t go away. I guess I have to try a Black Rappee style from another manufacturer to see if it is just the nature of the leaf or not. Like I said, I dig the Red Crest and since I am in the process of finding a daily rotation, I am not all that disappointed TBH. @jazzi_mike - I am overly sensative to perfumes and many other scents so don’t place much stock in my somewhat slanted opinion, it is probably just me.
Really? Who else does a Black Rappee?
Wilson’s - Princes.
I really like the SP No. 1, the Kendal Browns and the Scotch Black. Honestly these are the only ones from SG I use a lot.
As much as I like London Brown, I have to say my favourite coarse snuff from SG is McCombie. It is a taxi style grind but medium moisture, and very tasty it is too. Stefan
My fav. SG snuff is definately Kendal Brown Plain, McCombie is a close second and I have yet to try Kendal Brown Original
I don’t know Jux…I surmise from your post and that of ermtony, pickin’s might be slim. Ahhh well. I’ll be honest though, I don’t think it is something natural to the tobacco. Apple and Zip seem to be more of an SP type of mill (does that make sense?) I have no clue what it could be and I really hope I can find some more SG products without it since they have too many that sound appealing. It would be my dumb f@ckin luck to be THE ONE to find a standard (for SG) additive offensive.
Count me in as one who does not care much for London Brown or Black Rappee.Throwing them out is out of the question though, just because I might change my gourd about them. But so far, I find them repulsive… and that’s giving them a fair shake about twice a month now for 3-4 months.
I just reread this thread. Today there really are a lot of Sam Gawith’s snuffs I enjoy on a regular basis: The crests and the Kendal Browns, also the London Brown, the SP Scotch (really good) and the Scotch Black. I think these are wonderful traditional snuffs.
To me the SG’s I’ve tried are so much more natural smelling than Poeschls, for example. Love the KB’s
By nose bad scent is often more a question of intensity than really nature.
Here again it’s also importent to stay open.My first pinch of Black Rappee(it was the original, but I like all the black S G range),let me very interrogative, but, very fast, interrogation became interest and finally pleasure, pinches to pinches…
By this way you can enjoy NTSU or Pariser N°2 -]
my initial feeling is that the grinds on these may not appeal to a new user. I have been experiencing a lot of snuff since I decided I didn’t like Scotch Black, and today I opened a 25g of GH Kendal Brown and am crazy for it. Makes me think I need to revisit SG.
Isn’t snuff dumping a felony, next time dump it in an envelope labelled with my address
