I have been modifying my collection and changing my regular orders for the season. For the summer I enjoy menthols, fruity and floral snuffs and generally anything light. Now that Autumn and winter are coming I have used up and traded away all my light snuffs because I know I will not use them. My collection is now full of heavy toasts, warm scents of vanilla and coffee ect. Does anybody else do this?

C

Yep. Another good one is Jaap’s Potpourri #1.

S

Not really, I tend to stay pretty consistant from season to season. Although if I’m cooking a season-specific meal, I’ll sometimes swap out my snuff to compliment my food.

O

I will be doing this as it slowly gets colder and closer to Christmas, I plan on obtaining Molens A/P as I understand it has a great pine scent which will remind me of Christmas trees from my youth, and also some of Toque’s Christmas Pudding shall be in order.

B

McC Clove has always been a favorite cold weather variety of mine… and yes, most all of Jaap’s snuff are very fine ,too. Kind of reminds me of the time I visited Jaap and we walked down the frozen canals after we both drank our firkins.I was wearing my brown jumpsuit so the cold had no affect upon me…aye, but that be another story

S

yep, +1 with ourlastdefeat … while only my first season with Xmas Pudding … as the chill enters the October air in the mornings, it does seem seasonally appropriate … and can just smell Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years all rolled up in it.

A

Yes, toasts are for winter.

B

A/P and Latakia are nice in the winter, also like a bit of O&G when the air has a nice crisp chill to it, seems to give a menthol a little bit extra.

B

@Bigsnoot I find that in -30 menthol makes my nose feel like its going to fall off! Last time I tried menthol in the winter my nose hurt like hell for around half an hour.

K

I have been using Samuel Gawith Scotch black a fair bit lately, it adds the smell of burning coal fires to the autumn air.

B

@Branasaur…wow I was thinking more along the lines of 30 than -30…I’d imagine some brown icicles dangling from the nose would be commonplace at -30 hehe.

B

Haha well im talking in celsius

X

I think at -30 Celsius you’d be dead. (unless you build an igloo to live in like me)

K

At -30 humidity in your nose freezes immediately with every intake of air. For a second, you actually have ICE in your nose. Then it melts when you breath out. I have seen -38 C once in Quebec City a few years ago.

D

If Google’s conversion is correct, the coldest it has been where I have been living in the last 11 years is -23 C (-10F). Without the wind blowing it’s surprisingly not bad. If the air is stirring, it’s a miserable experience. I just moved into the city a couple months ago so the wind is lessened a lot. We would get gusts at 60 - 70 mph sometimes and drift everything shut. M-i-s-e-r-a-b-l-e.

B

Quite often it gets about -20 to -23 ish with the wind blowing. Since I live in a valley the cold air likes to sit here and the wind likes to blow around a lot.

J

The coldest ever recorded where my house is…54F, that’s 12C, I guess I should drive up the mountain so I can relate to what you guys are talking about.

N

January of 2009  we reached a record -36*C.
Entire vineyards were lost.
When we did the ice wine harvest the warmest it got that day was -15*C.

M

WoS Royal George is a good winter snuff, warms you up!

J

I live in an area that has winter days where it records the coldest temperature in the USA.

(Saranac Lake, NY - I took this clip from the wikipedia) - “While the region’s cool, clear air was part of what made Saranac Lake famous, it can be a challenge. Winters are quite cold and it is not uncommon for the village to be the coldest place in the continental United States.

I’ve seen it over (or should I say “under”?) -40 Fahrenheit. Luckily it usually only lasts a few days. If I were outside in that temperature, I would not be using a menthol snuff, that is for sure. It’s way too cold to warrant any further “cooling” effect in the nose! You’d get “brain-freeze” , like when you eat ice-cream too fast! I’ve only been snuffing a few years but so far I seem to choose a snuff based on mood more than anything else. I would still use a menthol in winter, just probably not when I’m outside or if its below 0 degrees, and it does make a good decongestant when you have a nasty cold with a clogged nose. Just can’t use TOO much or it could have a reverse effect.

M

I’m not sure why I was surprised by this but, SG Ma’s Ruin is quite nice for an autumn evening noseful.

@nightcap

You own a vineyards and do ice wine? Man that’s freaking awesome! Where are you located and do you sell to public?

N

@kebamp
