Autumn is almost upon us, and I’m totally getting into the vibe! It’s been my favorite season since I was a child. I believe that us snuffers are inherently sentimental creatures, and scents in particular for us have the power to invoke happy memories and warm feelings. As I contemplate my next order, I would like to ask the community… what are your favorite fall seasonal snuffs? Thanks in advance!
Autumn Is Schmalzler Season . Something about the falling leaves and temperate temperature make Schmalzlers most appealing to this nose. I don’t know how many agree ; but this is the time of the year they come into rotation for me. They don’t seem to have the same appeal in hot weather or frigid digits. It can last till xmas and then I am done till autumn the following year.
@basement_shaman I definitely agree with that. The last week has been pretty cool and breezy and overcast, so I’ve already broken out the Schmalzler kit. Aecht Altbayerischer and Doppelt-Fermentiert (Bernards), Perlesreuter and Schmalzler A Brasil (Poschl). Definitely the right weather for those.
Hitsuzen, what a civilised topic, thanks. Shaman, sir, I need exposure to schmalzler but the fermentation and alleged smokiness sounds ideal for autumn.
Schmalzlers are good for autumn, I also like darker fruit snuffs in autumn, just in time for picking the berries too so it all sort of works. SWS creme du figgy is perfect for autumn.
@Skell18 Cool, so I’ve already been on a good roll then! I agree 100% about the SWS Creme De Figue, for all the same reasons Schmalzlers work. Also, OM Black Velvet. I don’t really get any coffee in it, but I do get alot of dried fruit, cinnamon, and clove. Came as a sample with my last order and I’ll be ordering an ounce in time for cooler weather.
Straight virginia does it for me as the weather cools, the sun gets hazy, and the nights get longer. :(|)
Toque had a pumpkin pie back in 2013 .hopefully it will show this year ,Toque Xmas pudding is also in season. WoS Winter warmer is seasonally spiced. I didn’t get around to SG christmas pinch and had not read much about it. Anyone know if it is good?
@basement_shaman I have a tin of xmas pudding in storage that I got in a trade last spring, but I haven’t tried it yet. Is it just straight clove, or are there layers?
I dig out the Fichtennadel when the weather turns cool. I like it first thing in the cool crisp mornings. I have a box here that is over 2 years old and it’s still in good shape.
@Hitsuzen every nose is different. clove is up front i agree, but there are other scents to pick out also. Best to start with a clean palette. This olfactory isn’t as keen as most to dissect each scent.
And being a yank I never heard of xmas pudding until I came to SH. I like to try the culinary version some day. It sound better than that nasty fruit cake no one cares for.
@basement_shaman the SG Christmas pinch is very nice, I have a tin from last year somewhere unopened. Christmas pudding the food is not something I tend to eat and have always preferred the smell of, to the taste. I’m surprised you can’t get them over your side of the pond.
i can’t wait for all the seasonal snuffs to be upon us!!! Christmas pinch is one of my favourites! Would love to have tried toque pumpkin ! Anyone want to trade lol

Pine and menthol says it all. Fluffy reddish-brown, I guess the pine oils it a bit. Think Pinesol cleaner… The menthol isn’t too strong, I quite like it, occasionally, but hardly an all-day snuff.
Bernard’s makes a pine and menthol, just can’t remember the name. Not a seasonal snuff but still nice to enjoy for the cooler months. Anyone remember the name of it?
@BenStein, do you mean Bernard Fichtennadel?
@Mouse thanks! You just saved me four bucks!
@BenStein That’s what it’s all about!
@basement_shaman I got all excited about Toque Pumpkin Pie, until I saw the thread about Toque possibly not doing it this year :((
@Hitsuzen you read that wrong that was 2014.Last I checked it’s 2015.
December 2014 in Types of Snuff Flag
I’m really sorry and am addressing this to all who have asked why I didn’t do it again this year. I have to admit I just didn’t get this one together. I promise to do it for next year.
He promised .You should send a reminder so it don’t slip through the grey matter
Oh, that was an old post! I’m excited again! @Roderick Is this something we can look forward to this year?
@Mouse Thanks I’ll put it on my wish list. I buy pinesol to mop the floor. And degrease the stoves hood. Good stuff. Smells better than Lestoil; I only break out for tough jobs.
@basement_shaman I’ve always been partial to Ajax =))
We make a butterscotch snuff which is very autum-ish (what I perceive to be fall-ish) and we have another scent in formulation (amongst MANY MANY more) that is reminiscent of fall here in the apple orchards of Michigan.
@Hitsuzen Did you mean Like this?

@basement_shaman You know, as I was typing it that scene jumped in my head and I thought “Someone’s gonna call that, for sure”.
You know, having this Creme De Figue in my nose has me thinking… any of you guys ever had Fields Of Juniper? How would you rate that as an autumn snuff?
Curious about that one, too.
Field of Junipers is a beautiful, light body snuff, highly recommended, subtle scent. Think I’ll have some, it’s been a while. Not so sure it says Fall to me though. I think of fall snuffs as being on the heavy side.
^^^ Agree FOJ is very light [toast like grind]. If you like smokey wood campfires, SWS Mull of Oa is your huckleberry.Reminds me of american scotch [Honest Scotch] but with a courser grind and more moisture.
I love Fields of Juniper. It is far lighter than Creme de Figue, and does not particularly make me think of Autumn, but I think it is a great snuff for any time of the year.
SG Grousemoor is the snuff that always mkes me think of Autumn.
I love this topic, because I love the season and Halloween. I always make it out to the local pumpkin patch where all my relatives rent a spot to make a bonfire. So for fall (autumn), I like the snuffs that remind me of that campfire smell. HDT, Fire & ice, Lime Toast, etc. are getting me in the spirit. Hoping to see some pumpkin snuff from Toque for Thanksgiving time. I have Christmas Pinch coming in the mail - just in case I can’t think of anything better to set the mood for xmas.
You’ve probably all spotted it already but Roderick has Pumpkin Pie in stock and ready to go.I have some up my nose as I type and very tasty it is too.
I already ordered a tin of Pumpkin Pie. Can’t wait to get it!
@StraightFlushJedi Absolutely! I made an account with their main site just to order it before it all disappears B-) While I was at it, I ordered some other Toques I hadn’t tried yet, and a couple that I had tried, loved, and since forgotten about. Very excited for this package!
@Hitsuzen Yeah, I picked up a few others that took my fancy as well including a tin of the Xmas Pudding that I’ve put away for December. That one is joining a few other goodies I’ve tucked away for when the days get colder and shorter and the season starts to get jolly. I really want to open and try them all now but I think it will be worth the wait.
I think as the days get cooler I will add in more of the snuffs that give one impression in the warmth of a house, then present new facets when you step out in the chilly air and take your first sniffs.
A few that come to mind: Bernard’s Magic Moments, Poschl Lowen-Prise, F&T Dr. J.R. Justice, and SG Firedance.
It apple picking time So I broke out the Wow! Apple pie Nice autumn snuff. I think I will make some spiced apple butter in the crock pot
Yesterday it was still 100 degrees. Fall? I have no idea what that is anymore…
Spotted Dick. “It’s a pudding”.
Tempete from Old Mill. A great snuff to bring in the Autumn. Molasses. leather, spices. Delectabl;e
Toque pumpkin pie has only gotten better and better for me every day. I just ordered 2 more tins, it is that good. Other than that McChrystals cinnamon X-mas Blend is my all time favorite winter blend. I just contacted Mary from McChrystals and she advised me they will have it in stock late Oct. early November, its simply amazing. I am also waiting for DK Gingerbread to arrive in the mail… I have heard big things about it… Review is a promise once it arrives…
@basement_shaman I have a tin of WOW apple pie that does not satisfy me. Maybe I got a bad tin? Anywho I dont find myself re-visiting it. Do you want it? If so PM me, I will send ya it.
Wow Apple Pie had too much clove in it for my taste.
One snuff that I’m partial to is Bernard Gekachelter Virginie, coarse, smoky and easy to take toasted virginia, great when the temperatures start to fall.
When the cold, damp weather appears my nose always says it’s time to break out the De Kralingse Pompadour. That one is lovely on a cold day.
WoS Best dark too, turns a walk along a street into a walk in the woods. F&T Santo Domingo is also nice on a cold day, and I’d imagine the tin of SWS Aged Border Rappee I just got will be a favourite this autumn and winter.
I agree that Bernard Gekachelter Virginie is a masterpiece. I wouldn’t define it as toasted, more like something deeply fermented, animalistic and slightly smoked.
@Hitsuzen and @basement_shaman and all other autumn snuffers: My Schmalzlers have finally arrived - Bernard Brasil, Bernard Aecht and Poschl Sudfrucht. And yes… very autumnal! Thanks for mentioning these outstanding snuffs.
@Nulliverse Glad you found something you enjoy! My big four for Schmalzlers are Bernards Doppelt-Fermentiert, Bernards Aecht Altbayerischer, Poschl Schmalzler A Brasil, and Poschl Perlesreuter.
What’s a good source for Poschl schmalzlers? And does anybody besides Bernard and Poschl make good ones?
@Snuffbox I get mine from MS. I’m sure there is probably a german site out there you could order from, but shipping from Ireland is already so expensive, I’ve never looked elsewhere. Poschl comes in 500 gram bags, so I’m sure there are people who would be willing to trade some off to you if you asked them. That’s a hint, by the way.
Sternecker. All good, the Ungefettet is “fat free” so you need to add your own. I’ve used clarified butter, lard, chicken fat, goose fat and duck fat with great success. You can also use mineral oil but I don’t know why you would.

Oh, good call @chefdaniel Sternecker Staubinger is like shoving a cedar plank in your nose. SO woody, there is really nothing else like it.
A mind is a terrible thing to lose. I just misplaced mine. This has been in the works for a while, but I forgot to provide info on it, until now when I literally tripped over the aging crate (I even stubbed my big toe, dammit)
Buttered Rum Toddy
Reminiscent of the classic cold weather tipple, Hot Buttered Rum, this snuff is built on a base of Dark Air Cured Green River Burley and Honduran Ligero with Piedmont Red Virginia providing some lighter character and natural sweetness. It is liberally doused with Black spiced rum, dark Muscovado sugar, molasses, a generous helping of hand churned butter, cloves, cinnamon, sea salt, allspice, lemon and a hint of nutmeg, pressed between charred oak grilling planks before being milled to a medium grind.
@chefdaniel - ^^LIKE^^
@chefdaniel Now THERE’s my winter warmer! When can we get some?
November 15-19, give or take a day or two. It still needs some drying time before going into the mill. I will keep all ya’ll posted. I’m hoping well in advance of Thanksgiving.
This is my first Fall season as a snuffer so my experience is limited but Old Mill Black Velvet for it’s heavy clove aromas and Solstice for the sweet gingerbread aspects are really hitting the spot.
I like a lot of the Old Mill varieties for Autumn as well as the Sternecker and Bernard’s Schmalzlers…
Especially with Stouts / Porters / Single Malts…
Something about the heavier, darker snuffs that just feel right when it starts getting cold outside.
I’m not particularly fond of menthol snuffs but they have been calling to me this week, doesn’t seem like it would be an autumn snuff…
