anyone here ever sniffed / dipped / smoked nicotiana suaveolens? Also known as australian tobacco from New South Wales and Victoria? It seems to be quite like Rustica that also grows in Australia. But Suaveolens is mainly a gardener’s thing when you google it. But I wonder if it is also used for consumption. Maybe an idea for our artisan snuff makers here to come with this exotic tobacco???
I’m not familiar with that type of tobacco but it sounds interesting. Incidentally, just the other day I learned that nasal snuff has been illegal in the state of Victoria since 1987. Absurd legislation. http://www.tobaccoinaustralia.org.au/fandi/fandi/c09s4.htm
@Jari_T, as I understand it, not technically illegal to possess, but not legal to sell retail. You’re still allowed to import it yourself. Still absurd, of course.

Ah, that’s not quite as barbaric as I thought. Pretty much the same thing as with snus here in Finland.

Snus should be legal to sell, use, buy, and or, any and all possible combinations of the above! Science has long since proven snus use is harmless and does not cause cancer or any other smoking/tobacco related illness or disease, thanks to it being legal in Sweden and cancer rates dwindling there because of it. The ridiculous warning labels for oral cancer and tooth or gum loss the FDA requires on snus cans in the USA are outright lies! The FDA knows this too, but unfortunately too many smokers do not. They see the warning labels and say, “To hell with it. I might as well keep smoking.” If I were president, queen, or dictator this is the first law I would do away with. End rant
This excellent tobacco is even a proposed medicine to Ebola: http://www.kentucky.com/2014/08/09/3373025\_how-owensboro-tobacco-grew-a-possible.html?rh=1
I’m having a go at growing Nicotiana benthamiana, Nicotiana gossei and Nicotiana cavicola. These are Australian natives but I have no nicotiana suaveolens seeds to have a go, otherwise I would . So far the N. Benthamiana is the only one I’ve managed to get to sprout and thrive. I tried some more cavicola and gossei too see if they’ll germinate. I did have a cavicola germinate and sprout but it died. I just transplanted a couple of N. benthamiana seedlings tonight into a bigger pot. I’ll see if they survive my not so green thumbs. Also growing some N. Rustica, Yellow Orinoco, Golden Virginia, Madole and a couple Samsun for a bit of fun. Might not be so fun if the boys in blue rock up to my door since it isn’t strictly legal to grow in Oz. Welcome to the nanny state where you can’t buy snuff, snus, chew, dip or grow your own. But you can buy a pack of Winnie blues, in a plain package of course and it’ll set you back 20 or so dollars for the privilege. Although one can import smokeless tobacco for a price, a can of snus will set me back $20 after I pay tax which has become the norm now, whereas previously most of it slipped through the cracks. My tobacco habit became a whole lot more expensive. The lucky country indeed!
thank you and good luck with those @Twistie ! You would expect more from a free, colonial country as yours about tobacco use. But I read even the Aboriginals knew the use of tobacco long ago. Maybe in Western Australia there is still some bentamiana growing in the wild? Some Rustica also seems to be native to Australia. Maybe it all lands at Toque’s factory? Keep us up posted on these interesting growings, I never tried but am willing to start growing these next year. My thumbs and fingers are far from green as well so…
