The thread about snuff taking countries got me to thinking: how many of us snuff in public in an obvious way that someone would notice? I let certain coworkers know, but I’m descrite. I don’t tend to be very public about it. Only once while I was out and about have I had anyone question and it led to a pleasent conversation, but he didn’t want to try it. The main reason I’m descrite is that I’m often messy and have to clean all of the extra brown or black from my nose. My coworkers find it gross so I’ve started turning my back or going to another room. That habit has persisted in other public settings. But if many of us using it are often descrite, we may not be seeing the true amount of use.

I would love to see more open snuff use. I rarely see others using snuff and even then it is most likely in a pub. I don’t hide my snuff use on the whole but am discreet when seeing clients. Mostly people are curious and ask me about snuff use, though often show concern for my health. My ethnicity, I think, gives me some leeway, as often people imagine that my snuff use has some cultural significance. I am sure some people find snuff taking disgusting but they are rarely people I would wish to keep company with. Similarly, I am sure that some people make meaning of snuff use as indicating socially unacceptable personality traits. I am lucky that my profession is not normative in it’s outlook. I would hate to have to labour under the disapproving gaze of others.

im usually discreet. i preferred pinching to the nose or sniffing off the back of my hand when more private, used to use bullets in public. now im starting to like the thumbnail method, i think it could carry over into more public use, not sure though. still prefer tapboxes if not bullets in public for cleanliness and ease, the snuff that never leaves my pocket (dont use it much unless im out) is red bull, partially for that reason, partially because it wont dry out. Snus use is my public thing though, its much more discreet, particularly in lectures.

T

I’m usually driving when I want to snuff, and take a pinch at stop lights…gotten a few double-takes from neighboring cars, lol. However at my studio I snuff discreetly, and certainly not in front of kids classes.

T

I am not ostentatious about my snuffing, but I do it openly wherever I am and have never had a problem, if anything strangers are curious and half the time end up trying a pinch. My friends are totally used to it as they’ve seen me do it for years now.

I have snuffed openly in a pub before, and although I did feel a little self conscious I wasn’t aware of any funny looks or unease from other patrons

H

Some older guy walked around the corner while I was snuffing a big ol’ pinch off the back of my hand the other day and he gave me the weirdest look haha. I usually try to be a little discreet, in America if you’re sniffing powder people think you’re doing coke or heroin or something.

Depends where I’m at really: I don’t sit a my desk and sniff away (although I’m not ruling out that possibility). It’s like Robert Downey Jr. says in Game of Shadows “It’s so overt it’s covert” I normally have a pinch when I’ve made a coffee etc. Strangely whilst out and about I don’t really give a monkey’s; people in other social situations seem to find it odd, in the sense that it’s uncommon, but don’t judge it as ‘bad’ pe se if I take a pinch out of a tin or snuff box (usually on the end of my watch chain). I normally use a bullet when walking or driving which I have gotten some funny looks over that. Although no one has actually confronted me about it - I think this is due to the use of bullets for alternate nose candy largely. I was waiting for some colleauges of mine outside Poundland the other week and took a bullet of London Brown to both nostrils there was a woman walking by with a young child who she scooped towards her in a ‘save my child from the drug fiend’ type way; I had a laugh to myself about that I do suspect at some point I’ll have to explain myself to a member of her majesties consabulary that “no… this isn’t some kind of illegal drug… Yes, I’m fine to drive, how is this different from smoking in terms of due care and attention” but hey, I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it

S

I could care less if someone thought I was doing something illegal, but for some reason I have a problem with the “ewww he has black all over his nose”. Or the ewww he has a big black bugger hanging out his nose" look. I try to step away from people when I blow my nose as well to be polite. So cleaning after a pinch is something I try to be descrite with and thus the pinch itsself is descrite. I guess it’s just a querk of mine. But due to this most folks wouldn’t know I snuff unless they are around me a lot.

S

I go out of my way to be obvious esp if there’s a cop nearby. Haven’t managed to successfully bait one yet, but I’ll persist. Last time I snuffed in front of a cop , I did get his attention but he appeared to realise pretty quickly what I was doing. The spoil-sport.

I use snuff in public and offered some to the local policeman, He said he wouldn’t try it, He said he has a low tolerance for nicotine, he tried dip, made his head spin. He did break out some Indian Khaini , He just had rolled up it in a sandwich bag.He said he got it at the donuts shop from the clerk. He tossed a couple chips in his mouth, at this point the shock factor was on me . Most people mind there own business, some are in shock and awe, some say my nose will fall off, other think it is gross. But I don’t care what people think; that is their problem and this is my pleasure

B

I snuff at my desk at work and tend to pinch from my snuff box, as opposed to tapping on the back of my hand. I feel like I tend to look like a coke fiend with the latter method. I don’t know if my co-workers notice. Our office is an open desk environment, no walls or dividers just white desks and computers, so its very probable that some of them have seen me. I don’t really care either way. I probably wouldnt snuff openly in a meeting or in someone else’s space, but don’t hide it if they are coming to talk to me. edit. Snuffing right now at my desk…

M

I don’t care what people think. If Anyone notices I offer them some.

A

I put a few pinches on the lid of my tin and then shove the bottom half of a cross pen up into my sinus’. Nobody here notices much.

M

actually, I’m more oblivious than obvious

H

I’m obvious… Take my heartwood box out of my pocket. Shake it to get the clumps out. Tap some onto my thumbnail. Snuff into one nostril. Tap onto my thumbnail again. Snuff into other nostril. Put the snuffbox back into my pocket. Wipe excess from the mid-section of my face. Is that obvious enough?

W

I enjoy seeing people double-take if they see me take a pinch. If anybody was to ask what I’m taking, I would gladly explain.

N

I treat a public dinner the same as the comfort of home, I bring a nice jar and spoon with me, complete with hanky in pocket. I display jar and spoon comfortably on table, and politely, but publicly take my time with level spoonfuls, giving that deserved attention. If one notices and queries, I eagerly invite and explain. I’ve yet to deal with any scoffers, though they’re the most welcome. This being the U.S. and most people’s relation to such nasal actions, being obvious clears the air and lessens the stigmata, do it with class and turn your nose up to those ciggies. You’ll notice there wheels slowly turning, no need to wait for the light bulb.

D

I don’t hide it. If I go to the local pub my snuff box is right on the bar next to my drink. Some of you newer members might get a laugh or two out of this thread. http://www.snuffhouse.org/discussion/comment/216980

I make no effort to hide my snuff taking in a public environment. There is no shame to be had in it. I always have my snuffbox with me and set it near me if I’m in a café or eating. I’ll snuff whenever I have the urge, regardless of my situation.

H

@The_Persian_Slipper Right enough… Whenever I eat out at a restaurant I will set my snuffbox on the table for a few leasurly pinches after I finish my food and before I finish my coffee.

I’m on a college campus, and I use snuff fairly conspicuously. I don’t make a big show of it, but I don’t really care who’s watching. Most people don’t really notice or care. I’ve shown some of my friends, a few of whom have been tempted to try it and some of whom think it’s an odd and perhaps disgusting habit. Of course, then they go off and inhale smoke into their lungs . . .

F

I am not overtly obvious, but I usually snuff at the bar on the rare occasion these days that I can still afford a pint. Seldom anyone notices, even if I leave box or tin on the bar mat beside my pint. Twice been noticed - once by a young fellow in a town centre pub, who promptly engaged me in conversation, partook of a little himself, and thanked me profusely on his way out of the door for helping him finally discover a satisfying reason to quit smoking! The second occasion was in a local pub, where a couple of the regulars duly joined me, one (with some delight) stating that a reasonably-sized pinch (for a first-timer) of a mix of Black Coffee and one of the lighter toasts (either Gawith D Light or F&T HDT) had “a nicotine kick like smoking about 20 cigarettes at once; Man, that’s amazing! Are you sure it’s legal?”

V

I’m not obvious but either I’m not hiding. When I’m about to snuff I just take out my tin, pour some snuff on my fingers and sniff. No one ever looked askance at me, but when I was in Bulgary there were two quite different reactions. Some people on the street seemed to be laughing, but one barman on the contrary - I had regaled him and then he started to yell how amazing it is.

S

Can’t say that I am obvious but don’t go out of my way to hide. Frankly most people just ignore and the rest have blank stares.

S

When I take out my snuff box, I first offer it to the people around me. At first some people refuse but then after they see the enjoyment I get out of it their curiosity takes over and the next time I take a pinch they are likely to want a try. It’s only polite to offer and I feel that it is a nice way of introducing new people to the wonders of snuff.

T

When I’m in public I tend to put it on the back of my hand for fear that some one may thing I’m picking my nose. Only once did I have a bartender exclaim “that better be tobacco” When I showed him the snuff he mentioned that, yes one of the other bartenders takes snuff.

B

being shady makes it look shady. If I feel uncomfortable I offer it to people so I get the chance to explain before they can jump to conclusions.

P

I don’t think I’m very obvious at all, I’ve gotten “sneaky” over the years.
