Are there some people who just can't take snuff?

Hi,

This is my first post.  I had taken snuff in the early 80’s for a while but had not gotten into snuff again untill last month.  I’m getting my technicue done but their are times when the sneezing is NONE STOP!

My question is, are there some people who, try as they might, cannot take snuff?

Without going into details, yes there are people that can’t or shouldn’t snuff. I have heard of one other who had an extra sensitive sneeze mechanism. I’m not sure if he let that stop him. Generally speaking with moderate use sneezing becomes more rare. Also you should consider the types of snuff you are using. I can empathize if you must truly forsake snuffing.  I can’t drink any alcoholic beverages because I am an alcoholic.

Thanks Juxtaposer,  I’m finding “medicated” snuffs have been becoming hard for me to take.  The easiest snuff for me right now is “Viking Brown”

I found at first that everything made me sneeze but now it has become quite rare. The exception being menthol’s they make me sneeze like crazy and expect they always will, so I try not to use them too often. Maybe it’s worth experimenting with different grinds and moistures, flavours even to see if it’s a type worth avoiding rather than snuff as a whole

Yes, without a shadow of a doubt. My brother tried many times but could never get on with it - it just caused an enormous reaction, whatever he tried.

Try taking bigger pinches; that does tend to be a lot less irritating than small ones. It seems to be logical that small pinches - if you are worried about sneezing - would be the right way to start, actually the reverse is true.

Yeah this is totally subjective because I never, ever sneeze. I don’t know it’s because I smoke pipes for quite a long time…

I don’t also feel the need to clean my nose everytime I snuff too, commonly only in the end of the day.

I sneeze less then I did pre snuff. And when I started I sneezed after a few pinches and my nose would get clogged super easy. Now my nose is happier with snuff. Another variation on the bigger pinches (which makes me think it’s a doseage issue) is to take several really small pinches in a row which equals a big pinch. I find that is better for me, because it works like a big pinch but it doesn’t hurt as much when I have the occasional over sniff (which causes eyeball watering sinus burning). Also you’re body gets used to the snuff after a while. It also seems to clean up the sinuses which should reduce sneezing in the long run.

Anyone can get used to snuff I think. A good friend of mine used to sneeze every single time I gave him some. It took him months to finally appreciate it, only because I kept encouraging him to use it and kept giving him new snuffs to hold onto and try for a week. He loves snuff now and says he smokes a lot less because of it. He likes sweet fruity ones like ozona orange, cherry, rasppberry and poschl alpina, but he tried a variety of english ones and others too.

I spent a whole wondering if it just didn’t agree with me but doesn’t cause me any issues at all now

Thanks all for the advice.  I’m starting to think its a menthol thing with me, which is funny because for the first week they were the ones I liked, but as a cigar smoker I’m starting to like the natural tobacco ones more, like the Viking Brown I wrote about in an earlier post.

I love to sneeze; alas, it doesn’t happen as often as I would like.

Mouse, you say you “love to sneeze”, but I wonder how much you would “love” it if you sneezed and sneezed until your nose started bleeding?

@ausDave - I’m a regular snuffer and particularly like menthols, and now and again I get a sneezy bout or irritated nose. I find that a Benadryl allergy tablet tends to help.

I sneeze less with a couple of drinks in me.

Bigger pinches and/or coarse/moist snuffs can reduce sneezing. Sneezing is normal, but should abate with time. The key is persistance, and also not judging all snuffs by one or two types. There are drastic differences in some snuff styles as compared to any other form of tobacco.

Funny how we all differ…I sneeze more with course snuffs. Finer snuffs and toast, with the exception of the Dholakia toast, seldom cause me to sneeze.

I was considering trying this. I suffer from hay fever and wonder if I get a bit sniffly because of that. I might just take citirizine until I get better at it!

Sneezing is your nose saying get out. Sneezing is caused by irritation to the mucus membranes of the nose, releasing histamines that turn on trigeminal nerve network. I had had alergic reactions to substances that caused sneezing fits. Some snuff will make me sneeze most don’t.
