Are There Any Native American Snuffs?

This question came to me as a result of the PACT discussions but I didn’t want to derail those discussions for asking there and its occurred to me I’ve never seem or heard of a native American snuff, which seems odd to me, you’d really think they’d be making some. Anybody know of any?

Alex has a really nice post if you search under “Snuff Timeline.” Not really much on current Native American snuff, but some good links and information just the same.

Roberto Pane, a Franciscan friar, noted native Americans using snuff when he was a member of Columbus’s second voyage at the end of the fifteenth century. They were seen to take the snuff using a hollow cane about 10 inches long. There are no native American snuffs on the market, although I guess it’s possible that some is made somewhere on a very small scale. (source, Snuff and Snuff Boxes, McCausland)

I used to accumulate some in the bottom of sandwich ‘baggies’ years ago

Huh??? Z_2K explain if you can please.

@ Z-2K - good one buddy! lol

@whistirr, Sadly, it seems they are only dealing with tobacco for the money.

I don’t know of any Native American snuff, but I swear I used to see Mexican snuff being sold in Ciudad Juárez during the early 1990s. I was living in southern New Mexico at the time, and I used to go regularly to Juárez to eat and drink. (The chaos and craziness going on there today didn’t exist then.) I used to buy cigarettes and Cuban cigars there as well, as they were dirt cheap. You just had to make sure that you were buying from a legitimate shop and not street vendors and their knockoff merchandise. Anyway, one of the shops I used to frequent was a well-stocked, upper echelon tobacco store run by a talented tobacconist. In addition to the cigars, pipe tobacco and the like, he also had a good selection of snuff. I remember seeing some Brazilian brands along with the usual Wilsons of Sharrow and some German snuffs. Unfortunately I had zero interest in snuff then, so never really paid much attention to it. Still, I found it all fascinating and would look around at everything in that shop. I do remember that he sold a bone dry snuff that came in little bags, and I am 95% certain that it was manufactured in Mexico. I never tried it, but it looked to be a scotch-type snuff or maybe even a toast. I sure wish I could remember what the brand name was.

Not heard of Mexican snuff - there is certainly none on the market at the present time, so very intriguing.

It’s quite possible that it was a house blend or maybe even a regional brand. I wish I knew.
