Are Frederick Tranter connected to Wilsons?

And are they worth trying?

I’ve never tried them but I know that they are made by Wilson’s as a contract brand.  I believe the name is privately owned.

I didnt had them yet myself but i heard some nice notes on it. The whole brand appeals to me in terms of names and such. Will give it a go for sure. Glacier… mh…

mr nose seems to be a bit of a fredrick tranter head    judging by the whats in your nose thread

Since I have been mentioned by name, I will pipe in.

Frederic Tranter are made by Wilsons and to my nose seem to be very similar but a step up in quality.  Cotswold is one of my very favorite S.P.s.  I recently received their Beau Nash and was immediately reminded of Best Dark; It is now on my must have list.  The tins are the exact same as Wilsons and the snuff inside is similar to other Wilsons offerings, but the grinds seem more consistent and the flavors hit me as being smoother.  Overall they make some very nice English SP style snuffs.

I just got a tin of Cotswold. I was leased to find that it tasted exactly like Strasbourg, but it didn’t fly to the back of my throat. I haven’t tried any of their other snuffs but it would be great to know which ones are similar to the Wilson’s and which ones aren’t. They never  come out and say it in reviews that I’ve read on Mr. Snuff. I agree with Mr Nose

I’ve tried about 7 or 8 of them.  They all have WoS counterparts, but are not identical. In  the above mentioned comparison between Cotswold and Strasbourg for instance;  I find the Cotswold to have a bit more spice to it and a bit less flower, but otherwise the same.

As a whole I think the standard grind is a bit finer  with FT than it is with WoS.

Thanks for reminding me of the Beau Nash.  Very nice.  But I’ll need to finish this one before too long. All the plainer or SP Tranters snuffs are good imho.  I haven’t tried their florals or menthols.

Yep, as others have said, the snuff is made by WoS on behalf of FT, which is itself a B & M tobacconist based in Bath. Tranter also has branches in Oxford and Cambridge (probably the only remaining university towns where the odd student still takes snuff!)

I bought a tin of Beau Nash from the Oxford branch, which is located in a prime bit of real estate on the High Street, close to University College. While the snuff is lovely, I’m afraid I wasn’t as impressed with the store - the shelves were a bit empty and the snuff was only available in huge 25g WoS containers. I’ve decanted mine into some empty Toque tins (which I’m glad I saved!)

The Cambridge shop has been closed for several years, at least according to their website.

Ah! Perhaps the Oxford shop is headed the same way. Always sad when a B & M place like that goes. :frowning:
