I was just watching a snuff review, and the guy mentioned that poschl is micro coated in some sort of wax that keeps it fresh then dissolves. What’s the story behind this?
@Tobaccoman Paraffin oil. True about freshness, it’s the ingredient of all Poschl snuffs. It doesn’t dissolve, though.
Bernard, Arnold Andre (Swedish Match) and Rosinski use it, too, but they do make some snuffs without paraffin. Most Indian snuffs have similar ingredient (mineral oil).
If you wonder, how much paraffin and what else there, please check the Spreadsheet: https://snuffhouse.com/discussion/11859/spreadsheet-ingredients-of-poeschl-bernards-and-swedish-match
Thanks @volunge , really interesting.
My pleasure @Tobaccoman.
I understand the idea of snuff “dissolving” in the nose very well. When I started taking snuff, I even thought that nasal snuff was made in a process, probably similar to that of manufacturing instant coffee (talking about pre-internet times). I was sure that snuff dissolved (at least most part of it) in my nose. My pinches were smaller back then and for some reason the drip most of the time was minor.
Besides locking the original moisture in the particles of snuff, lubricative properties of paraffin enhances the drip, which might be annoying, but not the worst thing from the health point of view (facilitation of nose cleansing). On the other hand, the safety of paraffin oil use in snuff is queastionable. Swiss snuffmakers (A+S) claim they use glycerol as a humectant instead of the white oil (paraffin oil / vaseline oil), because white oil paralyses the ciliated epithelium on the mucous membranes. https://www.as-tabak.ch/faq.html
@volunge ah so it’s not some special substance it’s literally a petroleum product. I dunno how I feel about that. Do they use it in thier schlmzers? Funniest part of the article lol… Q: If the A + S Menthol Snuff is too strong for me, am I too weak? A: Yes.
It would seem, with a+s’s evidence, that other companies value freshness and shelf life over possible detriments. But how much of the evidence is there, maybe possibly marketing ploy? I mean I don’t put it past any corporation to boast there own product and simultaneously take down another. The guy in the video also mentioned how much parafin oil we actually consume in a year, but that is different then a nose product.
Yeah, that’s a good one
And yes, there are 15-18% of that stuff in schmalzlers. In old times clarified butter was used for that purpose, but due to relatively short shelf life it’s substituted with paraffin oil nowadays.
@volunge I’m sure I would have sniffed it back in the day, but I even hate the smell of butter on my lips after I eat something like a grilled cheese or lobster. Can’t imagine it in a snuff.
Back when I was trying all different snuffs before Sternecker Ungefettet was discontinued I would get it and add my own clarified butter or coconut oil in small batches. It was delicious and became the only greased snuff I would use. Butter in it is ridiculously delicious.
micro coated in some type of wax, man it’s almost like they’ll let any ole ignernt fool make a video for youtube. Yeah it’s got paraffin wax and nasal snuff does get partially suspended in ones nose. Though frankly it is something else in their snuff that hates my nose. Cause I’am fine with menthol and other paraffin micro coated snuffs. Sorry just had to make fun.
I would try the coconut oil, just not butter
