Any turks around ?

Hello ! I am trying to do sme research on the snuff habbit of old gentlemen in our village in Syria. I expected my father to be extremely surprised and shocked at my snuff habbit, but surprisingly he wasn’t. He told me that an old gentleman he knew used it, and had a metallic snuffbox. I suspect it has to do with the Ottoman empire period, but I might be wrong. For all the turks on the board , Salem! My family is Turkmen in Syria, and i wanted to ask if snuff use in Turkey had dwindled down or not. if so, when did people stop using snuff? Can you guys point me to a turkish snuffbox maker that I could order from ? Thanks!

I don’t know much about Turkish snuff use. However in a british documentary I once saw an old man in Turkey stuffing a pill of snuff up his nose. The impression I’ve gotten about snuff use in Turkey is that it is mainly old people that use it. I doubt anyone knows of any Turkish snuff box makers, however if you could find one it would be very appreciated, especialy if that makers was able to sell to over seas customers. If you do not mind a question for you then feel free to answer. What types of snuffs have you found in Syria especialy any types that we may not have heard of?

Sorry I couldn’t asnwer your question.

We had a member from Istanbul in the early days of this forum, other than that I don’t remember anyone announcing being from Turkey. I seem to remember This guy said he could find some Pöschl in the local shops, but not a lot of it. He beleived that a few older people used snuff, but made it themselves. He was gong to try and find some, but I don’t remember him getting back to us about it.

I remember that Turkish fella telling old state tobacco monopoly made snuff there but privatisation of industry ended snuff production, at least for some time.

Bob, I have no idea what types they used. I never seen them use it, but only my father has.

But when I showed him some toque , he said it looked just like it (lighter tobacco)!

Yes, I know them  very nice to meet you! Ever been to Iraq ? Its beautiful there (i went there when I was 5 , we ate fish from the Euphrades  )

I’d like to see the ruins of Babylon, I think they’re in Iraq, but I wouldn’t particularly like to go to a war zone. I’d like to go to quite a few places in the Middle East and Asia,(Petra, all the Holy land sites, Egypt etc.) only problem again is the bloody war zones!

Stefan

I hope it will calm down

I remember I was trying to find any historical documents on the snuff habit in Syria. The only thing I could find is the fact that there was a snuff manufactory in Aleppo.

“The Tobacco consumed at Aleppo, is brought from different parts of Syria, chiefly from Latachia. It is much milder than the American Tobacco, but at the same time so oily, that the pipe bowls become very soon unfit for use, and great care is requisite to keep the stem clean. A mixture of various sorts of Tobacco, is reckoned preserable to the simple production of one soil. The Turks in this respect are no less curious than the Europeans are in their choice of Snuff. Nothing is ever mixed with the Tobacco to scent it, but it is common to lay a bit of Aloes Wood, or of Ambergrife, upon the lighted Tobacco, which perfumes the whole apartment.”
