I am still new to snuff in general. I was wondering if there are any other snuffs out there that would be similar to Toque’s Berwick Brown. By similar I mean in grind, moisture, scent… I am open to just about anything since I haven’t tried a whole lot of snuff variety yet. Thanks.
I think the closest is Gawith Hoggarth Kendal Brown.
I’ve got two 10g. tins of Wilson’s Kendal Brown en route, which should be here on Saturday or Monday. I’ll post after giving it a try.
Similar snuffs (i.e. having a geranium, citrus and violet scent): F&T Kendal Brown and Wilsons Kendal Brown (but they are more finely ground). Also try Wilsons and F&T Princes which is dark, moist and coarse. The Kendal Browns of Gawith Hoggarth and Samuel Gawith are less floral, but have a good medium to coarse, leathery, peaty tobacco and a hint of citrus.
Yeah, SG’s Kendal Brown is probably the closest I’ve tasted. The F&T version of KB is completely different… blah.
I find that Wilson’s Dark Best is a very close cousin to Toque’s BB (in all accounts- grind, moisture, and scent)
I’d agree with Snifs and add that Wilson’s Brunswick also shares some similarities with Berwick Brown.
Thanks for all the help I am going to throw some of those in my next order.
The thought has never before occurred to me, but I suppose that McChrystal’s does not make a Kendal Brown or anything close to it. That is rather odd for an English mill with such an extensive line.
Generally the companies that make a KB have been doing so for a hundred years or more (considerably more sometimes) and I think it just gets to be part of their own tradition. McC’s started in menthol and SP type grinds and just never got round to it for whatever reason
Berwick Brown is such a superb snuff that I certainly won’t look for something similar.
