I’m Australian and would like to know if there are any other snuff takers here from Australia? When I fist joined this site, just over 2 years ago, I found one but are there others? Australia has such stupid harsh laws on tobacco, snuff was banned from sale in shops here back in 1991, however one can still buy it from overseas (for now). Snuff is the safest way of enjoying tobacco and there is no second hand smoke. Anyway if your in Australia let me know.
I’m from Queensland ausDave, I grow my own native & not so native baccies if your keen for seed.
lunecat, interesting I started school in 1973.

Leaves, thanks for the post. I’ll keep it in mind.
I’m in Sydney ausDave. I wouldn’t say I’m a full time snuffer but lately I’ve been partaking a lot more since snus became an ultra expensive habit.

Understand where you’re coming from. I’m now a full time snuffer after cigars and pipe tobacco just became far too expensive. I had first tried snuff in about 1982.
Roderick, thanks for the info, sorry I am unable to open that document from my computer. Also, are you in Australia?
Roderick is in the UK ausDave. You may have even bought snuff from him in the course of your snuffing If he were to sell snuff in Oz I reckon the going rate for a 10g tin would be around 8 to 10 AUD. I smoke a pipe also and find that it isn’t too bad cost wise when buying pipe tobacco from O/S. Buying it in Aus is a killer.
I live in South Australia. Looking for other Australian snuffers who would be interested in trading snuffs that weren’t, as they say “up to snuff” in their books. I have been buying quite a lot of 9g tap boxes of all sorts trying to find those perfect ones, although of course there are quite a few I wasn’t a huge fan of or couldn’t see myself trying again. All the snuffs I’m willing to trade have been opened once for 2 small pinches then completely taped airtight and kept fresh in the freezer. I’m hoping to find someone within Australia so the costs of postage don’t go through the roof. If you are interested in trading, please don’t hesitate to message me.
Add me to the list of Aussie snuffers Birko
Awesome, Awesome, lets try and keep this thread active. For our fellow Australians
I am on Sunshine Coast Queensland ,been full time snuffer for a couple of years, bloody annoying haveing to get from UK,don’t always get taxed, but just got done for 100 gms Touqe Original and50 gms Spannish Gem cost me $ 128 absolutely ridiculous .
Suntoucher, yeah I know what you mean, it’d be much easier if they could sell it here in Aus. I was under the impression it was around $320-$450 a kg, although I have friends who have been taxed much more. Fortunately I haven’t been taxed yet, although I believe my luck will run out Ive just made 2 large orders on the same day. We’ll see.
@Roderick In regards to customs stopping an order due to a tax, if you told them you did not want the order would they send it back to you or destroy it? Or would we pay customs the shipping fee to send it back to you?
On a different note. Besides the cost to you and your company it wouldn’t be such a bad thing if they decided to take legal action or if you could put in an injunction of some kind on the constant varying tax. Not only would it bring knowledge and awareness that there is a much safer alternative and a ridiculously easier way to stop smoking, other than the Nicabate patches the government supplies at a ridiculous cost. It would especially let smokers know that snuff tobacco is something that actually exists, even the people working in our specialist stores do not even know what snuff tobacco is. Every smoker I’ve introduced it to has loved the stuff and when I tell them the price they almost fall of their seats.
The issue in Australia is that probably around 95% of the smokers don’t know that it is legal to order tobacco online, and we don’t have the public awareness or the history of snuff use for the vast majority of smokers to know what it is.
I have considered writing to my local MP who has no issue going up against multi conglomerate businesses, a few years ago he went up against the government to try and stop the tax exemption status of scientology and its recognition as a religion, even he knew a lot of our politicians subscribed to scientology beliefs. He has no issue fighting the fight for the people that get the short straw. I would like to know your opinion of this?
Roderick you are doing all of us Aussy snuffers a great service and I’m sure I can speak for all of us when I say we really appreciate it!
As you probably know there’s a huge untapped market here in Aus and all it would take is to give that stone a nudge and it will just cascade from there.
Or do you think it is better the be flying under the radar, so the government doesn’t ban the importation of snuff and/or put a ridiculous tax on the product, either on importation or banning the importation then selling it only in Australia with a very hefty price tag. Any of these wouldn’t really surprise me unless they are legally bound not to. Either way I’d be very interested in knowing your opinion?
@Roderick thanks for your interest ,I will try this next time I order, I was led to believe that if you say you don’t want it they just destroy it. I was tempted to but I really like your snuff. As said above hardly anyone knows what snuff is in this Country, I was introduced to it as a kid buy pipe smoking Grandfather, I think it may of been Hedges or very similar blew my head off,he thought it hilarious at the time, old bugger, but never forgot snuff,so years latter I thought I’d give it a go to stop smoking ciggies it great stuff, just too much choice. Love the stuff.
@Suntoucher Ok well one of my orders came through without getting stopped, although unfortunately my Toque order was stopped. You either need to pay the tax or the package will be destroyed, you cannot make them send it back. You also cant decide if you want to keep some of it and pay the tax, you either need to pay for it all or it all will be destroyed. Unfortunately it wasn’t worth the money and time to reorder so I decided to pay the $97.35 on 115g of tobacco.
The tax rate in Australia on tobacco products is $763.2 per kg
I hope my other Australian snuffers are luckier than me
Update, the main reasons why I decided to pay the ridiculous tax sum was more of a mathematical decision for me. The main contributing factors where since I’m running low on snuff and have quit cigarettes, I would have to wait two weeks for the next order to arrive. If I went back to cigarettes over those two weeks I would have to pay upwards of $120 to sustain my nicotine habit. I probablly have enough snuff at the moment to last me a little less than a week, and within my toque order along with other products I perchaced a 50g bag of Rustica which is upwards of 3 times the strength, so that would be equivilant to 150g of snuff. I believe my order was around the $70 mark so I would be saving $30 if the replacement came through without being stopped. I would have seriously considered doing this if I wasn’t running low. I have a suspicion that the bulk bag of Rustica may have been the culprit in drawing too many eyes, where the smaller tins could be lollys, chocolate, hair product or anything else that comes in tins those shapes.
If I was well stocked up with snuff I would not have paid the tax on principle, In the scheme of things I am very proud of being able to kick the cigarettes and absolutely do not want to start again, I guess in the end I am alittle pissed at the government but very happy that I will get my order tomorrow, beggars cant be choosers.
@Roderick Yes by all means send it to them, I agree NZ has the right idea and I’m tired of the government increasing tax beyond 70% which is advised by the health administration to reduce cigarette consumption. Beyond 70% tax, studies show that there is no significant difference. At the moment it is at 76.3% and it will only increase from there. When you increase the price on tax beyond this point it is seriously morally unethical for the people in our situation helping the government reduce costs to our health care system by using safer alternatives and it prevents others from following suit.
@Roderick Should I rewrite the message for you leaving out the part about the Rustica catching the eyes of customs where the tins go unnoticed.
My guess would be to leave that part out. In pretty sure Rodrick would leave that part out.
Yeah your right, we don’t want them using it to stop more packages rather than encouraging a change in policy.
Roderick maybe try not to bluntly acknowledge our corrupt government lackeys directly this time ahaha I’ve always wanted to speak my mind to them, its almost like telling your shitty boss to F#*k off.
Now I can honestly tell somebody otherwise when they tell me all tobacco companies are evil
Well that’s just great. Australia Post lost my package, supposedly it was marked as delivered today but I didn’t receive anything not even a card. So now Australia Post is doing an investigation into where the package has gone which will take 10 business days so 2 weeks, great! I’m just going to order some more toque from Mrsnuff, so that will most likely get here first. agh I really wanted that Rustica and finally try Spanish Gem.
The issue is now what to do… try and make some homemade snuff lol I’m almost out of options besides cigarettes, might try vaping some tobacco geez AUSTRALIAS GREAT AINT IT.
$97.35 for the tax basically down the toilet I could have bought a ton of snuff for that and have it arrive sooner.
That sucks. Sorry to hear that. Hope they find it. Could it have possibly been stolen somehow?
Its possible although we live in a pretty good neighborhood, if it was stolen the only person really that could have was the delivery man. Went I received the tax notice I believe the contents were labels as imported cigars, I’ll have to wait and see what comes of the investigation. Even if the package is missing I doubt they will refund the cost of the package with the tax included
Good news, my order finally got here, turns out it wasn’t lost. Somebody at Australia post used the same tracking/process number that another package also was given. Well I’m happy as a tornado in a trailer park :) going to be a good day! Happy Snuffing
Hi, I am in Melbourne and looking for some snuff. I ran out of my personal stock. Please let me know if anyone around would have some I could acquire locally.
Hello! I am in Sydney. I have just started taking snuff yesterday
Before ordering I phoned Customs to check — any snuffing tobacco above 50g total will be taxed heavily.
— I do not know, and dread to find out, if this means that I can order in 50g amounts at whatever frequency I like or…
@Aida welcome to SnuffHouse. I believe it is very dependent on who you get at customs whether they decide to tax you or not, I have been taxed one time before on under 50g of snuff although most of my orders are within the 100-250g range. One technique I found that works quite well some of the time, if you buy certain snuffs like for example butterscotch, raspberry, licorice, vanilla, chocolate food scented snuffs they seem to get past easier, I have had two of these orders stopped by customs and let through without tax, they probably assumed it was candy.
You will have to decide whether it is worth your while to decline the tax, quite often if you refuse the tax and just make a new order you will save quite a lot of money. For example unfortunately one of my last orders of 115g was stopped and they were asking $97.35 for Duty and GST, I paid around $60 for the order. I decided to pay the tax due to me running out of my supply and not wanting to get back on the dreaded cigarettes, otherwise I would have refused the tax in a heartbeat. Even if my snuff does get stopped it works out a hell of a lot cheaper for me than even the cheapist cigarretes.
I wouldn’t dwell on the tax, you have a lot higher chance of it getting through then them taxing you, I read somewhere it averages out around 1/10 gets stopped into Australia by customs.
I am in Sydney Australia. I am a regular snuff user. I started off with Bernard Fichtennadel 10g but i found heavy sneezing and severe blocked nose with this brand. I used it for 2 years finally choosing Gawith 10grams Apricot flavour in 2015. I have used it since March 2015. I had no issues in importing this brand from the UK but my package i ordered from snuffhouse.co.uk on the 17th of February didnt turn up. The customs havent written to me either asking for anything. I ordered a another package on the 13th of March via tracked and signed for postage and that has arrived here in Sydney but only the devil knows when i will get it. I have run out of all my stock and now on my knees. since 4 days i have snuffed a grain. If customs need money…take the damn thing, just let the snuff go. I am going to call them tomorrow morning. Its pathetic that in Australia we dont have snuff shops. Its crazy. All of Europe have them but not here. Madness.
@Adrian I am in Adelaide and for what it is worth this is my experience of importing for personal use. All of my packages (about 8 in total from various snuff sellers in the US and UK) have made it through except one in the last three months.
The one that got seized by Customs, I paid about $40AUD in tax on it so it doubled in price overall. IIRC the duty is $770AUD per kilo. On average I figured if I get caught with that frequency then I should be ok. I generally order anywhere up to 100 gms at a time to the same address.
With my packages I have found that they can take anywhere up to a month to get here. Why I don’t know, particularly as they are not getting taken by Customs. On the positive side I have had packages arrive after two weeks. I figure if I keep a steady ordering of small amounts up I can generally have enough of a supply on hand to keep me going.
@Aida welcome and good luck with Customs.

Hi, just joined this group.
Been using Swedish snus for a few years but only been using snuff for about a month.
Live in Perth.
Andrew.
So, 77 cents a gram on ALL tobacco products? And that’s applied whether or not it’s imported or grown locally? It adds up to more than a dollar a cigarette. I’m surprised that more people don’t use snuff. With those outrageous taxes, it’s by far the cheapest form of tobacco, considering that even if you’re a pig, you probably won’t use more than five grams a day, which weighs the same as two or three cigarettes. Maybe that’s why they discourage it. It would lose them revenue. On the plus side, it means that there’s hardly any difference in the price between the cheapest economy bargain snuff and the most expensive artisan snuff - you have to add the 77 cents regardless. I guess you’d want to go with ultra dry high nic snuffs to get your money’s worth.
@JarkartaBox it works to be around 83c Tax plus 10%GST, so all up around the 90c mark in tax. The tax is on all purchase tobacco, Australia does not grow tobacco anymore it is all imported. Its also illegal for us to grow tobacco and each plant will cost you around $80,000 AUD in fines. Last time I checked it was around $30 for a pack of cigarretes or around $40 for 30g of rolling tobacco.
@Aamon, last time I was there, I remember buying some pipe tobacco. I rationed myself to a pipe a day, it came out at something like almost ten bucks a bowl. Luckily I managed to bring in the 50 gram limit of Dholakia White, so I had something to snuff. But yes, outrageous. No wonder there’s a black market for illegal tobacco now.
