Hello everyone, I was wondering if there were any snuff review sites still functioning. From reading old posts here it seems like there were a couple a few years ago, but I can’t find anything that is still up and running today (aside from a few reviews at MrSnuff). Best!
I downloaded both of the Snuff Review sites a couple years ago. I could give you and anyone else that wanted one a copy of those if you’d like one. In order to do that I might need some help finding a file hosting site that will also allow people to download files from it.
@CmosPixels That would be great! I did a quick search and found a file hosting site called file dropper that seemed to work good for me. All you have to do is upload the file and then you can just share a web link. Maybe this would be suitable? Thanks.
@HBurlingameIII there’s an excellent review site by a chap who is a member here; http://ermtony.pbworks.com/w/page/14871562/My%20Snuff%20Stash
@HBurlingameIII Here’s the download link for the old version of snuffreviews.com. To use it unzip the folder and then click on the HTML.doc that says, “ Index.” Once you do that you’ll get a page that says, “Index of locally available projects:.” In the upper left hand corner of that page there’s a link that says, “Snuff Reviews 5-27-12 click on that and the site will open. http://www.filedropper.com/theoldsnuffreviews5-27-12 Here’s the download link for the newer version of snuffreviews.com this one is from 2- 14-14. To use it unzip the folder and click on the “Index.doc” and the site will automatically open for you. http://www.filedropper.com/thenewsnuffreviews2-14-14
Thank you so much @CmosPixels, I really appreciate it! And thanks @Franknsnuff too, that site looks great!
@HBurlingameIII You’re welcome.
@CmosPixels You sir are a gentleman and a scholar and you deserve some sort of award for services rendered to the snuff community, I have downloaded both the files and tested them and everything seems to work. Not that I doubted that you had done a fine job but I attempted to do the same a while ago while the Snuff reviews site was still up and running but for some reason most of the pages never got downloaded. Many, many thanks for your splendid work.
@chris You’re welcome and thank you for the kind words.
Yep, good work @CmosPixels!
@Franknsnuff Thank you.
Thank you–Thank you–Thank you!
Just now downloaded it to my mac. It works great. I had relied on the wayback machine but it was pretty bad. But now all is well and we have access once again to this great snuff review database. Not having snuff reviews.com was a real loss and I feel very fortunate to have it back. Thanks again @CmosPixels!
@fredh You’re welcome.
Many thanks @CmosPixels ! I had a local copy of the site downloaded, but it had some files (and reviews) missing. This seems to be complete. Excellent! (BTW, The file you click is index. html , not .doc)
@Jari_T You’re welcome. One thing you might notice about the old version of snuffreviews.com is the lack of reviews for Silver Dollar products. It says there are two reviews for Silver Dollar, but when you click on it there aren’t any. The reason for that is that Al never got around to actually adding the snuffs so that they could be reviewed.

Well when I tried to open index.html with peazip, I only got a message that the file cant be found in a google crome browser
@tboyer The index page doesn’t need to be extracted. The only thing that does is the folder itself. Simply click on the index.html file and you should be in business.
Can someone re-upload this 2 files. I think they expired. Thank you. theoldsnuffreviews5-27-12 thenewsnuffreviews2-14-14

Here ya go. The Old Snuff Reviews The New Snuff Reviews
Mr. Snuff has been accepting reviews of their products- while its not a “true” review site, its a good reference from some snuff takers.
busy slowly copying them onto my site here https://snuffreviews.wordpress.com.
I think this will help to expand the experience @ Snuffhouse. Just left simple review as test to see how well it can work. Easy easy, make it role!
@CmosPixels thank you! Got them today! This is a very important resource. Some of the best noses in the business did a lot of work on those reviews. I used the site constantly from the beginning and was shocked when it disappeared (at least twice).
That would be awesome Roderick.
@roderick agreed but forums have the same issue and they mostly survive somehow. The problem as I understood it with snuffreviews is that he had some personal issues come up in his life and just shut down for some period. I don’t know what happened the second time. The main thing is having more than one trustworthy person who can access it so if something goes wrong the site can be moved to another hosting service etc.
https://snuffreviews.wordpress.com is still active, and people are finally posting their thoughts. I like the open format.
Agreed with @Hitsuzen
https://snuffreviews.wordpress.com someone has been posting my old reviews on this site as anonymous and I am not happy with that. Old reviews are worthless No.1 is because batches change and the new batch could be totally horrible like fubar grunt or black coffee. No.2 No one asked my permission.No 3. I feel only current reviews should be posted because I personally would not want to be misled and receive a snuff of sub quality. ~X(
@basement_shaman = Joseph McKenna? Mind = blown
Snuff Reviews group on facebook
@Shavasana Elaborate your mind blowned experience .
@basement_shaman My mind has been churning a thick black smoke and is starting to drip out my ears and on to my shirt collar a little…
No really, it’s only that I’ve read your thoughts on snuff here (as basement shaman) for a long time as well as many of your reviews on the Mr Snuff site (as Joseph McKenna) without ever realizing it was the same person.
I suppose “mind = blown” is a bit hyperbolic.
@Shavasana When I first started to explore snuff other than scotches. I was really lost when reviewers would describe snuff to other snuffs i had not tried. So I tried to give my thoughts on a snuff and if it was similar I would point it out.
Knowledge I collected over the decades is worthless unless it is shared. I rather be part of the solution than the problem. I like to live in an ideal world but I exist in this one. Joseph McKenna is the name my parents gave me, basement_shaman is the being I have evolved into.
I really don’t understand the anonymity for having a user name in a gentleman like forum as Shuffhouse. But being worldly I know there are plenty of wackos that would put you in their crosshairs if you ruffled their feathers.
As for reviews you wouldn’t want to buy a user’s manual for a RCA 1960 tube tv when you have a RCA 2015 flat screen. So why would you trust a review that is 4 to 5 years old ? I am going to have to go through a few hundred reviews and ask @Oliver to delete them. I noticed MrSnuff had lost a few of mine but also see the same descriptions that were up 6-7 years ago.
basement_shaman No old reviews have been posted for some time. If you send me the link to the page where your review is and point out which one exactly it is, i’ll gladly delete them.
IMO, old reviews are hardly “worthless”. I enjoy reading people’s experiences with various products and I do trust that most posted reviews are valid for whomever posted them at the time. (Although with some sites like Yelp and Amazon, this is coming more into question.)
When I started smoking cigars, pipes (and now snuff), I counted on other people’s reviews to help guide me. I knew that while my personal experience would likely be different, it helped me select those products that were well regarded for quality and consistency. Over time, review sites also helped pinpoint users with similar tastes to my own - which then helped me try more selections that stood a much better chance of complimenting my own tastes vs. some random new choice.
I don’t have long term experience in the snuff world, but I do with cigars (20 years) … and I’ve often been amazed at how consistent many cigar makers can get their blends from year to year. For snuff I would think that while the base tobacco does have yearly differences, the added flavorings do not. So any variations would really only be apparent in those blends with minimal or no additives.
I don’t think the RCA TV manual analogy above is very valid. Although I believe if I used pages from both the 1960 and 2015 manuals as rolling paper, the smoking experiences would likely be similar.
I’m sure the manufacturers stick to the same recipes.
Ok go buy a 500 gram can of Fubar Grunt. That change 3 times or more.And for the worst. It originally had a nice coconutish quality to it .Then another batch was cigarish the third smell of a stinky ashtray.Have no clue of the current batch. This is why old reviews are crap
I think older reviews definitely need to be taken with a grain of salt. With some brands, they would probably still be fairly accurate. With others, they may miss the mark due to the passage of time. But, from an archival standpoint, they are still interesting to read. I think you just have to factor in that grain of salt.
Mark
Again, I think all reviews are worthwhile. I’m still somewhat of a new guy to this particular tobacco variant and I’m still learning so more info is a good thing. Obviously with some snuff brands / blends there are significant variations from year to year or perhaps even batch to batch. So quality and consistency will be a huge concern. If the totality of reviews for the blend would show this variation, then I could take this into account and either give weight to only recent reviews or more likely just discount the blend entirely as a possible crap shoot. By deleting all old reviews, I wouldn’t really see that the blend changes significantly from year to year, unless the reviewer specifically mentioned it.
BTW, I would never purchase 500g of a snuff brand new to me. So far it’s always been 10g initially and then 25g the second time around.
The general consensus has always been to use the old reviews. The fact of the matter is they are there to stay.
Being such a small community with limited resources to explore it would have been a shame to have lost such great work.
@Roderick - Yes, I was being a bit silly with my comment. It’s simply that (what I thought were) the TWO people from whom I’d read the best advice regarding snuffs turned out to be ONE in the same.
Now that I write it out, I suppose a brighter bulb than myself would’ve unsurprised.
