i noticed awhile back that my nose dont run anynmore when i use snuff regardless of how far it gets up there. i just read that your nose needs to run to be able to better smell snuff. could this be the reason why my ability to smell snuffs is impaired? the snuff just drys up after about 3 -5 minutes of being in there. any ideas on how to fix this? i know my nose should run but it doesnt it seems to be rather dry in there all the time now
I have found that when all else fails, adding xylitol into the equation increases the flow of mucus from the nose. I have used Xylitol nasal spray to irrigate my nose after a binge of snuffing, bit it could be used before, to get the sinuses properly wetted. http://www.amazon.com/Xlear-Sinus-Nasal-Spray-1-5/dp/B000M4W2E6/ I have also gotten granulated Xylitol, to dissolve in water to add to a rehydration of snuff, and found that it helped with the problem of future drying and nasal dryness. Xylitol is hydrophilic, so it will absorb humidity from the air and use it to moisten snuff, much the way Propylene Glycol is used to keep pipe tobacco from drying out.
Fubar Bohica will solve that problem right away. Your nose will be running like a faucet And your eyes will be tearing like a wet baby and your neighbors will call the police from all the loud cursing. It has a delicious warm inviting chocolate scent and satan’s embers from the bottom of his fork >:) If that don’t work you’re doomed .
I seem to often have just the opposite problem. I get so stuffed up I cannot smell much at all. Doesn’t keep me from enjoying many of the benefits of snuff but I have to say that when it gets like this I tend to just use up the ones I generally do not care for. I find that if I use menthols, I clear up amazingly - I love it - for about 3 minutes - then mu airways slam shut like a jail door and well, it’s all over for about 2 days. Bummer. Meanwhile, back to the original topic, for me, I have the best ‘smell factor’ when my nose is not running. We all differ.
ive just accepted the fact that my nose will never work right and there is nothing i can do it i posted a massive trade or sell list in the bazzar my next order will probably be my last for a long time
What sort of snuff are you taking? Many find prolonged use of mentholated snuff congests. Dry snuff can have the same effect. Coarser moister snuffs such as Wilson’s Princes do not congest but clear and refresh the nose without the rebound effect.
for me its mainly wilsons and toque
I made my living with my sense of smell and taste. When those senses got overworked I took a break from snuff and every other thing that made them uncomfortable. Only a few days, a netti pot or two and some saline nasal spray and all was well. Menthol, camphor and eucalyptus all tend to have a rebound congestion effect on me, but mint doesn’t. Go figure.
“for me its mainly wilsons and toque” Most of the Wilsons and Toque snuffs are demigros and dry. I visited both Sharrow and Westbrook Mills in Sheffield in the 1980’s when tours were advertised and know a bit about preparation. Sieved flour is kept in barrels in the Dressed Snuff Store before the addition of varied scents to create different products. Irrespective of flavouring the flour used in most of Wilson’s snuffs, for example, is the same. Typically only 12% is moisture. My nose gets dry and I feel congested if I take much of the drier finer snuffs and my sense of smell is diminished. I don’t have that problem at all with coarse moist snuff and I’m a heavy user.
Out of curiosity, how much snuff goes into a “heavy user”? I feel like I’ve been using a lot recently (a lot more than ever at least) and when I sift through these forums, I feel like I hardly have any intake.
I take it easy with snuff or I burn out on it. Use for enjoyment of all the diversity of them. Some I will over indulge, but never over due. Not a stranger to nicotine but that’s not the main use for it. IMO.
it is my main source of nicotine right now although i made the make f getting loose snus very messy but next chance i get im going to get some portioned snuff-

I find most Wilsons and Toque to be quite drying, and use that to my advantage. Firstly, hydration is key - hydration of yourself. Nicotine is a diuretic, and blowing your nose gets rid of even more fluids. If you’re not peeing enough, or it’s not pale enough, you’re not getting enough fluids so you’re body isn’t going to waste it on snot if it doesn’t have to. I find coarser snuffs, particularly Sam Gawith course snuffs get the old nasal juices flowing nicely. If i’m having to wipe my nose a bit too frequently though, or I feel the urge to blow my nose “too early” because by nose is starting to gush, a pinch of a Wilsons or Toque standard grind snuff on top as a second layer often does the job. It adds a second layer of flavouring, and deals with the excess moisture, which allows me to avoid blowing it out till it’s all “cooked”
imm going to wait two weeks before snuffing again to make sure my nose gets better hopefully
