I’m getting pretty good at taking snuff and I owe all thanks to several forum members who have taught me the proper way to sniff. While snuffing, I no longer feel the snuff going down into my lungs and no longer cough. HOWEVER, a few minutes after snuffing, I feel the urge to spit and when I do, I notice a little snuff in my saliva, which tells me that ‘some’ is still making its way down my throat. So my question for you guys, do you notice this too??? Is it possible to actually sniff TOO lightly? The only other thing I can think of is that I am sniffing so lightly, so this is perhaps a reason some particles bypass the front of my nose and go directly to my throat. Any ideas?? As always, thank you so much for your responses, had it not been for this site, I probably would have given up on snuff after my first try.
It took me a long time to learn how to sniff so it doesn’t get in the throat or too far back. I still have trouble with American Scotches and I’ve been snuffing for 15 years. I actually only used High Dry Toast for a long time and when I found this site I started going back to try other snuffs again. I’ve found that each snuff, for me, requires an idiosyncratic technique. Some I have no problems with, but it took me a while to get the sniff for Toque right. Everybody has a different setup in their nose which changes the airflow and where the snuff goes. Some people have little problem and others have to be very careful or it goes straight to the lungs. It won’t hurt you if all its doing is getting in your throat and over time you’ll get the nuances of the sniff down so it doesn’t happen anymore.
i get this also most times i take a pinch ! I cant work out the diff between a snuff or sniff ? Is their a diff if so what ? Thanks everyone
no worries, i think its safe to say, it happens to all of us. only time it’s really unpleasant for me is if i take too large of a pinch of spanish jewel as it has the tendancy to burn a bit.
If you are using very fine dry snuff, like the US ones or Irish Toasts, you have to extremely creful as they are incredibly penetrating, the simple and best description of how to take these, whether you pinch or use the back of the hand method is to breathe them in rather than sniff or snort them in
I’d certainly irrigate (i.e. the nose gargle) on a regular basis. I always give myself a good nose gargle in the shower, I think that helps keeping away the sore throats… snuffster is right, you need to sniff the american drys a little more carefully. I also use one troutstroker’s techniques where you block part of your nostril with your thumb to increase turbulence and it seems to help keep it from drifting all the way to the back of the throat.
I sympathise zzedo, I quite often find I get ‘drips’ of snuff tainted mucus in the back of my throat usually 15-20 mins after snuffing. I find it quite irritating and usually have to have a drink of something flavoured to get rid of the taste but I think its just one of the down sides to snuffing. Each habit has a down side and with snuff its a bit of drip down the throat after useage. I just try to ignore it these days…
With a lot of the american sweet scotches, the drip or drain down the back of throat is actually somewhat enjoyable.
If you have drippy sinuses this can happen even if you don’t take snuff too far back. It happens to me sometimes. I just drink something and the problem goes away.
I think it is better to suck and spit it out, you don’t want it in you system.
I won’t touch that one with a ten foot pole!
Snuff Head, we’re a family friendly site.
sorry
LOL guys!!! This reminds me of another thread on this site but I guess it’s best not to post the link!
I don’t know about the actual quality of Dholakia but it feels as pure as anything else and the mercury/lead issue would need some proof before I took it too seriously. I don’t doubt it happens in countries with less than stringent production regulations but Dholakia are investing heavily in the western market at the moment and I would be surprised if their export snuff is adulterated, they also make the snuff for the kwitwithsnuff website which is a US concern and I can’t imagine that there were not some pretty exacting production meetings. The sparrow cool, if used in a bullet, should be slowly breathed in not sharply sniffed, btw, that will avoid it getting anywhere near the back of the throat. Simple physics - if the inhalation is gentle enough it can’t get beyond the nose. Breathe very, very gently as it is one of the finest snuffs out there.
I think your pretty safe with Dholakia. They have been given an ISO 9001:2000 ISO Certificate of Compliance
ISO is a standards compliance organization. Being compliant with ISO just means you use what are generally accepted manufacturing processes. It is not a guarantee of health or quality (unless you believe quality comes from being compliant with standards). ISO does not address health issues.
Your right, we dont grow any tobacco in the UK, not on any industrial scale anyway
Much pipe and cigar and snuff tobacco is grown in Africa. I don’t know what’s in it, but I sure do like it.
I find that when I relax in a reclined position, with my head bent backwards, I will have a post nasal drip down my throat if I do so after snuffing. And sometimes it can be really bad. But it’s inevitable that the snuff will mix with mucus and eventually find it’s way down one’s throat. Happens to me quite often, some times I swallow, other times I spit it out. No problem.
DHOLAKIA also received the green light from the British authorities with an “A” grading which means that it has been accepted as being free from dangerous ingredients. In the past insurers would not prvide insurance cover on imports from DHOLALIA. Since the ISO Certificate was issued and customs gave the thumbs up for importing, the insurers also changed their view. All DHOLAKIA snuufs will thus be available in the UK soon.
Excellent news Pieter, my daily routine now centres exclusively on Dholakia and Toquwe.
thank you pieter! in general it is belief in west world that anythig manufactured in INDIA is of low quality.people have no idea how much INDIA had progressed in each sector. i think some members on this forum has problem with india and indian manufacturing goods. as said in this discussion ,no english tobacco is grown, all imported from other country…mercury and lead could be in those also…???
thank you Mr.snuff…
Many fine products come from countries with lax standards. I had a friend who worked in the inscense industry much of his product came from countries with out strong standards of quality. Much of the stuff that could be bought in such places was made with ingrdients that wouldn’t pass muster however everything he sold would mostly exceed legal requirments in stricter countries and at the worst pass. It isn’t like every company sinks to the lowest especialy when dealing in global markets.
Namrata is right. Yeah, I mean come on, India produces, what? half the world’s tea? Tea is a highly luxurious agricultural procuct like tobacco and there are many sophisticated tea drinkers (myself included) out there whose demanding standards for purity basically cause the market to self regulate. I would rest easy, folks, that barring accidents that might spoil an occasional batch (which could happen anywhere) your tobacco is going to be clean.
Well I may dislike some of the new snuffs but I have not the slightest fear that they are not produced to the highest and purest standards
