Announcing the SnuffWiki + Exclusive Competition!

It is with great excitement that today I announce to you the official launch of a brand-new and potentially invaluable snuff-related resource: SnuffWiki (www.SnuffWiki.com). SnuffWiki is the first and currently only snuff-related encyclopaedia. The aim of the site is to eventually document everything to do with the wonderful world of snuff - from it’s rich history, to manufacturers past and present, to snuff equipment, as well as other general areas of importance. It is a non-profit collaboration between snuff experts and enthusiasts worldwide.

Now, in order to celebrate the launch of SnuffWiki we have decided to run a competition in partnership with Mr. Snuff. We are giving away over $200 in prizes to the lucky winners, so this is definitely an opportunity not to miss out on!

To enter the contest, all that is required is for you to head over to www.SnuffWiki.com and help contribute - it’s as simple as that. You can help by creating new articles, expanding existing ones, and adding media. All efforts, whether large or small, are equally appreciated. Below you’ll even find a few ideas and examples to help you get started:

  • You could add new articles about:a snuff manufacturer, a particular snuff itself, snuff equipment, snuff books, snuff history…just to name a few.
  • You could expand existing articles. Many are quite short and incomplete, just there in order to provide a starting point for the wiki. Any additional or more in-depth information is a bonus.
  • You could scan and upload old and historical snuff-related leaflets, documents, pamphlets etc to the wiki.
  • You could even take photos of snuff tins, upload said photos to the wiki, and add them to the corresponding snuff article.

The prizes are to be awarded as follows:

The closing date for this competition is Saturday 14th April, 2012 and the winners are to be announced here on the 16th of the same month. We hope that the running of this contest will encourage the growth of SnuffWiki as well as ultimately help it in its mission to become both a useful and credible snuff-related resource.

I would really love to hear your thoughts and comments in regards to this project and so will actively be monitoring this thread. This is also the place to ask any questions, so if you have any please do not hesitate to ask away.

Small Print: Entry to the competition is restricted to one entry per person. Maximum one prize per person. There is no cash alternative to any prize. Note that you must have an account with Mr. Snuff in order to get the points applied, so if you haven’t already then go sign up for a free account over at www.MrSnuff.com. All SnuffWiki staff, Mr. Snuff staff, and their immediate families are hereby disqualified from the competition. Winners will be given 28 days to claim their prize, if we don’t hear back from them within that time period then a new winner will be selected to replace them. And last but by no means least, do have fun!

Fantastic!  What a great idea!  I can’t come close to contributing any amount close to the majority on this site … but will certainly enjoy reading.

Great Idea , just hopped over and it looks very good.Not sure how you add Snuffs to the Alphabetical lists? Great resource for Snuffers.

Thanks very much for the kind comments everyone, glad to see that there’s interest in this project :slight_smile: The Wiki has been in the works for a year or two now and so I must admit that I am very excited to finally release it! In regards to adding a Snuff article to the “List of Snuffs” category @Wingcamnut, simply add [[Category:Snuffs]] at the very bottom of the article - that’ll do the trick.

I’m not sure I’m ok with this being a commercial site. The beauty of something like wikipedia, which this site seems to emulate is its liberty from commercial influence.

@Snuffwiki./ Geoff .sorry completely lost on this adding a snuff to the categories thing, trying to access the page to add in a snuff, I seem to get everything but the subpage of B where I wanted to add a new snuff?

@Gentleman I understand your position and empathize. I won’t condemn you for it. Its your site and you an do as you wish with it. I certainly appreciate the labor and financial resources you have commited to the project. I can even get behind a start-up boost from a commercial sponsor. I respect that you have suffecient checks on commercial influence but havng a permanent sidebar banner for advertisers is going too far for me though to personally be part of it. But that’s my own conscience, I wish you best of luck. I’d much rather see it as becoming member supported, and possibly co-operatively owned, thereas preventing a sudden death such as happend to Snuffreviews.

Love this-have got stuck in this morning and added a ton of snuffs. I’ll keep working on in this week, am laid up in bed with 'flu so have little else to do!

I tried about 20 times to get the word recognition thing right, no luck. Could it be improved?

I’ve added a category ‘snuff styles’ which currently contains articles on ‘schmalzer’, ‘SP’ and ‘medicated’. Feel free to correct errors. Other suggestions are ‘rappee’ ‘scotch’ and ‘toast’ if anyone is interested!

Added Snuff Brands Category as Quit with snuff is not a manufacturer. Id like help in populating it as it will be more helpful for a lot of users than the manufacturers page when it comes to all the contract brands that dholakia produces.

Also, would like links added to home page for Snuff Brands and Snuff Types.


Anyone want to help me clean up the list of snuffs so that the manufacturers name or initials comes first so that the list isnt so useless?

Firstly, thanks for donating your time and money to do this.

Secondly, don’t hold back on implementing that navigation – lacking that and some proper templates/exemplars for each category discourages me and I’m sure others from contributing more.

Just to clear up some things for anyone, the best format for the alphabetical snuff list is : snuff (brand) with a basic intro for the snuff so people could find a snuff they’ve heard of without having to find out the company first, or vice versa. With the company name first it’s harder to find the snuff you’re looking for.

For e.g, Berwick Brown (Toque)

I added a load but they’ve just got the basics so far so people can edit them if they want or add to them.

Brands are from the companies - e.g, Toque(rather than Toque Snuff Ltd), Wilsons of Sharrow, Dholakia, She, Blast( those 3 not single companies but belonging to Dhalakia Pvt Ltd), etc

Manafacturers are -  Full company names for example instead of 6 Photo it’s Lachhman Dass Amar Nath (A.V)

Also, for snuff brands or manufacturers, you can edit and copy paste for example : this and fill in the parts.

But obviously there’s only so much info out there to add.

@Gentleman Do you think it’s possible to add a company/brand category where it lists a company, you click on it, and then there is a list of snuffs by them much like the format of online snuff stores? Am I right in thinking it’s simply done by adding a page say called Snuffs by Company, then [[Category:Snuffs by Company]] under each sub page then listing them as bullet points?

Also, does every category made automatically end up in alphabetical order, because I think some pages would look better without it, for e.g a Snuff Media page would look better with just a normal list.

There’s about 15 or so of them in the usernames http://www.snuffwiki.com/Special:UncategorisedPages. I think only mods can delete though I don’t know.

@Theatre what I did, and what I think will be most simple, is just add to the wiki for the brand. So click snuff brands, then click the brand, edit:

etc

Whats nice about this, is you can add a second part for snuffs out of production as well. It seems to me to be a lot simpler than making extra pages.


Because Toque has such an extensive offering I made a table for them and had to make pages for all of the snuffs that were missing. I still need someone to add the silver dollar snuffs to the page, and hopefully someone will add images for the toque pages that do not have them yet.
