Yes- somebody’s (can’t make it out) Scotch snuff. Love the chap sitting next to the petrol pump (right) with the cigarette!
Ah yes @insufflator, the good ol’ days when men could smoke right next to the gas pumps. The snuff, I think it’s Carharts Sweet Scotch Snuff. That “C” is their brand logo.
the colorist was guessing, no doubt. The “C” should be red not green. The second “C”, mostly behind the post, is still grey.
Great picture. I love all those old advertisements. Any idea where or when it was taken?
More info @onefortheroad It seems to have been taken in July, 1939. This store is located at 75 Wheelers Church Road, North Carolina. The original photo is by Dorothea Lange
Is that a chicken in the wooden cage under the porch and the left?
i think it may be a chicken…or a shoe.
thats a really cool picture
and here it is today

Oh yeah look at that, did you see that sign for Dental Snuff?
I was wondering if anyone would spot it!
So they stopped selling Carhart’s at one point and switched to Dental? I wish I could convince my local to do that.
Go figure, only about a 20 minute drive from my house - I’ll have to check it out one of these days - will post pictures if I do!
There are 2 snuff signs carharts and dental snuff
About an hour or so from me…
