This at first seems quite like Polar Prise, however upon close comparison there are notable differences. This one has somewhat less menthol and the herbal element of Polar Prise, but it has something else, camphor perhaps instead of the eucalyptus? that Polar Prise has. Its got quite a sweet rich cake like nature to it as well, making it downright delicious. I can’t say it goes as far as halb-schmalzler Zwiefacher in the sweet direction, but it comes as close as one can in a non halb-schmalzler German menthol snuff. Yes, I think I would gladly choose this over Polar Prise from now on. I have learned since this initial review, that Amostrinha has a long history, and at once time was unmentholated. Its somewhat hard to imagine as the menthol in the modern version is very prominent, but that fruit cake flavor certainly could stand on its own. Rating: 4/5 Style: modernized (mentholated) traditional medicated German snuff Grind: Demigros Moisture: medium (oil moistened)
Agreed this is wonderful snuff, not even close enough to polar prise to directly compare. This has distinct smokey notes to it, oak maybe
Yes, this snuff is quite amazing. One of my favorites.
Just had my first toot of this yesterday, also my first time trying a Bernard snuff. I was surprised to see it looking lighter, finer, and drier than I’d expected when I’d first tapped it out, but I know that this is not a schmaltzer snuff. I really couldn’t have anticipated the scent that was in store for me. It was an almost disorienting range of scents: menthol, smoke, pine, pastry, maybe a touch of salt, and yes even something like, well, ham. The scents battled a bit in my nose and the post-nasal drip hit me hard and fast, which tempered my enjoyment a little, but perhaps I’d just sniffed a bit too gregariously. I wonder if the ham scent is just the mix of sugar/salt/smoke. The way some have compared Bernard snuffs to a three course meal seemed spot on. I was watching a documentary about Kraftwerk at the time, which seemed appropriately Germanic All in all a rather intense experience, but not unpleasant. I’m looking forward to dipping back into this one now that I have a better idea of what to expect. [Edit- FWIW, I am totally in love with the tap box due to it’s simple, classic design and the somewhat strangely worded admonishment to “take this excellent tobacco for the nose only” :)]
Tried this again, and I guess maybe it isn’t for me? Seems very similar to Zweifacher (which I love) if the scents refused to work together and just clashed & clashed. Pine needle slams menthol with a jab, ham has got smoke in a piledriver! I joke, but snuffing this gives me a strange sensation of my nasal cavities dilating smaller, but not congesting. Anyone else feel this? Without a doubt, the experience is interesting. I’ll still give it a another shot some time.
Totally different beast than zweifacher
