I just received my first tin of NTSU (yellow top) last week, and as warned it had a very strong ammonia scent. Before snuffing it I let it air out for a day or two. It still has a mild ammonia scent. Does anyone know *why* there’s an ammonia scent to it??
Because the snuff is fresh. Ammonia is a sign of fresh snuff. Stefan
I actually prefer my snuff to have that ammonia smell. I never understood why some people let their snuff air out by leaving it open all day. After opening the tin enough times, it’s bound to air out anyway. Why rush a good thing?
I dont like the ammonia smell myself. But usually you only need to air the snuff for an hour or two. As far as I know, tobacco leaf contains ammonia naturally. When ground finely into snuff, it is released hence the stink.
NTSU is best taken straight out of the container, damp and absolutely reeking of ammonia. Ammonia is an alkali that gives it the big hit by making it absorb quicker into the system. Cigraette manufacturers do if for the same reason, though to a lesser extent. When it dries out it looses its hitting power. By the time you get to the bottom of the container you will have lost most of the ammonia anyway. Absolutely love NTSU straight out of the contanier, ammonia and all. To me ,its useless without it. If you find the ammonia too much, switch to NTSU menthol (yellow container, green top) less ammonia and tastes like pepperment for some obscure reason, but still loads of niconeen. NTSU is not taken for its subtile flavour, Its a pure 100% nicoteen delivery system, with one hell of a nic hit.
NTSU has the most staying power of any snuff I’ve tried. The nic hit seems to just go on and on.
I’m totally thinking about re-ammoniating some of my older powders! Anybody have any tricks?
I don’t *like* the ammonia scent per se, but I value it as a mesure of freshness and a reminder of some high alkalinity. Ntsu…wow, It must have something added to it. Need to break one out of the cellar soon. I think I kind of hold my breath partly when taking Ntsu, so as not to cough on the fumes. I woud not air it more than an hour or two. You’ll lose too much that you can’t put back in. Re-ammoniating? You’re on your own, man. I wouldn’t mess with cleaning supply ammonia. That burns your lungs.
“Ammonia increases the pungent perfume of other bodies; it is always present in the air of privies, and perfumers expose their musk, and other odorous articles, to that air to increase their scent.” From: The Household Encyclopedia Or try the indirect method with spirits of ammonia or ammonium bicarbonate. The bicarbonate is sold in Indian groceries as a leavening agent.
