I’ve noticed a pattern with snuffs which smell of ammonia and those which don’t, with British snuffs: Toque tins often smell of ammonia, bulk never does SG tins never noticed ammonia, bulk no ammonia McC’s tins no ammonia, bulk no ammonia Wilson’s tins no ammonia, bulk absolutely reeks the strongest of ammonia, every single flavour except iht22 I’m not saying this is a hard and fast rule but it’s definitely a pattern. Weird huh!?
I always get it if the snuff is fresh. Even in tins. Toque, McC, WoS, makes no difference. True I can’t remember getting it from toast though.
How strange. Maybe it’s because I didn’t start using my bulk until I’d nearly finished using up all my tins so a lot of them had been sitting in jars a year or two. But still, all my SG bulk has been bought this year and none of it has smelt of ammonia. Not one. I wonder if mysmokingshop keeps a stock of SG bulk or SG keep a stock of bulk whereas Wilson’s make fresh on demand. If SG or mysmokingshop keep bulk in stock for a while before they get sold, that would explain why they don’t smell of ammonia. But then, why don’t my 600g bulk orders of Toques smell of ammonia when the tins do? I’ve got nearly the whole toque range in 600g bulk, don’t recall any ammonia with any of them but frequently with the tins. Confused!
My bulk Toques all smell of ammonia. They were all 100g. I transferred them all to peanut butter jars, still smell of ammonia, and some are over three years old. I never gave it much thought, but I guess I don’t always notice it.
The Toques I’ve bought in bulk have been 100g too and they definitely smell of ammonia. I find the tins usually do as well, but not always. The seven or so SG tins I have don’t and neither do the two or three WoS tins I have.
Maybe I just don’t notice the ammonia unless it’s really pungent which makes me worry for my nose smelling abilities. If I can’t smell low levels of ammonia what other aromas is my nose missing? A bit concerned now.
