Hello, Everyone. I’m brand new here and from the San Diego, California area. I have dipped way back from the Happy Days spearmint era until now. Far, FAR too many years to freely put the exact number on. I have recently made a big switch over to nasal snuff, and although I’m still learning how to do it without causing painful nasal/sinus injury to myself, but on the whole seriously enjoying so far. I now only have one dip of Copenhagen in the morning before I get ready for work, and the rest of the day, I am only using snuff. My gums are thanking me and from what I’ve read, it does seem like a “safer” alternative. That being said, I visited Mrsnuff.com and have made a huge order, mostly to mitigate the shipping from the UK, but also to try as many different types to see what I like best. I have always kept my Copenhagen and other chews in the fridge to keep them fresh, and have seen this or the freezer also recommended for snuff. That’s what I have been doing for the past month, but I had an idea yesterday that I wanted to get advice on. Since it seems that the main thing with snuff is to keep it in a cool, dry environment, my idea was to keep it in a clean military ammo can, such as something that held 50 cal or 5.56 ammo. They are airtight, conveniently sized, sturdy and can be stored anywhere, so extreme heat can be avoided. I think I would only store sealed cans in this, to avoid any cross mixing of the scents. Has anyone used this storage method and what are your opinions of it? Thanks, Bill
Firstly, welcome aboard. I keep mine in drawers and cupboards to be honest. Loose tins upstairs in a couple of drawers, small bail top jars in a drawer downstairs, and in the cupboard below lives the bulk jars. I have had a couple of the moister snuffs form what appeared to be mould, but otherwise all I’ve ever suffered is some snuff drying out a bit. Add some drops of distilled water, and within 24 hours or so it’s good to go again. By all means try the ammo tin, I can’t envisage any problems with it, but try other methods too for comparison. We’d be very interested to hear what you find works best for you personally.
Just an afterthought… snuff has been around a couple of hundred years longer than refrigeration, and was often stored in wooden barrels which would have robbed the snuff of moisture and “ghosted” if used for more than one snuff. Probably exchanged a bit of scent with the barrels either side too. I reckon sealed tins in an airtight ammo box in a sensible place is going to be many times better that the options they had in the days of old.
I bought an ammo can filled with 91 $1.00 cigars recently. It is doing what it is supposed to do–keeping them from drying out.
Air tight :-B Calisnuffer Welcome. There are plenty of threads on storage here. After opening you may concider air thight glass jars. Baby food jars work just fine.
Thanks for the great advice, Gents! I’ll give it a shot and see how it works!
