Ok, i did read up from other posts but it still did not answer my questions. I have some Toque coming in the mail and some other stuff which i am anxiously awaiting but i have to settle on American Snuff until then. I picked some Dental Sweet Snuff and on the can it has the warning labels you would expect to be on Dipping snuff like copenhagen and skoal and so on. My question is am I ok to use it in the nose. I see old people around here using a spoon and puttin it in the lip as dippers do but never sniffing it. And is it safe to do so. I find my nose gets a lil dried out so i go into the bathroom and take a kleenex and notice that little flakes still remain in my nasal cavity after blowing my nose. Even as many as 2 days after using there are still flakes of snuff in my nose. Is this normal?
I saying that even after blowing my nose if I take a kleenex and try to make sure i get it all out of my nose the kleenex will have small clumps of tobacco bits on it. Im not snorting it. Im just gently sniffing it and it still doesnt come out after blowing my nose. Im not an idiot, im just new to using nasal snuffs
Grim, BB1 is right that the American snuffs can be used both ways and your fine to use them in the nose. They are really my preferred snuff. But the one you have, Dental is one of the lightest as far as scent goes. I usually go for the plain scotch varieties like Levi Garrett, Rooster etc. rather than sweet. But if you like the sweet you might want to try ones like society or honey bee, these have a real nice sweetness to them. And can really be enjoyed in the mouth or nose. Navy sweet is a real nice snuff as well. As far as the nose is concerned it is normal what your experiencing. Your taking a dry dust & introducing it to the moisture of your nose. It will absorb moisture, clump up & stick to the inside of nose & take a little work to get it all out depending on how much you pack up your nose between blows. Your nose will clean itself out better if your blowing your nose when it starts to run rather than when its dry, not much will be left in there because the moisture your blowing out helps wash out the snuff. Most of us here do use either water, saline spray or a neti pot to clean out the nose good. I use a saline spray then blow once or twice a day & a neti pot 1-2x a week to get a real good cleaning.
Sounds like a lot of work just to enjoy tobacco having to use nasal sprays and nasal enemas May not be my cup of tea if theres all of that cleansing work to be done.
well, I take that back. my wifes great aunt used nasal snuff her whole life and lived to be 102 and my wife said she used it all the time and reeked of tobacco. She said her aunt never blew her nose either i think im just paranoid
Its not necessary, just a personal choice. Your fine just to blow the nose & leave it at that. And like I mentioned, if you wait till your nose is a little runny, you will have a much better result when you blow the nose. WHat sounds like is happening is that your taking snuff & letting it dry out in there & getting hard packed like an adobe brick before you clean the nose out.
i think the build up helps trap nastiness outside of your lungs and throat. keeping you from being sick.
Grim, Ive never used anything at all and Ive been taking snuff for 20 odd years. I personally couldn’t be bothered with any of that, I just blow as and when I need to.
Personally i don’t think you have anything to worry about as the nose is designed to catch and hold foreign partials - but if you are still concerned the easiest way is just to cup some water in your hand when you shower or wash before bed etc then snuff it up your nose and blow out, nose clean, job done, takes seconds, you could always finish off with a little pinch of menthol, just to open up the tubes mind.
One thing you may want to consider with american scotches, and in particular Bruton, is that they have around 500 times the amount of carcinogenic compounds as Wilson’s. Swedish Match sponsored a study (where Swedish match came out along with english tobaccos as very safe) that showed that american dip is actually relatively safe, too, but that the studies that showed it to be as dangerous as smoking were including american dry snuffs that were 100 times more carcinogenic that even Copehagen, the worst of the snuffs in terms of carcinogens. If anyone is interested, I could dig up the study. African snuffs were even worse than american dry snuffs. There was no mention of any other places in the world.
Yeah we’ve had this discussion on TSNA’s many times here. Some posts below. But the american scotches that are high are the ones made by UST such as the Rooster, Bruton, Red Seal etc. The rest of scotch snuffs by other companies are much much much much lower. The other scotches like the Navy & Dental are very low… I wonder what wilsons they compared to which american snuff. Did they pick out something light like gold label against rooster or did they really compare something like HDT against Dental? I bet if you compare a Wilsons using dark fired tobacco against an american scotch, they would be very close. Because that is where you get the high levels is in the dark fired tobaccos which are popular in scotches & hdt’s. Their tests are like comparing apples to oranges. You need to compare to equal varieties. Here is the chart. TSNA Chart. Snuff Dangers TSNA Nitrosamines
Thanks Troutstroker. Glad not to have to avoid all american scotches!

I enjoy picking and snuff bugers. No one can tell unless they are really watching you whether your snuffing or picking either. I’ll always have some tobacco in so I usually pick right before a snuff. It helps to keep you nose hairs trimmed as well. It’s amazing how you can casually take a pinch in front of people without them even knowing it. Especially the ones that don’t even know about snuff.
So 6.0 & 10.0 tsna levels for red seal & bruton. Yeah I see that now on the report here, TSNA report. So that would mean a lot of the other american snuffs would actually test lower than either bruton or red seal. Tobacco companies have been working to lower the tsna levels, so they must have done something right.
