The protonated and unprotonated nicotine levels of various American dry snuff are available on google books if you put in ‘unprotonated nicotine Bruton’ as your search terms. It came up as second from the top for me, but that might vary. I’d post the URL but it’s about four lines long and I’m not clever enough to use tinyurl. The study also contains sales figures of dry snuff versus moist snuff in the U.S.–there’s still a lot of dry snuff being sold, even if it is on the decline. I’ve been experimenting with dipping some scotches, and I finally understand why some people opt for dry snuff: it’s far easier to hide and you don’t spit as much. It’s embarrassing that I didn’t figure that out earlier. Women in the U.S. tended to prefer dry snuff because it was a way to get nicotine without having a big bulge in their lip or cheek. I find that if I pour a moderate amount in, it stays in place pretty well. I can’t say I feel the nicotine, even with Rooster, but at least it makes sense now. I’m not planning to make a habit of it though, as apparently dry snuff is loaded with tobacco-specific nitrosamines, a cancer-causing agent. Check out the difference in parts per million compared to moist snuff: http://www.healthline.com/blogs/smoking\_cessation/2007/08/carcinogens-from-smoking-and-smokeless.html No wonder a study found that dry snuff led to much higher cancer rates.
I can snort it, but I can put snuff in my mouth. I tried it once…ONCE ! Z_2k
@ Mike B. or anybody that may know: “I’m not planning to make a habit of it though, as apparently dry snuff is loaded with tobacco-specific nitrosamines, a cancer-causing agent. Check out the difference in parts per million compared to moist snuff” “No wonder a study found that dry snuff led to much higher cancer rates.” Mike do you know if this applys to snuffing the dry snuff or only dipping?
@ jimmyc: the study on cancer rates was only in regards to dipping dry snuff. Off the cuff I’d say that the high presence of carcinogenic agents in dry snuff isn’t great news for people who think that snuffing it in the nose doesn’t ever cause cancer. My own suspicion, for what little it’s worth, is that nasal use is less likely to cause cancer because the nose is very good at dealing with foreign materials–it creates mucous, etc., to take the materials away from the nose and force the person to blow his/her nose thus removing the carcinogenic agent. When one dips the dry snuff, it stays against the gum for half an hour or however long the user wants it there. Even with nasal use there would still be absorption of some nitrosamines though, so if you are really worried about cancer I would stay away from tobacco-based snuff. Snuffing is harm reduction; it isn’t risk-free. Some people will disagree with this and maybe there have been studies that were unable to show any link between long-term snuff use and cancer, but I haven’t read them and I’m not sure they used American snuff (which may or may not be higher in tobacco-specific nitrosamines).
Thanks for the response Mike B. I agree with your opinion. I guess the point is, snuffing is probably the safest form of tobacco use. Definitely better than smoking. And maybe not a bad idea to use dry snuff in moderation. Also lets face it what is risk free?
Nothing. It seems everything I enjoy, be it snuff, snus, dip, chew, and foods, they all have some negative side effect, be it obesity/hypertension, stuffy nose, or gum recession.
And then they, and I’m not sure who they is, tells you something is bad for you and few years later they change their mind. Example: butter/margerine, wine, chocolate etc.
The way I see it is, everyone is going to die, everything is bad for you, you might as well enjoy everything you want because nothing apparently is safe anymore. -Kidnapper
The most dangerous thing ever is life. Some people use hard drugs and it doesn’t kill them (Keith Richards) and smoke cigarettes like candy (Thinking of Keith again), and eat candy as a dietary staple and it doesn’t kill them. Shit we should be studying keith richards instead of tobacco. That might safe some lifes.
@bob double LOL!
Think of how bland life would be if the safty nazis win.
