The full name as read off the ancient logo on the bottle is: Levi Garrett & Sons Tobacco Scotch & Rappee Snuff. Well, there is nothing even remotely rappee about this snuff. I think the “rappee” in the name is due to tradition. I’m sure they once produced a proper rappee when snufftaking was more common in the US. This is a scotch snuff, and one of the best ones made. It might be the oldest one as well. These brown plastic (once glass) bottles hold the fine, strong snuff. Its not too smokey as most of the ones from competitor USST are. Neither does it have that bitterness that they do. It also has a bit more in natural flavor going for it than most of the Swisher/Helme scotches. Its very smooth as well. Some confusion has arisen in regards to this and W.E. Garrett. They are, though, in fact one and the same snuff. The brown bottle label is more of a tradition than a name. W.E. Garrett is sold in cardboard tubes, which really do not do it justice. If you believe they taste different, its more likely a storage issue. This snuff packs a nice punch and its very fine and dry. Beginners should be wary of it.

This review is necessarily in two parts. The first part relates to some vintage LG I was sent. The second part is about fresh LG in the 5.58 oz plastic jar. There really is quite a difference between them! 1. 40 year old vintage Levi Garrett turned out to be not only super-fine, dry and dusty, but also stale and fairly flavourless, except for a crypt-like mustiness. On rehydrating with water and orange peel the mustiness is much reduced and the palatability greatly increased, though it still lacks the expected smokiness. It has taken on the orange peel scent which sits very nicely with the scotch. I can see that’s a combination worth experimenting with. I would be very interested to get hold of some fresh Levi Garrett, or at least some well-stored vintage Levi Garrett so that I can present a better review. No doubt when that happens we will have another 5 star scotch but for now two stars is as much as I can give it. 2. The fresh LG is a different beast altogether. It’s smoky, smooth and very tasty with quite a punch of a nicotine hit. Although it is reckoned to be identical to the W.E. Garrett, differing only in the size of the containers used, the LG does seem to me to have a more ‘rounded’ flavour, which I think must come from it being in the larger container. Just a theory and I’m probably wrong about that! Definitely five stars now!

I’ve been looking for a scotch to compliment my SP’s and HDT’s and I’ve found it! This is the best scotch I’ve had the privilege to put in my nose. Texture is smooth and fluffy, it’s dry but so easy to sniff. It feels almost buttery between my fingers. The taste and aroma is TOBACCO with a soft BBQ flavour somewhere in the background. Long lasting aroma and a small pinch goes a long way. No runny nose or a lot of blowing and the nicotine blast is out of this world. This is a perfect snuff.

Having a glass jar full of old snuff is quite a thrill. I can only imagine the feelings of someone who buys in bulk could be similar. The best thing is that this snuff is good. Not a beginners snuff for sure. I’ve grown some hair on my chest since I’ve had it. Pure tobacco joy it is. It gets in your hair, your eyes, though your sinuses into your ears, and usually in your lungs. I don’t mind choking a bit, as long as my nose gets coated. It’s worth it.

I’ve just received some circa 1966 LG. As US snuffs are still rare in the UK - its only in the last year or so that its become easy to order them online - I have no frame of reference and so came to this with no expectations either way. Well, this is just a gem of a snuff, pretty much everything I ever look for. As Trout says ‘It satisfies’. It satisfies with great smoky, rich flavour. It satisfies with the silky texture and beautiful golden colouring and it satisfies with a good, decent nicotine kick. Its also what I would call a ‘clean’ snuff - no congestion, no drip, no need to blow five minutes after each pinch. Great, great snuff- the only thing that stops me giving a sixth star is that there isn’t one. Dear departed snuff blenders of the swinging sixties - thanks gentlemen.

Another bone dry selection from Conwood that rivals the class leader Rooster in body and flavor. While not quite the boost as the big R, the BBQ is deeper and more complex in my humble opinion. Beginners might wanna remain seated. An excellent Scotch on par with it’s little brother W.E. Garrett (little brother, or one in the same?). If there’s any difference, they coulda fooled me; same color and flavor along with the same boost and finish. Sometimes I almost think I can detect a slight difference but surely could not differentiate in a blind test. Great stuff regardless and almost… just a hair short in appeal, as desirable as the still King of the Roost, the rOOster (just like W.E. :O). A solid, and very careful, four and a half snorts for Levi.

Great. It’s the king of the American Scotches. I prefer the High Dry Toasts, but if the charred wood scent is your thing, this is the best. Has more character than any of the others.

To me this snuff is very similar to W. E. scotch. Not sure I can tell to much of a difference, Very good though and recommend everybody try it. Fine, dry, smokey, With a little something extra again a huge nicotine hit. Get some now.

This is an outstanding American scotch snuff, and may be replacing Square as my favorite as I start to become more acquainted with it. I recently received a generous package of this snuff from Troutstroker, and have been quite taken by it after the first pinch. It is complex for an AmericanScotch, and makes most others Scotch snuffs seem almost generic by comparison. There are undertones that I haven’t quite placed yet that really awaken the senses. I really think the fermentation of this snuff is what sets it apart from the rest. Deep, dark slightly charred mysterious undertones. Nice nicotene boost. I put it on the “Must Try” list of American Scotch snuffs. Scotch lovers owe it to themselves to pick this one up.

Dry, with a strong dark taste. Has similar notes picked up with most scotch snuffs but with a deeper fermentation. A little more complex with a touch of charred oak. This is my favorite American snuff. And like all American snuffs this can be enjoyed both in the nose & the mouth. Best way to describe this one is ‘it satisfies’! |

Does anyone know when they stopped making the 5.58oz scotch & rappee plastic bottles? I found like 10 bottles at a small grocery store and they look like they have been there for years.
