American Scotch Scarcity and Age and Potency

I’ve been looking for some time for these across the internet to no avail and they are just totally absent from at least the Western United States and I actually miss them a bit more now that they are no-where to be found. what do they say? Distance makes the heart grow fonder? Is the whole thing just a marketing ploy to increase demand? I’m kind of a conspiracy enthusiast.

As it is, I found one on eBay but the lid looks a little rusty. I hope I’m not setting myself up for a hepatitis case. I’m going to decant it carefully but now I regret buying it because everytime I take a pinch, Im gonna think: it could be spoiled.

I’m going to assume the product is far outdated. I’m obviously not worried about losing moisture but I am interested to know the shelf life of nicotine. I don’t know the science and just wondering how much nicotine would survive the years? would it still be good.? If anybody knows a vendor that still sells these (not wholesale), please let me know. I think Ive done enough research trying to find these on my own, I figured I’d ask for help from the Snuff House community. Thank you!

I’m not a scientist, but I think the nicotine will still be there. My experience with scotches is that when they get old they lose a lot of their smokiness. When I first got some Starr, for example, I thought it was a rare plain scented tobacco without the hickory smoke. When Mr Snuff got some a few years ago, it was a new batch with new warnings and it was as smoky as any of them. So I wonder if a lot of the distinctions between scotches that people used to insist on here were mostly a function of freshness. RR Mills and Navy plain were genuinely different as they seemed more cocoa scented than hickory smoke.

Let me know if you ever find some Dental plain and I’ll trade for an unopened Starr.

Thanks. I’ll keep an eye out. I hope it still has that hickory smoke scent and the tin isnt badly rusted since this is old stock with the metal lid and toilet paper tube. I just am at a loss where to get these besides the sell and trade posts here. that’ll be my next stop I guess. thanks for the reply. I’ll post a picture when it arrives.

Well, I just received the tin of WEG scotch plain from eBay. I haven’t opened it yet following is picture of front and back. There’s no date stamped on it for expiration and I wanted to know if anyone could determine the age by looking at it. There’s the beginnings of some rust spots on the what I assume to be aluminum lid but no worse than what Ive grown to expect from the Indian snuffs. I decanted WE into tin because it had rust.

I almost don’t want to open it because its a cool looking piece of history, but, its also a thing to enjoy and not to relegate it to a shelf and forgotten about.

I just opened the tin(cardboard tube) and it was clumpy and alot of the smokiness has gone. Other than that, I think the nicotine content is preserved enough.

I think the freshness is down to the containers, the plasic ones that have a good seal seem to hold up fine for me.

Yeah, I’m going to run it through a flour sieve, then decant it into a proper tin. I guess its still ok to use unless if I see rust on the inside, its going into the bin.

Ppl sell old scotch tins as a collectors item, not for consumption.

You won’t find dry snuff for sale online anywhere in the U.S., due to the pact law, internet sales are illegal. That’s why you’ll only find old ass tins on ebay.

I would suggest calling your local tobacco brick and mortar stores, and asking for “sniff snuff”, lol. I have asked for nasal snuff and been told they didn’t sell it. Then ask same store for sniff snuff and they have that for sale. In person purchases are completely legal over the counter.

I’ll have to grab an extra tin next time I go. Till then call your local tobacco stores, I finally found a store that sold only one kind of the stuff, sniff snuff, lol. Pretty sure their are Scotch snuffs online from the Isle Of Mann available.

I just found my tin of Ralphs Dry Scotch Snuff, that I got from the store, it’s got a lot of kick in the Nic department.

I’ve already asked my local tobacconist to carry it but he won’t. It’s not profitable and it takes up precious shelf space. There used to be a B&M smoke shop that carried Garrett plain and Garrett sweet but no more.

I’m just going to do without I suppose. I’m not looking for it all over the place anymore. I’m over it not going to let it turn into an obsession lol.

I do apologize, it took an obsession on my part to finally find the stuff.
I don’t know why the hell it’s so hard to find, there is a store called Mars Cigars like 2-3 hours away from me that carry a huge variety of snuff, mostly European by snuffs but he has quite a few scotches.
I almost think that the cigarette lobbyists had fought to get the snuff off the shelves, becouse nasal snuff won’t give you any cancer, and would quickly gain popularity due to that fact. In Europe they literally had to remove cancer warnings from the snuff package, due to the complete lack of proof supporting the cancer causing theory.
The warning labels in Europe changed to
“This product is addictive and is bad for your health”

I think it’s because it’s sold from an Indian Reservation.

12ct-1.15oz tins for $338.oo?, sounds perfectly reasonable to me!

If it’s a Native American Reservation, I guess we deserve prices like that, tbh.

Yeah, the First Nation Senaca People’s really upped the prices recently.

But, it might be worth it if ya love the stuff to pieces and cant find it anywhere else.

It appears W.E. Garrett & Sons products are now made by the American Snuff Co. I can not access this site due to geoblocking.

Bruton, Carhart, Standard, Rooster and Red Seal are all listed as current products by US Smokeless Tobacco Co.

Seems odd that these are almost impossible to buy anywhere in the US. If they’re being produced, it would stand to reason that they’re being sold to someone.

Seems that the market for these are in the South Eastern US. I’m on the other side of the country in Western US, California and they are nowhere and none of the tobacco shops want to carry it just for me. I probably would buy a whole case (12x) if the price was reasonable because 338 USD is not reasonable. But the tobacconist doesn’t want to bother with it I suppose,

Are the stocked widely in the south east? If so it might be worth taking a weekend break somewhere in the region.

What to buy the factory, or just a majority hold of the stock?
