Hello to all! I am a very new snuffer, been at it for about three weeks now in order to kick cigarettes. So far I’ve been very successful, haven’t had a cig for two weeks and only smoke a pipe if the smoke cravings get really bad. As a new guy, I’ve found that American scotches have been the most difficult, but at the same time they are my favorites in terms of strength and flavor. So if you’re new and tend to over-sniff like me, check out W.E. Garrett & Sons Sweet. I’ve found that it’s very easy to sniff lightly, doesn’t burn, and has a nice nic kick to it. -Jackie
Tube Rose & American Peach are also mild when it comes to throat hits. I am sure you will notice that there are some that like the big blast of snuff by using a straw or bullet.
Starr
For a smoky American scotch, I find Square to be the easiest to take. Starr is excellent but doesn’t have the smoky flavour–it’s VERY plain. Checkerberry and Maccoboy are even easier to take and have a lot of nicotine.
Yes, but Checkerberry and Maccoboy are not scotches. Also they are hard to find!
I have a can of Honey Bee that I haven’t opened yet but heard it has great balance
A friend of mine is off to America soon and has offered to bring back some snuff for me, so this thread is definitely of interest - any suggestions for that? I’m not keen on menthol, but most other types I like, from toasts to heavier snuffs like WoS Best Dark and Brunswick, to the coarser ground snuffs such as Molen’s Pomapdour and Bon Bon, and SG McCombie. What are American snuffs like compared to those?
@Xander: yeah, I forgot to add that Checkerberry and Maccoboy are not scotches. They’re not hard to find–they’re both available from Mr. Snuff–but it’s hard to find a single can if you don’t want to invest in at least 3 cans and the price may be steep compared to what you’d pay at a Food Lion. Sometimes you have to buy 12 cans at a time from Mr. Snuff, though usually the 3-can option comes back after a while. I’d look for single cans of Checkerberry in deep south places like Alabama. As for Maccoboy, I’ve never heard of anyone finding it in a local store, though I’m sure it happens (they just don’t belong to snuffhouse). @HR_pufnsnuff: the scotches are quite different from Best Dark–they have a smoky, BBQ flavour that you may or may not like. Also, they’re very finely ground so they hit the throat easily. I didn’t like them at first, but they grew on me. The closest thing I’ve had to them in British snuffs is WoS #22, which is also pretty smoky.
I like WE Garrett Scotch. It has a unique flavor and is full-strength. I like to mix a bit with weaker snuffs for extra kick.

Thanks for the info Mike, I’m most of the way through my tin of #22, I liked it from the start but it took a while to get the amount of pinch right. Just got some Kendal Irish D too, and that’s very fine but I’m getting used to that - most of it is staying in my nose now rather than a fine cloud wafting down my throat, so it all sounds quite promising!
I started with W.E. Garrett Sweet… I never did figure out where the “sweet” comes in!
I have 9 cans left! WE Garrett Sweet Personal Message me if interested EDIT: 7 cans left FEB 10th
I’ve found Superior to be the easiest to take, although my experience is limited. Others (Square, Rooster, WE Garret) are nice, but a bit smokey for my taste.
I started this snuff sanity with Red Seal. Good, although it left an odd scent after a long day of use. I found using a straw kept it out of my throat and sinus. Since, i have grown fond of more coarse and moist snuff. The smokie scotches do not appeal to me, i cant stand the campfire aroma which lingers.

Beginner here. I have only been able to find a few cans of the WE Garrett Scotch or Sweet here in the Midwest. No one knows what snuff is. A few cigarette shops just hung up on me when I called to inquire… I found that a tiny coating of the fingertip or spoon kind of just rubbed to the inside of the nostril works for me. Right up front. Probably not too classy looking. Then I inhale very softly. Still keeping the snuff right up front. Read that here somewhere I think. This produces a mellow maple syrup/honey flavor that lasts 10-15 minutes. Any other way for me just burns. No flavors at all. And I cough. I like the Scotch too. Leather then smoky for me. Very similar to a favored pipe tobacco.
